Isn't talking about "integrating technology" in one's instructional process therefore, like having a discussion about integrating the use of pens and pencils in the classroom? Or integrating the use of telephones into one's daily life? Ideally, integrating computer-based resources into the teaching and learning process would be as natural and veritably intuitive as picking up a phone to call your best friend. But computer-based technology resources are still fairly new to many. In their youth, other technologies that we now take for grantedelectricity and telephones for instancewent through this same explicitly focused "integrative process". For faculty, the downside of this process is both the time commitment it often requires, and knowing where and how even to begin. Identifying, locating, evaluating, determining ways to use these resources, and then actually creating the lesson plans that integrate them, can consume dozens of hours. The focus of this module, therefore, is to identify techniques and resources to assist faculty in reducing the time commitment it takes to begin to effectively integrate computer-based resources.

Extractions: April 4, 2000 Mr. LEVIN. Mr. President, I am pleased to join Senator Conrad and Senator Reid in introducing the Information Technology Act. The dual goal of this legislation is to ensure that every teacher in America has the ability to integrate technology into the classroom and the curriculum; and to train our citizens to meet the demand for the thousands of jobs that will need to be filled in the next decade. Mr. President, our legislation establishes two initiatives that are aimed at achieving these goals. First, it authorizes $100 million for the creation of a Teacher Tech Bonus in the amount of $5,000. The bonuses will be awarded to teachers who successfully train and receive certification in the use of technology in the classroom and in the curriculum, or teachers who become certified to teach courses in computer technology. Bonuses would be provided by the U.S. Department of Education through grants to Local Education Agencies (LEA). As a condition for receipt of bonuses, teachers are required to enter into agreements with their LEA to continue to teach within that LEA for periods of not less than three years, and such other requirements as established by the Secretary. This provision of the Information Technology Act is essential, if we are going to realize the full potential of our investment in new technology in the classroom. So few of our school districts have been able to offer state-of-the-art training, or any training at all for that matter, to their teaching staff. Students today are in the midst of a technology explosion that has opened up limitless possibilities in the classroom. In order for them to tap into this potential and be prepared for the jobs of the 21st century, they must learn how to use new technologies. But all too often, teachers are expected to incorporate technology into their instruction without being given the training to do so. It is not enough for teachers to be able to email or use computers to keep attendance or grade their students, they must use this education technology to advance their curriculum.

Extractions: Integrating Technology Into the Writing Process "What have I gotten myself into!" I was scared when I first walked into my new classroom in our brand new state of the art high school . I knew I was going to be teaching writing and speech classes in a computer lab. I supported the decision of having two computer labs available solely for the English department. I was excited to be the teacher who was assigned one of these labs as a classroom. All of these were rationale decisions I had made, but when I saw the lab for the first time I felt like I couldnt breathe. What did I know about computers? Nothing more (more likely a great deal less) than the sophomore students I was teaching. I felt like I was in over my head. Fortunately, with only minor incidents of student misbehavior (the occasional solitaire game, a bout of instant messengering or high tech note passing, and an intermittent lapse of better judgment when viewing web sites) I made it into my second semester of teaching in a computer lab. I thought to myself, "This isnt so bad," and began to relax. One day into my new relaxed state of being, as part of a school improvement plan to collect data on students writing skills, I administered a writing prompt of my own choosing. I looked at it as an opportunity to gather some data about how the students perceive their use of computers in my classes.

Intel Teach to the Future is a worldwide program to help teachers integrate technology into instruction and enhance student learning. To date, 500,000 teachers in 25 countries have completed training through this program. Pre-service educators and in-service teachers participating in the Intel Teach to the Future program learn from other teachers how to effectively incorporate technology tools and resources into their lesson plans.
