    Extractions: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has served as the Nation's principal collector, repository, and interpreter of earth science data for more than a century. The USGS has been assessing, mapping, and reporting on Iowa's earth resources since the early 1900's. Ongoing USGS programs include activities in water availability and quality, natural hazards, biological, geographic and cartographic information, contaminated environments, land and water use, and mineral resources. Examples of these programs, many of which are conducted in partnership with State and local agencies, follow. Ground water is the primary source of drinking water for Iowa's population. Information is needed by State and local governments to understand trends in water levels and water quality in the principal aquifers and to develop policy and management decisions related to their use. Although minor changes were made over the years to enabling laws that authorize communities to plan and zone, including a new subdivision statute that became effective in July 1990, none of these reforms affected the comprehensive planning requirements or provided updated methods to manage and/or promote urban growth and development. The most recent study proposal, aimed at preserving agricultural land in the state, was put before the General Assembly last year. The measure recommended that a comprehensive study be done by the Iowa State University on land-use policies within the state and nationwide. The bill called for the university to review policies discouraging agricultural land conversion, the feasibility and potential uses of the county land inventories, annexation laws, zoning laws and requirements related to comprehensive plans, smart growth policies in other states, and state and local tax assessments and incentives that encourage development.

Start with your own history and work backwards. For example, record the names of your spouse, children, or grandchildren, and any members of their families. This is more efficient than picking someone who shares your last name and working forward. One way to begin your research is by looking up an ancestor's obituary.
