This course is designed to enhance that understanding through an examination of the cultures (including religions, arts, languages, family structures and more), political economies, histories, resources, and conflicts in what is always a fascinating and often troubled part of the world. The course will take an expansive look at the Middle East from Morocco in the west, across North Africa, the Levant and the Arabian Peninsula, through Iraq and Iran to Afghanistan, and, of course, Pakistan. Among other issues, the course will deal with the origin and diffusion of Islam, Judaism and the Diaspora and Return, the politics and economics of water and oil, the impact of modernity, U.S. policy in the area, and a series of studies of regions within the Middle East. It is bounded by the Mississippi R., across which lie Wisconsin and Illinois (E); Missouri (S); Nebraska and South Dakota, from which it is separated by the Missouri and the Big Sioux rivers, respectively (W); and Minnesota (N). Typical of Iowa is the prairie. Covered a little more than a century ago with grass higher than the wheels of the pioneers' prairie schooners, or covered wagons, the prairies are now covered with fields of corn and other grains. The wild flowers that once blossomed among the prairie grass still brighten the roadsides; however, few areas of the original grassland remain, and prairie grass preserves have been established. The former habitat of wild turkeys, prairie chickens, and quail, Iowa abounds with migratory geese and ducks and the imported ring-necked pheasant and European partridge, all of which are hunted in the autumn. Des Moines is the capital and largest city. Other major cities are Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Sioux City. Near Marquette is Effigy Mounds National Monument, site of Native American mounds built by the area's earliest inhabitants. Many state parks and forests provide recreational facilities.

Ferentz's work in orchestrating the Hawkeyes’ climb to the top of the Big Ten Conference and a date with Southern California in the 2003 FedEx Orange Bowl has gone a long way in also teaching geography to many talented high school football stars across the country. Ferentz, himself, though, has thrown an occasional curve when he talks about the present day Florida being the equivalent of New Jersey to the Hawkeye football program of the 1980s.
