For a very long time, with no newspapers, radio or TV, news and events were put to music and relayed by the Bards that travelled the land. A Bard was always welcome, as his music and poetry was entertaining as well as bringing news of what was happening throughout the country side. Stories of these people as well as much about the early centuries of Ireland's past have been passed down through time in the form of various annals, the 'Annals of the Four Masters' among the more prominent of these pseudo-historical accounts of ancient Hibernia (Eire, Ireland). Serious scholars have always held that Ireland's history is not truly knowable before about 500 AD. The original waves of Celtic language immigration have been variously placed in a large window from 2000 to 300 BC, with many citing the time around 500BC. The author T.F. If you took all the Irish writers off the university reading lists for English Literature the degree course could probably be shortened by a year. Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, W B Yeats, Samuel Beckett and James Joyce are just some of the more famous names. Joyce is regarded as the most significant writer of literature in the 20th century, and the topographical realism of Ulysses still draws a steady stream of admirers to Dublin, bent on retracing the events of Bloomsday. It's possible to add at least a couple of dozen more contemporary names to this heady brew, though it might be argued that the more spectacular highlights are JP Donleavy's The Ginger Man ; Brendan Behan's Borstal Boy , Roddy Doyle's 1993 Booker Prize winner Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha , Patrick Macabe's brilliantly disturbing The Butcher Boy and anything with the word 'peat' in it written by the poet Seamus Heaney.

Stories and plays were written about figures in Ireland's past such as CuChulainn, and the Ulster cycle.

The 53rd International Summer School explores Irish society and its diverse heritage through the lenses of modern scholarship, 20th century literature and contemporary political debate. The Sumnmer School Our 2-week programme will examine Irish culture and tradition through a wide spectrum of topics, covering Art, Archaeology, Folklore, Literature, Theatre, Music, History and Politics. The course will provide new insights for students already familiar with Ireland, but is equally accessible to the newcomer. Lectures and seminars will be complemented by visits, field tours and musical events. Lectures will be given by Faculty members of international renown and by distinguished guest speakers from the Arts and public life in Ireland. It is intended to hold a panel discussion on Northern Ireland, with representatives from diverse shades of political opinion. Participants come from a wide range of backgrounds and countries, from 18 to 80. About half of them have English as their first language (you need a good knowledge of English to follow lectures and get the most from the excellent social life).
