Extractions: INDUSTRIAL VAUCLUSE Industrial activity in Vaucluse, long linked to water, to the natural mineral resources, and to agriculture, included traditional activities of textiles, paper making and milling. Industry expanded during the 19th century with the addition of pasteboard article production, metallurgy, refractory products, faience ware, ochre, candied fruits, and the maddre dye industry. The thriving economic activity of the 1800s continued into the 20th century, with new businesses related to both agriculture and the underground mineral wealth in Vaucluse, and with the appareance of a new generation of technology which was midely used by Vaucluse businesses in the mechanics, electronics and parachemistry field. Through its civil and religious monuments since time immemorial, its scenery and festivals, Vaucluse already enjoys international fame. We must now add our local indutrial culture, the savoir-faire which is revealed in our buildings, tools and products. Such is the goal of this brochure. Mineral supply in Vaucluse is rich and varied and has been utilised for many centuries : ochre, clays, building stone, sand, gypsum, limestone, coal. While he is listed as a follower of Arthur, one story (#92) tells how he was to meet Arthur in a single combat. He craftily told his three pet griffins to go ahead and kill the first man who came to the field, expecting it to be Arthur. However, Drudwas's sister was Arthur's mistress and she delayed her lover. Drudwas himself arrived first and the griffins, not recognizing him, killed him. See: TWENTY-FOUR KNIGHTS. (doov) (means Black) She was a druidess who, on discovering that her husband had another wife, drowned her rival. Her husband then cast at her with his sling and she fell into a pool which was called Dubhlinn or Dublin. The Romans called it Nigratherma - literally Black Pool, but perhaps a more ancient name for Dublin is Baile Atha Cliath or the Town of the Ford of Hurdles. Michael Scott in his IRISH FOLK AND FAIRY TALES, 'The Dawn', claims that it was the 'savage northern Vikings who discovered the small, almost circular valley surrounded by the mountains on the east coast of the fresh green land they sought to conquer, and there they would build the city they would call Dubh Linn.' She was the wife of Mongan, born on the same night as he. She was loved by Brandubh, to whom Mongan was tricked into giving her up. However, with the help of Cuimhne, the hag, she was regained.

He is investigating Wilms' tumour, which is the most common form of cancer of the kidney in children under the age of 15. One in 10,000 children develop such a tumour. Although the majority of children may be cured through chemotherapy, those who do not respond have a less promising outlook, and the recurrence of tumours in two or three years in both groups is a significant problem. Dr Schofield's work will aim to develop a diagnostic marker, which will indicate which children will respond less well and the likelihood of the recurrence of the tumour. From 1 April 1994, the Research Councils will operate under new arrangements under the direction of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, who is advised by the Director-General of the Research Councils, Professor Sir John Cadogan. Each Research Council is established by Royal Charter and has a specific mission statement agreed with the Government. There will be a total of six research Councils: Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Economic and Social Engineering and Physical Sciences Medical Natural Environment Particle Physics and Astronomy
