Extractions: Guide Picks - Top French Grammar Books There are hundreds, maybe thousands of French grammar books available, each claiming to be the "best," the "most concise," the "most complete," etc. Obviously they can't all be the best, and in fact one of them must, by definition, be the worst. How do you know which is which? Well, that's where I come in - I have more than a dozen French grammar books, many of which I use regularly, and others which I might as well throw away. Here are my favorite grammar books: the ones that I use every day as well as those I've grown beyond, but keep because they once helped me so much. (The parentheses indicate the working language(s) of each book.) Le Bon Usage Originally published in 1936, this is the bible of French grammar - the most thorough French grammar book that exists. It has been republished more than a dozen times and is a must for fluent speakers. This is the book that native speakers refer to when they want to understand or explain some aspect of French grammar. (French)
Extractions: Why do the letters have names? Answering the question of which letters are in the Spanish alphabet isn't as straightforward as it may seem. Look in a dozen reference works and you very likely will get three or four different versions of the composition of the Spanish alphabet. Some list K and W in the alphabet; others say that those letters are only in foreign derived words (such as kilowatt ).. And others differ on the combinations such as ch and ll that would be interpreted as two letters in most languages. A recent letter led me to find the "official" answer to the question. Following is that letter and another one I've received recently about the alphabet, along with the responses.
Extractions: What Do Italian Charm Bracelets Have To Do With Dolls? Why Dolls and Charms are a Fantastic Mix I run a small doll and bear shop in California. My customers are fiercely protective of my storethey are constantly asking if the store is "doing OK" because they are so afraid I will go out of business, leaving them in an area with a severe doll drought. Because of this, my decision to carry Italian Charm Bracelets in the shop was very controversial. A typical reaction: "Why are you carrying jewelry now?," never mind that my store already carries many non-doll things such as classic children's toys, Santas, and Christmas items. For some reason, the bracelets have been seen as a threat to the "dolliness" of my shop. But...the charms are actually a wonderful complement to the dolls and bears. In a second, I'll tell you WHY I'm carrying the charm bracelets, and what they are doing for the hobby of doll collection. But, first...a digression. I understand that in many parts of the United States and the world, no one has any idea of what I am talking about when I say "Italian Charm Bracelet." However, those of you in California definitely know what I'm talking about, since in California, Italian Charm Bracelets are a hot trend. And I mean HOT. In fact, just last week I was sitting in a church pew, and right in front of me were exactly 6 women, ALL wearing the bracelets. I am wearing one as I type this right now, and I've already sold 7 charms this morning.

Extractions: Advertisement It's difficult to imagine summer without mixed boiled vegetables served cold. It's equally difficult to give a recipe, because there really isn't one: its composition depends upon what looks good in the produce section of the supermarket, or what the greengrocer has. In any case, if you make it in bulk, say a heaping salad bowl's worth, and keep it in the refrigerator, you'll have a refreshing side dish for several meals. You'll want: Boil, or better yet, steam all the vegetables. Since they cook at different rates you will want to do them in separate pots; the potatoes, beets and carrots in one pot, the zucchini in another, and the string beans in a third.

Extractions: Advertisement Reading an Italian label is usually straight forward: there's the winery name, perhaps the vineyard that the grapes came from, the year, and an abbreviation (DOC, DOCG) or a phrase (Vino Da Tavola). Have you ever wondered what a DOC wine is, and how it differs from a Vino da Tavola? There are four major categories of Italian wines:
