Product Description
Worker Displacement in the US/Mexico Border Region provides a comprehensive analysis of the social and economic impact of worker displacement in border communities. The contributors - experts from a variety of fields - evaluate the consequences of displacement on individuals, families and communities from various interdisciplinary perspectives. Issues that arise as a result of job displacement, such as health, training and education, are explored in-depth.

The US/Mexico border region is one of the poorest areas of the United States. As such, it is of great interest to those looking for approaches that can be adopted to help this and similar populations reduce their poverty. The book provides a rich picture of the policy challenges involved in addressing the needs of border communities. Also examined is the role of, and effects on, the US economy.

This volume will be of particular interest to students, researchers and policymakers concerned with gaining a better understanding of the health, training and education needs of the US/Mexico border population. Immigration Legislation and Issues in the 107th Congress

Congressional Research Service Report for Congress

...Top immigration issues before the 107th
Congress include the reorganization of the
Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS),
a part of the Department of Justice (DOJ);
admissions policy; and the eligibility of noncitizens
for public assistance. Also pending
are measures to enable unauthorized aliens to
become legal permanent residents (LPRs) and
to reform temporary guest worker programs.
On July 26, 2002, the House passed a bill
to create a new homeland security department
(H.R. 5005). Under the bill, INS’s enforcement
functions would be transferred to the
new department, while INS’s service functions
would remain in DOJ in a new bureau.
On July 25, the Senate Governmental Affairs
Committee agreed to the Lieberman amendment,
as a substitute to S. 2452, which would
transfer all of INS to a new homeland security
department under a directorate of immigration
affairs. The Administration has proposed
transferring all of INS to a new homeland
security department, but placing it under a
border and transportation security division...

Congressional Research Service Report for Congress

The attacks of September 11, 2001, have increased interest in the authority
under statute to detain noncitizens (aliens) in the United States. Under the law there
is broad authority to detain aliens while awaiting a determination of whether the
noncitizen should be removed from the United States. The law also mandates that
certain categories of aliens are subject to mandatory detention (i.e., the aliens must
be detained). Aliens subject to mandatory detention include those arriving without
documentation or with fraudulent documentation, those who are inadmissable or
deportable on criminal grounds, those who are inadmissable or deportable on national
security grounds, those certified as terrorist suspects, and those who have final orders
of deportation. Aliens not subject to mandatory detention may be detained, paroled,
or released on bond. The priorities for detention of these aliens are specified in
statute and regulations. As of March, for FY2004, on an average day, 22,812
noncitizens were in Department of Homeland Security (DHS) detention.

6. The 50% American: Immigration And National Identity in an Age of Terror

Product Description
The United States is the only nation in the world that allows its citizens to hold one or more foreign citizenships, vote in another nation's elections, run for or be appointed to office in another country, and join the armed forces even of a nation with interests hostile to those of the United States while retaining their citizenship. These policies reinforce the often already strong emotional, political, and economic ties today's immigrants retain to their home countries. Yet few studies have addressed what dual citizenship means for the United States as a nation and the integration of immigrants into the American national community. Is it possible to reconcile two different nationalities, cultures, and psychologies? How can we honor immigrants' sense of identity without threatening American national identity? What do Americans have a right to expect of immigrants and what do immigrants have a right to expect of Americans? In The 50 per cent American political psychologist Stanley Renshon offers unique insight into the political and national ramifications of personal loyalties.Arguing that the glue that binds this country together is a psychological force - patriotism - he explains why powerful emotional attachments are critical to American civic process and how they make possible united action in times of crisis. In an age of terror, the idea that we are all Americans regardless of our differences is more than a credo; it is essential to our national security. Comprehensive in scope, this book examines recent immigration trends, tracing the assimilation process that immigrants to the United States undergo and describing how federal, state, and local governments have dealt with volatile issues such as language requirements, voting rights, and schooling. Renshon turns a critical eye to the challenges posed over the past four decades by multiculturalism, cultural conflict, and global citizenship and puts forth a comprehensive proposal for reforming dual citizenship and helping immigrants and citizens alike become more integrated into the American national community. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful advice from real-world immigration law practice
The thing that distinguishes this book from other treatments of immigration law is that it's written by a practicing attorney who brings up-to-date guidance on the practice of achieving legal immigration into the United States. It's a useful resource for not only people seeking status in the U.S., but also people who want to provide counsel for that purpose.Importantly, this is not from a mainstream publisher that is beholden to traditional assumptions or political correctness. Here, you get the hard facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Easy to Read
I didn't know much about legal immigration before reading this book, and I'm interested in immigration from a policy perspective. So I thought I should learn about it.This book was interesting, and I really liked the many examples.I have a lot of friends who are immigrants in various states of status, and I now know a lot about how they got here. I'd definitely recommend this book.

Since immigration is a hot topic right now, i wanted to read up on it.There are a lot of books out there about immigration.I found this book to be a quick, easy-read that gave me a lot of insight into the immigration system. Many people focus on aliens or "illegal immigrants".This book opened my eyes to another group- people who work the system to figure out a way to legally get into the US.There are a lot of ways for foreigners to get into our great country legally if they know how to do it.I recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about the immigration system. ... Product Description
Before the next century is out, Americans of African, Asian, and Latin American ancestry will outnumber those of European origin. In the Elmhurst-Corona neighborhood of Queens, New York City, the transition occurred during the 1970s, and the area's two-decade experience of multiracial diversity offers us an early look at the future of urban America. The result of more than a dozen years' work, this remarkable book immerses us in Elmhurst-Corona's social and political life from the 1960s through the 1990s.

First settled in 1652, Elmhurst-Corona by 1960 housed a mix of Germans, Irish, Italians, and other "white ethnics." In 1990 this population made up less than a fifth of its residents; Latin American and Asian immigrants and African Americans comprised the majority. The Future of Us All focuses on the combined impact of racial change, immigrant settlement, governmental decentralization, and assaults on local quality of life which stemmed from the city's 1975 fiscal crisis and the policies of its last three mayors. The book examines the ways in which residents--in everyday interactions, block and tenant associations, houses of worship, small business coalitions, civic rituals, incidents of ethnic and racial hostility, and political struggles against overdevelopment, for more schools, and for youth programs--have forged and tested alliances across lines of race, ethnicity, and language.

From the telling local details of daily life to the larger economic and regional frameworks, this account of a neighborhood's transformation illuminates the issues that American communities will be grappling with in the coming decades. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible book
A great overview of an ethnography of a neighborhood within Queens. This is a great book to help Anthropologists and students understand how techniques can be applied to modern day societies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Making of an Urban Neighborhood
I had the pleasure of taking several classes taught by the author over 15 years ago when I was a college student. This book reminds me why he was such a special teacher. He goes inside the neighborhood (literally and figuratively) to seek the common ground which unites the many people ofdiverse backgrounds in the pursuit of the American Dream.

I grew up inQueens in the 1960's and my wife grew up in Corona. We enjoyed theopportunity to recall the neighborhood as it was and to consider how andwhy it changed. This was a great book.It should be read by students ofurban sociology everywhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy perspective on urban politics
Sanjek's book provides a wealth of information for anyone concerned (some would say mad) enough to understand how urban politics take their shape from individual events, groups and people.

Although the sociologylanguage has its discontents (events like the Colombian Independence Dayfestival become "rituals"), the perspective it brings speaksvolumes of the impact of ethnicity.Sanjek shows how individuals overcamehistoric racial antipathy to recognize different people as, well, people. I certainly hope the future of us all does mean that we stop identifyingourselves as black, white or other and start recognizing ourselves as partof a local and very real community. ... Read more

Product Description
Congressional Research Service Report for Congress

.......The 108th Congress has considered and is considering legislation on a wide
range of immigration issues. Two of these issues — the transfer of immigration
authorities and expedited naturalization through military service — relate directly to
post-September 11, 2001 U.S. efforts to improve national security. In the aftermath
of the terrorist attacks, the 107th Congress established a new Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) as part of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 (P.L. 107-
296). DHS was tasked with preventing terrorist attacks in the United States and
reducing the nation’s vulnerability to terrorism, among other responsibilities.
Effective March 1, 2003, P.L. 107-296 abolished the Immigration and Naturalization
Service (INS) of the Department of Justice (DOJ), the agency which had
administered and enforced the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA),1 and
transferred most immigration-related functions to the newly created DHS. Lingering
questions remain, however, about the division of authorities between DOJ and DHS
in some areas. Pending legislation would amend the INA to explicitly transfer certain
authorities to DHS. Like the establishment of DHS, Operation Iraqi Freedom had a
goal of protecting U.S. national security. This operation prompted congressional
interest in legislation to expand the citizenship benefits of aliens serving in the
military. The 108th Congress has enacted a measure (P.L. 108-136) that amends
military naturalization and posthumous citizenship statutes and provides immigration
benefits for immediate relatives of U.S. citizen servicemembers who die as a result
of actual combat service.....

Half of all illegal immigrants came into this country legally--and we have no way of knowing they're still here!

Congressmen are putting their wives on their campaign payrolls--so that campaign contributions are really personal bribes!

The ACLU won't allow its own directors free speech.

Liberals want to strip us of the tools to stop terrorism.

The UN is a cover for massive corruption--and eighty countries, who pay 12 percent of the budget, are blocking reform.

Drug companies pay off doctors to write scripts--whether we need them or not.

Teachers unions block the firing of bad teachers--and battle against higher education standards!

Katrina victims are being stiffed by their insurance companies!

Special interests cost our consumers $45 billion--through trade quotas that save only a handful of jobs!

3-0 out of 5 stars Dry book
Great informational book but the writing is dry. Hard to keep reading without having to put it down to come back for another try.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother reading
I'm glad I only paid $5 for this book and even that was probably too much. This book was not only boring but uninformative.Statistics are presented and the author wants to make a whole argument based on a few set of facts. The author tries to highlight the fact that not only facts are presented but also suggestions on how to deal with the problems are made. The suggestions are utterly worthless and unrealistic.I think this guy believes the United States functions in a vacuum.

Don't bother wasting your time on this book.I think a twelve year-old could have provided better alternatives in dealing with the situations presented in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the feint of heart or politically correct
Synopsis

We live in a time in American history when our moral values, our convictions, and the safety of our nation is threatened by the law of the politically correct. Everything you see on the news, read in the newspaper and hear on the radio has been filtered in some form or fashion by the "PC" sieve. That is what makes a book like Outrage stand out like a pink elephant at a cocktail party.

Critics have labeled the book a "rant," and for the most part, it is - at least that's the way you would feel if you hold the PC ideology near and dear. The subject of the book is U.S. politics and in it Morris presents a long list of topics sure to touch a nerve and stir a sense of, well, outrage.

The list includes:

*Immigration - the borders are not the primary problem, it is an accountability issue
*The United Nations - a worldwide scandal ignored
*The ACLU - American hypocrisy personified
*The U.S. Congress - we pay, they play
*The Patriot Act - PC vs. Common Sense
*Teachers Unions - Bad teachers getting paid to stay home vs. merit pay for performance
*Pharmaceutical Companies - profits over public health
*Fannie Mae - the Democratic Enron
*The bankruptcy bill - not what it used to be
*Government student loans - robbery without limits
*Insurance scams - the media left town when the floods receded - A little help here?!?
*Tobacco Companies - 21st century shell game
*Crooked politicians - American friends or foes?
*Trade Protection and Special Interests - the public is not smart enough to notice . . .
Morris names the crooks, both Democrat and Republican, and lets the heads fall where they may.

My Two Cents Worth

Dick Morris is not the kind of guy you want living next door. He has a VERY large list of VERY powerful people who would probably prefer that he would quietly just go away.

As a former advisor to Bill Clinton for 20 years, Dick made a living of irritating conservatives. After a public shunning from the Clinton administration, he has turned his attention to irritating the other half of the political nation, the liberals, with equal success. He has remarkable audacity, leading one to believe he must also have a remarkable security detail following him 24/7.

Dick doesn't simply expose the corruption, he names names. Lots of names. Regardless of your political persuasion, he makes you mad. He makes you want to look up the phone number or email address or your congressman or senator and do a little venting of your own.

The thing that keeps this book from being just another political "rant" is the way Morris offers plausible and common sense solutions to each of the atrocities he mentions. Whether his proposed solutions would actually work is subject to debate, but at face value they make sense. That is more than you can say for the convoluted and frustrating solutions we have recently witnessed in the congressional "bailout" legislation.

I am not a big fan of Mr. Morris when he spars with Bill O'Reilly of FOX News fame, but you have to admire his perspective. After all, I have yet to hear any of the people named in this book mount a serious rebuttal to his claims.

I liked the book and I found it refreshing to read copy that isn't at all concerned about being politically correct. Call a liar a liar and a crook a crook - if you are wrong, you will most certainly be contacted by an attorney. I particularly liked the Notes section that corresponds with the chapters of the book as a sort of bibliography. It's almost 50 pages in length and adds to the credibility of the copy.

I can't wait to share this with some selected friends.

Hardback, 303 pages, 2 1/2 hours

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Informative and Interesting Book
Dick Morris may have worked for Bill Clinton but his books BASH both Democrats and Republicans for porking out and having so many scams and underhanded trickery to partake in taxpayers' money. His chapter on immigration and unions have come true. They are getting "paid back" now by the Democrats for pouring the money into the party at the expense of American national interests. I enjoyed this book and seeing Dick Morris on television and I signed up for his emails which are extremely informative.Dick Morris is a true American for telling the truth on the corruption in Washington.

I am currently reading Fleeced and it is as mind blowing as Outrage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outrage
Dick Morris and his wife by the way are among my favorite authors. I am going to make it a priority to do the steps he suggests to help stop the ripping off of Americans. I hope others read it and do the same. It's like we just can't stop our government from spending our money unless we vote them out and it seems as though party politics is more important than stopping them from stealing our money. I guess it'll take 50,60 or 70 percent tax to finally make them figure it out. The rich and if I were among them, me too, are going to find a way of living some where else yet still have life, liberty, ownership and the pursuit of happiness as benefits. Maybe buying their own island and establishing a New America. Sounds like a new book. Someone should investigate and write. Is it possible? If so maybe I would move there and help defend it.... ... Product Description

Claims that immigrants take Americans’ jobs, are a drain on the American economy, contribute to poverty and inequality, destroy the social fabric, challenge American identity, and contribute to a host of social ills by their very existence are openly discussed and debated at all levels of society. Chomsky dismantles twenty of the most common assumptions and beliefs underlying statements like “I’m not against immigration, only illegal immigration” and challenges the misinformation in clear, straightforward prose.

In exposing the myths that underlie today’s debate, Chomsky illustrates how the parameters and presumptions of the debate distort how we think—and have been thinking—about immigration. She observes that race, ethnicity, and gender were historically used as reasons to exclude portions of the population from access to rights. Today, Chomsky argues, the dividing line is citizenship. Although resentment against immigrants and attempts to further marginalize them are still apparent today, the notion that non-citizens, too, are created equal is virtually absent from the public sphere. Engaging and fresh, this book will challenge common assumptions about immigrants, immigration, and U.S. history.

“Chomsky’s book is an indispensable guide to the current debate on immigration. If you are at all uncertain about how to deal with anti-immigrant arguments, you will find Chomsky’s book a perfect response to those arguments. She makes her points with crystal-clear clarity, and unassailable evidence, while offering constructive solutions, both short-term and long-term.” —Howard Zinn, author of You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train

“Immigrants take away jobs from “Americans.”Immigrants drive down wages.Immigrants don’t pay taxes and yet benefit from public services. You’ve heard it all before, probably from CNN’s Lou Dobbs. But as Avi Chomsky demonstrates, these are all myths, if not outright lies. She not only demolishes virtually every myth about immigrants and immigration to the U.S., she offers policy makers and activists solutions for tackling many of the issues created by globalization and an immigration policy grounded in falsehoods, and in so doing destroys the greatest myth of all: that nothing can be done.” —Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination

"Finally, a concise and comprehensive breakdown of the most prevalent misconceptions about immigration. Avi Chomsky provides not only practical ammunition for the pundit wars, but also real thinking about the intersection of migration with the history of race and rights in the U.S. It's the definitive field guide to today’s immigration debate." —Tram Nguyen, executive editor of Colorlines magazine and author of We Are All Suspects Now

“Avi Chomsky’s new book, “They Take Our Jobs!” is a welcome addition to the literature and tools needed to inform the current debate on immigration. In identifying more than 20 “myths” about immigration, the author brings readers through an accessible discussion that includes history, politics, economics and social analysis to challenge these myths and more.At a time when we desperately need to shift the public discourse in the U.S. and elsewhere, to include a more humane and informed perspective on the process of immigration and the lives of migrants and their families, Chomsky’s book provides us all with a much-needed sense of history and justice—and injustice—that must be included as we struggle for fair and humane immigration policies.” —Catherine Tactaquin, Executive Director, National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

“If ever there was a need for a pithy primer on immigration, it’s now, and scholar-activist Aviva Chomsky has provided just that. She considers myths from the book’s title, “immigrants don’t pay taxes” and then gracefully and in plain language delivers arguments with lessons on history, law and racism. In other words, this is the book to give your xenophobicc mother-in-law at the next family barbecue.” —Daisy Hernandez, ColorLines Review

“Aviva Chomsky’s “They Take Our Jobs!” should be mandatory reading in high schools. Cleanly organized into 21 chapters—one for each myth, as well as an extra one in there at the end—the volume serves as a quick, crystal-clear introduction to immigration issues . . . If every American—not just high schoolers, but our elected officials—read this concise, well-documented primer, we just might find ourselves overhauling our system.” —FeministReview (blogspot)

“Chomsky reminds us that in the 19th century white workers in the South "clung to their status of legal and racial superiority, but the entrenched racial inequalities undermined the status of poor whites as well." Black job seekers per se did not hurt poor whites, but rather their disenfranchisement combined with racism prevented their organization into unions and political movements. Employers enjoyed aa pool of poor and easily exploitable workersssss with which to break strikes and undermine all working-class wages.” —Bangor Daily News

Aviva Chomsky is professor of history and coordinator of Latin American Studies at Salem State College. The author of several books, Chomsky has been active in Latin American solidarity and immigrants’ rights issues for over twenty-five years. She lives in Salem, Massachusetts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Well written nonsense
There may well be myths regarding immigration, but Prof. Chomsky does a poor job identifying and addressing these myths. The book essentially argues that we should have no policies that limit immigration.
The first and deep rooted problem with Chomsky's analysis is that she redefines the problem from illegal immigrants to all immigrants. This allows her to confound issues and arguments and ignore the actual context to the current immigration issues. As the data she references (page 160) shows, Americans today have a generally positive attitude towards immigrants - but they are clearly negative about illegal immigrants. This confounding of issues undermines much of her analysis.
The second problem is that Prof Chomsky frames the entire issue as if her 21 myths exist only in the United States. There is little detailed comparative analysis.Does she really think Canada and Mexico have open borders? This lack of a detailed comparative analysis leads to the third problem - Prof Chomsky has real difficulties with the fact that nation states exist.
The analysis of the first myth and title of the book illustrates the weaknesses of Chomsky's style of analysis.Chomsky deconstructs the words in the supposed myth - Immigrants take American Jobs. She argues that there are two fallacies.Fallacy #1 there are no American jobs because "today's economy is so globally integrated that the idea of jobs having a national identity is practically useless."This is pure sophistry and is completely irrelevant to the concerns that ordinary people have about the ongoing flood of illegal immigrants. Fallacy #2:"The notion that immigration and immigrants reduce the number of jobs available to people already in the United States" is a fallacy because the supply of jobs is elastic wrt population growth and besides jobs are part of a global economy. That is the sum total of her argument. It simply neither frames the issue nor addresses it.It is clever so long as you do not ask the simple and direct question "Would Americans take the jobs that illegal immigrants actually hold?"But this is not Myth #1: It is framed as Myth #2 - yup, it is a bit confusing. It is even more confusing because Prof Chomsky after a meandering tour through the role of "legal" immigrants in low paying jobs in the American economy re-asks the question:"Do immigrants compete with low-skilled workers for low-paying jobs?Yes."Since this is largely Myth #1 as well, I infer that she is saying that both Myth #1 and Myth #2 are not in fact myths!Prof. Chomsky gets out of this bind by arguing that illegal immigrants and low-paid non-immigrant workers all suffer from the manipulation of the labor market by businesses aided and abetted by the government.Which may or may not be true, but it does not address the accuracy of the propositions she has framed as myths.
If we look at Myth #8 - The country is being overrun by illegal immigrants, the same pattern of not addressing the issue as plainly stated continues.Chomsky somehow believes that this myth is debunked because 11 million illegal or undocumented immigrants are only 11 million with some being married and some not being married. She does not even address the impact of this huge number of immigrants on the border states of California and Arizona.
Myth #21 hardly qualifies as a myth - "The problems this book raises are so huge that there's nothing we can do about them".Chomsky's diagnosis is that we have these immigration problems because of capitalism. She makes the plainly unsupported assertion that "in a more equal world, border issues would cease to hold the importance that they do."She argues that the European Union supports this contention. It is doubtful that Romanians who are being sent back to Romania from France and the French for that matter see the world exactly the same way that Prof. Chomsky does. She then argues that since people can flow between States in the United States then "it is entirely possible for open borders to coexist with orderly administration and a state of law."In short, Prof Chomsky's solution to the problem is to define it away by hypothesizing a world without nation states thereby removing the need for immigration policies. If this sounds a little over-simplified that is because it is.In my mind, doing something about the existence of nation states and capitalism is a pretty tall order.Again this seems more like reality than a myth.
Like most Marxists, Prof. Chomsky has a difficult time dealing with reality; she finesses the real issues of illegal immigration. Her "myths" remain the consequences of the failure to enforce reasonable controls on the flow of immigrants.
If she wanted to help those driven to risk everything to get to America, then she should use her intellect and energy to create jobs in Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia.I contend that she has a better chance of creating 11 million jobs than doing away with nation states.

1-0 out of 5 stars why do people are so rude
i think that this book is rude and this are the concecuenses why young children are getting hurt. Why can't there just be peace. In the first place they are not taking your jobs in the first place they started working hard. They just come to work and have a better life. Why you guys can't understand that. They do not want to harm you at all. They are nice and working people. This situation people need to realize that kids are getting hurt and families are getting separeted. PUT YOUR SELF IN THERE SHOES. to see what life they have and how they suffer. i hope that everyone makes a change. and realize what they have done.

and if you want to jubge them, first know that they are about and why they arehere, how they get hurt, and all the problems that schools has.. and it's just because of people that are racist.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
RECEIVED ON TIME WITH THE ARRIVAL TIME GIVEN. BOOK IS AN EXCELLENT CONDITION, WE USE AGAIN, THANKS

4-0 out of 5 stars Politics Makes Strange Bedfellows
The wonderful title of this immigration book is revealing and enticing. Its argument and assumptions are also revealing and to me much less enticing.
The technique of starting with the "myths" about immigration, or any topic, and then exposing that the myths are not grounded in facts is a very good way of writing a persuasive book. The myths that Chomsky chooses to debunk are the ones that are most often heard.
* Immigrants drive down wages
* Immigrants don't pay taxes
* We are being overrun by immigrants
* The US has always welcomed immigrants
* And seventeen more.
Some of the books arguments are very convincingly constructed. She takes the idea"I am not opposed to immigration I'm opposed to illegal immigration." Shows that before 1924 there were no illegal immigrants from Europe because the laws making it illegal hadn't been written yet. She then draws a parallel to the civil right struggle and shows that immigration laws discriminate against brown people.History she concludes will honor people who don't obey discriminatory laws.
Her other methods of debunking the myths however will not convince many of the people who now oppose immigration and immigrants. She often fails to put things in historic or relative perspective. For instance she claims that late 19th century US immigration policy regarding Asians was racist but doesn't use any perspective by comparing it to other settler nations policies. But the most important thing to know about "Twenty Myths is that Chomsky sees the world through a Marxist lens. She sees the producers as exploiters, the business organizer as evil and the labor organizer as good. Her book is full of assumptions about the evil intents of business. She writes "In many industries, employers seek to reduce costs by employing the poorest most vulnerable people."The same facts could be written: "In many industries, employers seek to reduce costs by hiring new workers at low wages so that they can offer their customers the low cost goods they demand."
Chomsky writes in her conclusion that "High levels of migration are a symptom of a global system that privileges the few at the expense of the many."Would be more accurate if written. For the many high levels of migration are a solution to a global system that privileges the few.Because if migration is allowed people to vote with their feet and go to the places where they feel they can maximize their opportunities.

At the same time that I agreed with Chomsky's conclusions I was steaming mad at many of her arguments and interpretations."They take our Jobs" is a worthwhile read because it presents the arguments from the left in favor of a more humane immigration policy cogently and concisely.

1-0 out of 5 stars Drivel with poor economics
I agree with the basic premise of this book that the current anti immigration reaction is racist and is wrapped in poor economics and scapegoating.

However the author has clearly never even read basic economic theory because she is assuming that wages have dropped due to the wealthy snagging more money from the pockets of the masses which should make you wonder who would these capitalists sell to in that case? A mass of dirt poor customers?. After all you can get rich selling to the rich but you can get far richer by selling affordable products to everyone. Besides since there are more moderate to lower income people than the wealthy where do you suppose the most amount of sales would be concentrated.

Immigrants have never caused a drop in standard of living but she clearly has an ideological ax to grind and would not even look at the various empirically proven reasons as to why wages have dropped she just blindly states that it is an out in the open conspiracy of the capitalists. The real reason has to due with the banking infrastructure and a bunch of other real world reasons not a conspiracy amongst the millions of capitalists in the United States. Dialectical Materialism is a dried up out dated view of the world that simplifies reality in an immense way.

Also as far as the US always trying to remain white I wish she could tell that to the nativists who thought the Irish and especially the Italians were a different race not just a different ethnicity.

I suggest to people looking for a more moderate yet pro immigration read that they should look up "Immigrants: Why your country needs them" by Phillip Legraine. He is pro welfare state and pro multiculturalism but avoids the monolithic world view that this author was unfortunately raised in. ... Read more

Product Description

While the United States cherishes its identity as a nation of immigrants, the country's immigration policies are historically characterized by cycles of openness and xenophobia. Outbursts of anti-immigrant sentiment among political leaders and in the broader public are fueled by a debate over who is worthy of being considered for full incorporation into the nation, and who is incapable of assimilating and taking on the characteristics and responsibilities associated with being an American.

In Illegal, Alien, or Immigrant, Lina Newton carefully dissects the political debates over contemporary immigration reform. Beginning with a close look at the disputes of the 1980s and 1990s, she reveals how a shift in legislator's portrayals of illegal immigrants--from positive to overwhelmingly negative--facilitated the introduction and passing of controversial reforms. Newton's analysis reveals how rival descriptions of immigrant groups and the flattering or disparaging myths that surround them define, shape, and can ultimately determine fights over immigration policy. Her pathbreaking findings will shed new light on the current political battles, their likely outcomes, and where to go from here.

Product Description

Salvadorans and other Central Americans have a strong presence in the United States because of the recent civil wars, natural disasters, and resulting economic downturns in the region. Most fled the right-wing death squads that were funded by the Reagan and first Bush Administrations and that targeted civilian populations in the 1980s and 1990s. The war in El Salvador left more than 80,000 people dead and more than 9,000 disappeared. In The Salvadoran Americans, readers will understand the fuller context of Salvadoran and Central American immigration to the United States and how these new Americans are adjusting to and contributing to U.S. society.

The land of El Salvador and its demography, language, history, including the war and Peace Accords, culture, and religion are briefly surveyed to begin. A major section then covers the immigration laws and status of the refugees once they arrived. The reasons for emigration and waves of migrations of Central Americans since the 1870s are explained further. Recent demographics offer concrete numbers to better analyze the new populations. Other chapters cover adjustment and integration issues, emphasizing family and community influences. Employment, political, health, and youth issues, including gang participation, are discussed. The contributions to U.S. society and culture, including participation in the labor force, food, and artistic output, as well as profiles of noted Salvadorans in the United States, round out the narrative.

Product Description
Asylum Denied is the gripping story of political refugee David Ngaruri Kenney's harrowing odyssey through the world of immigration processing in the United States. Kenney, while living in his native Kenya, led a boycott to protest his government's treatment of his fellow farmers. He was subsequently arrested and taken into the forest to be executed. This book, told by Kenney and his lawyer Philip G. Schrag from Kenney's own perspective, tells of his near-murder, imprisonment, and torture in Kenya; his remarkable escape to the United States; and the obstacle course of ordeals and proceedings he faced as U.S. government agencies sought to deport him to Kenya. A story of courage, love, perseverance, and legal strategy, Asylum Denied brings to life the human costs associated with our immigration laws and suggests reforms that are desperately needed to help other victims of human rights violations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well Crafted
I was extremely sympathetic of his plight.

The seller delivered the novel very quickly!!! (which is always a plus)

4-0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good book for a law school class
I read this book for my Immigration Law class at school, and to my surprise, I really enjoyed the book. Before I read the book, I was afraid that it would be a boring book about the technicalities of an individual's application for asylum, the process, and the outcome.Although that may be one accurate summary of Asylum Denied, the book actually has more substance and story to go along with the bare asylum application process than I expected.I really liked how the book began with vivid descriptions of Jeff's ordeal in a water cell.It was disturbing and confusing because the reader does not yet know why he's there at this point, but it is the perfect opening to the book that hooks in skeptical readers like me.I forgot that I was reading a book for a law school class.Instead, I was just reading a really good book because I wanted to.

The book did not disappoint me after the initial opening scene. It continued to tell the life story of Jeff, which I found interesting and gripping, giving me a sense of who Jeff is and how he would later end up in a situation where he needed to apply for asylum in the US.Notwithstanding the title, this book is really about the whole life of Jeff, not just his application, and subsequent denial, of asylum.I was supposed to read this book with immigration law in my mind, but I could not help but be engrossed in the story and hurried through the pages describing the substantive law and the asylum process, slowing down only when the pages turned back to the story.I did however pay attention to the retelling of the oral arguments in the 4th circuit, only because I found the judges so obtuse that I was infuriated. How could they not understand that it was his state of mind before he left for Kenya that matters and not whether he was actually tortured again when he returned to Kenya that matters?

I understand that the book was written by Jeff and his lawyer, thus, it would only be natural that readers would sympathize with their story more than they would with the typical asylum applicants. However, the book did do a good job illustrating vividly what a lengthy process application for asylum is, what it entails, the emotions that the people involved can suffer, and what could be at stake for every asylum applicant. This was a really good book to see the law in a real life situation.

Although I read this book for a class, I would definitely recommend it to others as a pleasure read. Although there are parts of the book that are a little dense (the parts describing the law and asylum process), they are not hard to get through as they are integral to understanding the hardships that Jeff had to go through.Jeff's story is definitely interesting enough to keep you reading until the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Met the author
I read this book before entering law school and had the chance to meet the author at an orientation event.I found it to be incredibly well written and emotionally touching through the struggles he experienced and would recommend it to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Asylum Denied
This book is the fascinating, inspiring and enlightening true story of a young manwho was a political refugee from Kenya. He came to the US, graduated from college, and went on to law school here. He married a US citizen and they had a child. Seems like it would be a sure thing he could stay.....but not so fast! This is the story of his amazing struggle and shows how our system works. (Actually, not so well sometimes.) Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good read!
C. Bates, Eugene, Oregon

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing story
I couldn't set this book down.He literally goes through every possibility, facing years of uncertainty, and still keeps trying - and graduates college and law school in the meantime.I cannot imagine going through what he went through in Kenya, then coming to the US as a safe haven, and facing such a drawn-out, uphill battle simply to stay.

His story is not always easy to read but it is very engaging, even if, like me, you are not a lawyer or law student.David Kenney Ngaruri and his friends and colleagues in this book are very inspirational.
