4-0 out of 5 stars Solid overview of material
This book proved to be a critical supplement to my poor immigration law course. The book provides a very helpful overview of the entirety of immigration law in the U.S., and really helps clarify the complex categories and definitions that pervade the subject.Depending on how theoretical or policy-oriented your course is, you might actually learn more about the black letter law from this book than from the course, as I did.Overall, given the low price I would recommend purchasing it even if you only think it would be marginally helpful to your studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars (4th ed.) Good overview/foundation for further research
The most difficult thing about studying any body of laws resides, not in its substance, but in its presentation. One advantage of immigration law is that it relies heavily on fairly stable categories. This book should help anyone but the most impatient to build a first outline of the main categories of immigration law--with helpful annotations.

15 chapters: 1-4 (background information--including history and constitutional law); 5 (immigrant visas), 6 (nonimmigrant visas), 7 (zooms on student visas--a sub-category of nonimmigrant visas), 8 (removal--formerly "deportation"), 9 (inadmissibility), 10 (refugees/asyless), 11 (international law), 12 (citizenship), 13 (zooms on rights of aliens in general), 14 (criminal aspects of immigration law), 15 (ethical practice).

My main advice is to take good note of the general INA and CFR provisions under each category and subcategory, and names (and holdings, why not) of important cases. Add that to your outline, and you have a fine guide for further research. In other words, if your goal is to familiarize yourself with the field AS A WHOLE for the first time, don't get bogged down in the discussions of legal history and cases at first (yes, this is not a manual, so what's the point?)--except for the general history of US immigration law at the start of the book, which gives you a good first sense of the "spirit" of US immigration policy. You could come back to those discussions later, without the aggravation.

I do not recommend delving directly into any body of laws that is as extensive as immigration law, unless of course you have a few years to spare--but then again why waste that time? Think of books like this one as you would of maps: you don't want to have to start looking for California, street by street, starting in Washington DC. The point is this: an overview is always useful. This one should help you, if you use it properly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best ready reference on Immigration
This book is not only very easy to carry around but is an awesome tool for students and practitioners. Right to the point and easy reading format, a must to deal with the most complicated area of our laws. It seems that it will be a good tool for a while since there's no change to immigration laws on sight in the near future.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT NUTSHELL
I would HIGHLY encourage anyone taking Immigration law to purchase this nutshell. It succintly covered all the topics of immigration law and trendously helped in understanding this evolving field of law.

Product Description
Immigration Law for Paralegals is an indispensable and practical guide on U.S. immigration, citizenship and visa procedures for instructing and training students or anyone interested in a career as an immigration paralegal or legal assistant. The new edition has a new chapter on court litigation which also includes writs of mandamus and habeas corpus with federal courts. All forms have been updated, including the G-28. A new chapter covers representation of clients before DHS agencies, such as Request for Evidence before USCIS, deferred inspection before CBP, employer compliance (e-verify) before ICE and H1B and L1A audits. The book also expands on certain topics such as H2Bs, EB2s, and regional centers for the EB5 category. New information on the Cuban Adjustment Act is also included plus the new test and standards for the current naturalization process. Contents of Immigration Law for Paralegals include: interviewing, gathering information, case management and document preparation techniques; analysis of temporary and permanent employment visas; analysis of family-based petitions, political asylum and naturalization; as well as samples of completed applications, a glossary of terms and useful appendices. Each visa category is set forth in a clear and concise manner, with real-life and hypothetical situations at the end of each chapter, allowing students to visualize actual problems and issues that arise when processing a case. Further, in responding to the hypothetical situations, students will look to the United States immigration statutes, rules and regulations and precedent and administrative policies to resolve issues. Additionally, each section contains a completed sample application, definition of legal terms, and exercises modeled after tasks paralegals may encounter on the job, including the preparation of relative petitions (Form I-130) and the adjustment of a status package (Forms I-485, G-325A, I-131, I-765, I-864A, and G-28). In keeping with the concise format of each chapter, excerpts from Federal, AAO, and BIA decisions will be cited or footnoted where relevant. The Glossary and Appendices include Immigration Law resources; USCIS Local, Regional and Service Center addresses; questions and answers for the naturalization exam; blank USCIS forms; Credential Evaluation sample request forms and a list of agencies; sample USCIS color photograph specifications, sample medical form (I-688); and IRS Individual Tax ID Number Request (SS-4). ... Product Description

This new edition focuses on the specific changes that have been made in immigration procedures dealing with employment-based visas and work permits overseen by the Department of Homeland Security. These changes affect specific visas, available length of stays, requirements for issue of specific visas and companies that sponsor aliens in the U.S. as it relates to their business operations.

These changes are explained in a user-friendly, understandable manner. Written by an attorney who works with various kinds of immigration cases on a daily basis, this book explains procedures, documents, forms, immigrations laws and immigrant visa categories for the immigrant seeking green card status.

This new edition is divided into the main areas of who qualifies, how to file, which forms to file, when to file and what to expect. All of these areas are addressed in each of the many visa categories. Information concerning the new USCIS interview, the consular interview, immigration court and other general topics of interest are also discussed. Clear and concise explanations of the naturalization process, non-immigrant visas and how to find an attorney complete the text of the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incorrect information
On page 159 of the 3rd edition, it is mentioned that an individual is authorized to work with the receipt notice (for work authorization) and an SSN while waiting for the temporary employment authorization document. That is simply not true according to several Houston based immigration attorneys.I contacted the author of this book to get some clarifications but never got a response.

After I recieved my notice of receipt, I got additional confirmation of that because it explicitly states that it cannot be used as an authorization to get any sort of legal employment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overloading the boat concept should be national required reading.
The concept of "Overloading the Boat" should be required reading for the nation. It explains that if immigration is unchecked, too many immigrants can consume this nation's resources and sink the boat. This is a good argument for the unchecked flow of illegal immigrants crossing our border. Unchecked or uncontrolled immigration is a problem for any country.

Also, in my opinion, if too many illegal immigrants along with sanctioned legal immigrants come in too fast, the immigrants don't assimilate our culture. For example, immigrants learn English too slowly or not at all. For a nation to do well, a national language is a unifying bond. If we have to put every language on websites or phone messages, it can fracture national bonding and unity. It creates mini-states of the countries of origin and doesn't cement our national identity.

The other concept is the "Immigration Door." The author discussed the concept of how wide or how narrow the immigration door should be open. People from across the world want to come here for the freedom and opportunities that America offers. Also, America needs talent from within to progress, but also needs to look abroad to keep our competitive edge. The door opening can't be so wide that too many immigrants come in that can't be assimilated and it can't be too narrow to exclude critical talent. These factors affect the door opening.

In my opinion, we could fund legal resident students in skills areas with free grant money to offset reliance on illegal immigrant labor. For example, establish construction trades instruction at community colleges and pay the students' costs; this way, the construction industry wouldn't have to rely on illegal immigrant labor.

All in all, the book is excellent. About half of the book is full of forms and the author advises forms can go out of date and to keep current, you have to keep abreast of changes.

P.S. - Found error on Page 6. The caption on the side of the page says the legislative branch is the branch of government responsible for "enforcing" the law. It should be corrected to read that the legislative branch of the government is responsible for "creating" the law.

1-0 out of 5 stars it let me down.
good and bad. good because it was consistent. bad because it consistently let me down. the best word to describe the book is "perfunctory". when ever i tried to learn about something that i consider "basic" i often resorted to google since the book gave no mention of it!(e.g. what are the travel restrictions on green card holders? google then taught me a green card holder cannot be abroad for over six months...that's IMPORTANT! how does a u.s. resident qualify to become naturalized? NOTHING MENTIONED! who are the different government agencies/players that are involved in the immigration process and what are their role? THAT'S BASICS!).

if anyone is interested and willing to pay for shipping and handling you can have my book for free. (seriously).

WARNING: i am planning to pursue a CAREER in immigration so it's possible that my standards are just unreasonably high.

I found this book to be very informative and easy to understand considering immigration laws are difficult.I work in an immigration law firm and brought the book in and one of our top paralegals felt it was a great reference book and actually ordered one for our office.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Reader's Digest version
Immigration Made Simple, an easy to read guide to the U.S. immigration process was written to introduce the complex subject of immigration to those who needed to have a practical understanding of the rules and regulations of our system. The title is self explanatory. This book was not written to be used as a law text nor to provide comprehensive, indepth descriptions of our immigration laws. There are many other books that fill this need. Immigration Made Simple, now in its 6th edition, has been ordered and reordered by thousands of libraries, academic institutions, corporate personnel and individuals who wish to have a better understandingof the U.S. Immigration process. It has also been a #1 Quality Books bestseller.

1-0 out of 5 stars barely a good start
I purchased this book to assist me with an immigration law class that I am auditing in a law school.I am a practicing attorney, but have not done any immigration law. This book is only 180 pages long and starting on page 81 is a list of immigration attorneys that goes on for 10 pages. This list is followed by "sample" immigration forms...So, all you are really getting here is 80 pages of text on a very complicated subject. This is the Reader's Digest of immigration books...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource On The Immigration Process
U.S. Immigration Made Easy lives up to its title. Since I'm an immigration lawyer, I'm asked by some clients if they handle cases on their own.I tell not exactly "alone" - but if they use the help of Nolo's materials like this book, there are many immigration forms they can prepare on thier own.

I read a lot of books on immigration.Like the entire Nolo series, this is a great book for basic immigration concerns.Of course, many immigration procedures are complicated.Still, I think quite a few persons could guide their own cases through the immigration process with this book. The authors are careful to point out when an attorney's advice will be needed.

Even if someone is going to hire an attorney, reading this book will help a client ask better questions to make sure they're getting what they're looking for when they hire someone to help guide them through the immigration process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for any Immigrant
If you are unfortunate enough (as I was for an immigrant), then do yourself a favor and read this book. It is an extensive book, but some section are repetitive (due to similar regulations for different visa categories). It will also help you deal more effectively with an attorney in immigration matters and avoid many of the legal traps that has ensnared my new immigrants. I wish I had this during my time going through the INS system. If you are reading this for research or non-immigration purposes it will give me an appreciation for what new immigrants have to go through. Good Book .

3-0 out of 5 stars Very basic
The book is quite basic. It will be helpful to people who are starting out on the subject. I was looking for information on the Cuban Family Reunification Parole (CFRP) Program and it had nothing on the subject!

I wish there was a more comprehensive reference for non-practitioners.

4-0 out of 5 stars I think Nolo's title is misleading
This book is well-written, like all of NOLO's books. So if you want to attempt applying for legal US status, this is a good way to find out more about the process. In the end, though, I think this book only reinforces the horrible tangle of US immigration and how difficult it is to navigate those waters. It explains enough to make you want to go out and get a lawyer!!

    1. First, the title is misleading. I understand that they want to sell books, but there is nothing about US immigration that is "easy". And this book won't help you if you are already in the country without papers. Just move on.

    2. Second, NOLO excels at simpler legal matters, like how to fight a traffic ticket, or how to be a better landlord. Immigration is a much tougher beast. I'm not sure that any book can really be comprehensive enough to do the job.

    3. I think that Nolo needs to be a little more forthright about the fact that this book will not help the majority of people that are trying to obtain legal status, and even those who are here legally (like students) probably won't be helped by this book.

    4. The number of glowing anonymous reviews is suspect, although it is possible that the posters are posting their reviews anonymously because they are afraid that somehow someone will be able to trace them. I have found that immigrants tend to be a suspect bunch (my parents are a prime example!).

Now, despite all of these shortfalls, I still feel that the book deserves 4 stars. Why? Because Nolo's book is still the best one out there. I can't recommend any book that's better, which is unfortunate. So, if you are looking for a book on Immigration, buy this one. The Nolo press book on Fiancé visas is the best on the market, too, if your particular situation applies.

Outspoken, no-nonsense, and eminently fascinating, Joseph M. Arpaio captured the public's imagination from his first day as sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, in 1992.He has become an icon, not only in his own state, but all over the world. For 15 years, he has maintained an unprecedented 80% approval rating. Famous for his "get smart and get tough" approach to jails, "Sheriff Joe," as he is universally known, conceived The Tent City Jail where he houses his inmates in surplus army tents left over from the Korean War. Known as the "Alcatraz of Arizona," the jail features chain gangs and stringent discipline. By eliminating all comforts for his inmates, he has managed to shave $500,000 annually from the cost of keeping prisoners. But he also offers a wide range of educational and therapeutic courses for inmates. To his ardent followers, he is a hero for both his toughness on crime and his sense of humanity. While his opponents decry him for his iron-fisted approach, no one can deny that Sheriff Joe is one of the country's most respected elected officials. Joe's Law is an uncensored look by "America's Toughest Sheriff" at some of the most important and difficult issues facing America today. As the first law enforcement official in the country to arrest illegal immigrants, Arpaio tackles illegal immigration head on--how it intertwines with drug trafficking, taxes, and crime, and how it impacts health care and education as well. Arpaio offers innovative and fair ways to solve this dilemma and many others, not only in his own state but throughout the country.Compelling and courageous, this is a candid take on some of America's most pressing social problems, and one man's revolutionary vision for eliminating them. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing more than a RACIST
Please don't buy this book. If you do you are going to help a RACIST !!

1-0 out of 5 stars Joe Arpaio has not read his own book, why should you?
If you go to Utube and look up Joe's Law...you'll stumble upon a hearing in which he admits to not knowing the contents of the book, in addition, he states that he has not read his own book. Then he goes on to say that the views reflected on the book are not his own. However he states in the very beginning that he is the main writer of this book.I'd like to see his own review of the book before I buy it myself...he should read his own book right?

1-0 out of 5 stars Nativist, racist propaganda
Evil, evil bigot. Hatred for immigrants, stupid on drug policy and downright power hungry. He reminds me of the political bosses prevalent from the earlier part of the 20th century. Shame on you, Joe. Your uniformed fans will perish and your legacy as a racist, nativist, and corrupt "leader" will persist far after your death.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great service!
I was very pleased with the condition of the book and the speed at which I received it.
    Great job! Thanks!

1-0 out of 5 stars Since Arpaio didn't read this book, You won't want to read it either
Self-promoting politician Joe Arpaio admitted in a deposition on Dec. 16, 2009 that he hasn't read the book, Joe's Law and doesn't agree with everything in it.If you believe in the Bill of Rights, you won't agree with the book either. It's no surprise Joe Arpaio is distancing himself from the jingoistic, nativist rhetoric in the book, since he is being sued for racial profiling. He is also under grand jury investigation for abuse of power. The publisher should change the title to Joe's Law: America's Most Illegal Sheriff Abuses the Rights of Immigrants, and Whoever Else Threatens His Bogus Media Image. ... Product Description
An immigration specialist explores how America's reaction to heightened security concerns plays out in reality, affecting employers, schools, families. When the United States tightened its immigration policies in response to concerns over terrorism, Microsoft's Bill Gates and General Electric's Jeffrey Immelt warned that some of these restrictions were harmful to US economic interests. Further, academic and business leaders warned that the restrictions were causing many of the world's most promising international students of science and engineering to go elsewhere. Under pressure from the academic, science and business body, in February 2005 the US State Department eased the Visa Mantis Program by extending the validity of science-related visas from one year to up to four years. Will more rational policy reforms follow? US Immigration Laws examines many of the dramatic changes that have occurred to immigration laws in recent years, and points to areas that can be adjusted to reduce needless burdens while maintaining security. Many of the policy changes discussed were implemented after the attacks of September 11, 2001, but several of these laws were created throughout the 1990s, some after the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993. The opening chapter examines that very event and the remainder of the book follows the progression of modifications in immigration laws in the US up to the present. The book concludes with an assessment of the future of immigration and immigration policies. ... Read more

    Product Description
Focusing primarily on the exclusion of the Chinese, Lucy Salyer analyzes the popular and legal debates surrounding immigration law and its enforcement during the height of nativist sentiment in the early twentieth century. She argues that the struggles between Chinese immigrants, U.S. government officials, and the lower federal courts that took place around the turn of the century established fundamental principles that continue to dominate immigration law today and make it unique among branches of American law. By establishing the centrality of the Chinese to immigration policy, Salyer also integrates the history of Asian immigrants on the West Coast with that of European immigrants in the East.

Salyer demonstrates that Chinese immigrants and Chinese Americans mounted sophisticated and often-successful legal challenges to the enforcement of exclusionary immigration policies. Ironically, their persistent litigation contributed to the development of legal doctrines that gave the Bureau of Immigration increasing power to counteract resistance. Indeed, by 1924, immigration law had begun to diverge from constitutional norms, and the Bureau of Immigration had emerged as an exceptionally powerful organization, free from many of the constraints imposed upon other government agencies. ...
