Solid overview of material
This book proved to be a critical supplement to my poor immigration law course.The book provides a very helpful overview of the entirety of immigration law in the U.S., and really helps clarify the complex categories and definitions that pervade the subject.Depending on how theoretical or policy-oriented your course is, you might actually learn more about the black letter law from this book than from the course, as I did.Overall, given the low price I would recommend purchasing it even if you only think it would be marginally helpful to your studies.

(4th ed.) Good overview/foundation for further research
The most difficult thing about studying any body of laws resides, not in its substance, but in its presentation. One advantage of immigration law is that it relies heavily on fairly stable categories. This book should help anyone but the most impatient to build a first outline of the main categories of immigration law--with helpful annotations.

15 chapters: 1-4 (background information--including history and constitutional law); 5 (immigrant visas), 6 (nonimmigrant visas), 7 (zooms on student visas--a sub-category of nonimmigrant visas), 8 (removal--formerly "deportation"), 9 (inadmissibility), 10 (refugees/asyless), 11 (international law), 12 (citizenship), 13 (zooms on rights of aliens in general), 14 (criminal aspects of immigration law), 15 (ethical practice).

My main advice is to take good note of the general INA and CFR provisions under each category and subcategory, and names (and holdings, why not) of important cases. Add that to your outline, and you have a fine guide for further research. In other words, if your goal is to familiarize yourself with the field AS A WHOLE for the first time, don't get bogged down in the discussions of legal history and cases at first (yes, this is not a manual, so what's the point?)--except for the general history of US immigration law at the start of the book, which gives you a good first sense of the "spirit" of US immigration policy. You could come back to those discussions later, without the aggravation.

I do not recommend delving directly into any body of laws that is as extensive as immigration law, unless of course you have a few years to spare--but then again why waste that time? Think of books like this one as you would of maps: you don't want to have to start looking for California, street by street, starting in Washington DC. The point is this: an overview is always useful. This one should help you, if you use it properly.

Best ready reference on Immigration
This book is not only very easy to carry around but is an awesome tool for students and practitioners. Right to the point and easy reading format, a must to deal with the most complicated area of our laws. It seems that it will be a good tool for a while since there's no change to immigration laws on sight in the near future.

Incorrect information
On page 159 of the 3rd edition, it is mentioned that an individual is authorized to work with the receipt notice (for work authorization) and an SSN while waiting for the temporary employment authorization document.That is simply not true according to several Houston based immigration attorneys.I contacted the author of this book to get some clarifications but never got a response.

After I recieved my notice of receipt, I got additional confirmation of that because it explicitly states that it cannot be used as an authorization to get any sort of legal employment.

Overloading the boat concept should be national required reading.
The concept of "Overloading the Boat" should be required reading for the nation. It explains that if immigration is unchecked, too many immigrants can consume this nation's resources and sink the boat. This is a good argument for the unchecked flow of illegal immigrants crossing our border. Unchecked or uncontrolled immigration is a problem for any country.

Also, in my opinion, if too many illegal immigrants along with sanctioned legal immigrants come in too fast, the immigrants don't assimilate our culture. For example, immigrants learn English too slowly or not at all. For a nation to do well, a national language is a unifying bond. If we have to put every language on websites or phone messages, it can fracture national bonding and unity. It creates mini-states of the countries of origin and doesn't cement our national identity.

The other concept is the "Immigration Door." The author discussed the concept of how wide or how narrow the immigration door should be open. People from across the world want to come here for the freedom and opportunities that America offers. Also, America needs talent from within to progress, but also needs to look abroad to keep our competitive edge. The door opening can't be so wide that too many immigrants come in that can't be assimilated and it can't be too narrow to exclude critical talent. These factors affect the door opening.

In my opinion, we could fund legal resident students in skills areas with free grant money to offset reliance on illegal immigrant labor.For example, establish construction trades instruction at community colleges and pay the students' costs; this way, the construction industry wouldn't have to rely on illegal immigrant labor.

All in all, the book is excellent. About half of the book is full of forms and the author advises forms can go out of date and to keep current, you have to keep abreast of changes.

P.S. - Found error on Page 6. The caption on the side of the page says the legislative branch is the branch of government responsible for "enforcing" the law. It should be corrected to read that the legislative branch of the government is responsible for "creating" the law.

it let me down.
good and bad. good because it was consistent. bad because it consistently let me down. the best word to describe the book is "perfunctory". when ever i tried to learn about something that i consider "basic" i often resorted to google since the book gave no mention of it!(e.g. what are the travel restrictions on green card holders? google then taught me a green card holder cannot be abroad for over six months...that's IMPORTANT! how does a u.s. resident qualify to become naturalized? NOTHING MENTIONED! who are the different government agencies/players that are involved in the immigration process and what are their role? THAT'S BASICS!).

I love it, the service was good, it was quick and the book was in super good condition.

This is book was damaged beyond repair and badly defaced. I called California repeatedly to speak with the seller ,s/he refused to pick up my calls for sometime and after a while s/he temporarily disconnected his/her phone. It is shameful the seller has no integrity. Amazon, must insist that seller have good return polices and be accessible to talk to buyers. Considering that I paid over a $100+ for this item, the behavior of the seller is despicable.

barely a good start
I purchased this book to assist me with an immigration law class that I am auditing in a law school.I am a practicing attorney, but have not done any immigration law.This book is only 180 pages long and starting on page 81 is a list of immigration attorneys that goes on for 10 pages. This list is followed by "sample" immigration forms...So, all you are really getting here is 80 pages of text on a very complicated subject.This is the Reader's Digest of immigration books...

Fiance info on page 21
This book sure does contain info on bringing fiances to the US-see page 21and 22 for a complete description and list of forms. It also contains infoon every other type of temporary and permanent visa, the annual lottery,NAFTA, adopting foreign born orphans, the INSPASS system, green cardrenewals, US Citizenship, important addresses and a list of immigrationlawyers, etc. No other book on the subject covers so much material in sucha straightforward way. I've read them all!

Joe Arpaio has not read his own book, why should you?
If you go to Utube and look up Joe's Law...you'll stumble upon a hearing in which he admits to not knowing the contents of the book, in addition, he states that he has not read his own book.Then he goes on to say that the views reflected on the book are not his own.However he states in the very beginning that he is the main writer of this book.I'd like to see his own review of the book before I buy it myself...he should read his own book right?

Self-promoting politician Joe Arpaio admitted in a deposition on Dec. 16, 2009 that he hasn't read the book, Joe's Law and doesn't agree with everything in it.If you believe in the Bill of Rights, you won't agree with the book either.It's no surprise Joe Arpaio is distancing himself from the jingoistic, nativist rhetoric in the book, since he is being sued for racial profiling.
