Despite extensive efforts to control it, malaria is still one of the most devastating infectious diseases worldwide. This book, now in its second edition, provides a broad and up-to-date overview of the rapidly expanding field of malaria immunology and its importance in the control of this disease. The first section deals with the malaria parasite and its interactions with both the vertebrate host and the mosquitoes which transmit the disease. In the second part, the mechanisms of immunity and their regulation by environmental and genetic factors are discussed. Finally, this volume contains several chapters on malaria vaccine development, describing the application of the most recent vaccine technologies as well as ongoing and planned vaccine trials. 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Experience
Hi it was nice experience overall.
I wanted this book since long time. New edition was expensive and did not think that it would too different from the old one. So instead of going for new one i went for old one. Its condition is new.
Thanks for being prompt in sending.
thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars A real gem
People often make the mistake of hitting the bigger books with the hope that they will gain a more complete understanding of a subject. However the problem with such an approach (particularly when beginning a subject) is that more often than not, one loses sight of the key concepts and broad principles. This where i feel this book is a gem. The strength of this book is that each chapter succinctly provides you with all the main points you need to know about each subtopic. In this way you are given a solid basis and contextual understanding, enabling you to gain a deeper appreciation of immunology from larger texts.
At the start of each immunol topic in your course, read the corresponding chapter in this book first, then use your lecture notes or larger texts to fill the gaps/details.

This happens to be one of a very few review books i've kept in my extensive library.

Product Description

Since the first suffering supplicant offered a prayer to his god or the first mother cradled an ailing child in her caring arms, we have witnessed how human health and healing goes beyond any inventory of parts and infusion of chemicals. We humans are a complex melding of thought, emotion, spirit, and energy and each of those components is as critical to our well-being as our physiological status. Even if we are just beginning to quantify and document these seemingly intangible aspects, to ignore them in the practice of medicine is neglect and an invitation to do harm.

Now in its second edition, The Scientific Basis of Integrative Medicine continues to provide doctors and other health practitioners with information on complementary and alternative approaches to health, that is authoritative, scientifically based, and epidemiologically substantiated. Written for doctors and healthcare professionals by pioneering practitioners and updated with the newest research across an increasing range of possibilities, the new edition of this bestselling work –

  • Establishes the scientific basis for the mind–body connection and then documents the puissant interactions of the endocrine, immune, nervous, and stress systems that so profoundly influence our lives
  • Examines that healing dimension of spirituality, which informs but transcends the five senses
  • Investigates how hope, faith, and love aid healing
  • Discusses how the emotional presence of a practitioner affects patient outcome
  • Considers the incorporation of a unified theory that can account for the existence of health enhancing energy fields within — as well as outside — the human body

Integral physiology serves as a bridge between Western medical knowledge and the equally valuable, but less well-recognized, Eastern systems of medicine. The authors refer to it as integrative because it combines important Western biological knowledge with forms of healing that incorporate the mental and emotional, and spiritual aspects that are essential to health, because those aspects are what make us essentially human.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too confusing
The immunology section of this book is the most convoluted reading I have had in all my readings for the step 1.Frankly, the figures are far superior in explaining what the author is trying to convey.Maybe this book was helpful for others but it just frustrated me and did not expand any more than what was already more concisely described in first aid.Bottom line, not worth the time.

4-0 out of 5 stars execllent
the immunlogy section is extra ordinary with concise yet comprehensive ! itsimplified not only for usmle but also for medical carrier, so it should study first before the other topics.
I think the book needs more thorough answers for usmle questions as most of us purchase for usmle reviews not for text !

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost excellent
I love this book but the reason i gave this book 4 stars is just because they didn't bother to correct some mistakes of the seventh edition. In this edition (eighth), on page 41 (Chapter 7) Botton note says: Pseudomonas aeruginosa {endotoxin} has the same mode of action. Refering to Diphtheria toxin. It should be {exotoxin}. Another example (to show you a few) is in the same chapter on page 43 table 7-13, it says:
Nervous system
Gram-positive rods:
Clostridium tetani>>>>inhibit acetylcholine release
Clostridium botulinum>>>>inhibit glycine release
As you can see they are mismatched.
So this book is almost perfect, excellent contents but with a few mistakes in some concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Currently the best Micro Review Book
Yes folks, this is better than Made Rediculously Simple. Well, let me rephrase that. I like this book a lot better. Now dont get me wrong, MRS is a good book and I use both, but if I could only choose one, I would go with this one.

First of all, it just came out this summer. So it does have some recent updates that MRS doesnt have, particularily with the antibiotics. I also think it offers better clinical scenarios and presentations of the various bugs. It is in depth with what you need to know, yet concise at the same time. Ive used it for class, and for board prep. Another thing, is that it doesnt have those silly mnemonics that can often be very far fetched and cumbersome. And yet one more thing, but may sound silly, is that I like the font and layout better. It makes more judicious use of tables as well to drive home key points.

And the best of all, is that it has over 600 USMLE style questions. I thought for the most part, they were indicative of what you will see on the real thing. Last but not least, it also has a great section devoted to medical immunology, so no need to buy another separate book.

So if you have money to get both, do it. But if you are trying to choose between the two, I say get this one. The LANGE Pharm and Board review book is good too. Good luck. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Did not meet my high expectations.
At first glance, the format and content seemed to be thorough, well developed, and beautifully composed. I thought it would be a beneficial addition to general pathology and immunology books by being insightful and cohesive by offering an concise integrative look at the immunology of human disease.

After reading the introductory chapter, the CNS, and renal chapters I can say that the book certainly falls short through terrible editing and lack of cohesive insight. At a fundamental level, it fails by trying too hard to convey complex ideas in an overly simplified yet somehow wordy language. This problem is exacerbated by a terrible organization and flow of ideas. Rather than explain this I will instead quote:

Introduction on B cells
"Antibodies are produced by naïve B cells and are called plasma cells. These cells express immunoglobulins on their surface. In the early stages, B cells first show intracellular -chains and then surface IgM. Through the process described earlier, these cells can later express IgG, IgA, or IgE, a phenomenon known as isotype switching. The final type of surface immunoglobulin determines the class of antibody secreted... Deficiencies in either molecule lead to severe immunodeficiency states with only IgM produced but no IgG or IgA antibodies."

Renal: IgA Nephropathy
"...These usually occur after a respiratory infection. Minimal proteinuria is noted. IgA nephropathy is made by kidney biopsy only. The hallmark of this disease is mesangial deposition of IgA, which is prominently noted on immunofluorescence. This deposition is associated with focal mesangial expansion, which can be seen on light microscopy."

This book would be absolutely terrible for someone trying to learn immunology. Simple ideas are not presented in a way conducive to understanding and advanced concepts are not presented in any unique or insightful fashion. I can blast through Robbins Path or other highly advanced texts at high speeds, but with this book there are many instances where the overly simplified yet convoluted language causes you to have to read very slowly just because of terrible sentence structure and a passive tense.

In addition, the book neglects important features of some diseases. For instance, in reading about Myasthenia Gravis there is NOT one mention of germinal follicles in the THYMUS! The book simply neglects to mention this freak anomaly of B cells in the thymus.

In all, I was terribly disappointed and would not recommend this text to anyone. ... Read more

Product Description
Transfusion medicine is an excellent way for the healthycommunity to help the sick. However, service providers and patientshave much to gain from the establishment of guidelines concerning whenand how it is used. An important first step would be to introduceinformed consent for transfusion recipients. Discussions with bloodbanks and assessment of clinical demand would also be necessary, taking into account the needs of patients and physicians, and theavailability of products. Unfortunately, the efficacy and safety oftransfusion products can be difficult to ascertain. Furthermore, although major advances have been made in safety, the risks of givingand receiving blood are still seen as high. It is vital to learn what underlies that perception and how to counterit. The policies and protocols used to establish surgical criteria forblood transfusions should be explored. Finally, clinical audits canhelp evaluate the risk:benefit ratio of transfusion; they may becarried out by hospital transfusion committees but are likely to bemore successful with the support of national and internationallegislative and regulatory bodies. The implementation of appropriateinitiatives now will improve the outlook for the future of transfusionmedicine, perhaps with ex-vivo expanded haemopoietic cell therapy asthe next milestone. All these key points and controversies are explored in this book, which paints a broad picture of the current status and future trendsin transfusion medicine. ... Read more

Product Description
Therapeutic immunosuppression has very broad applications inclinical medicine, ranging from prevention and treatment of organ andbone marrow transplant rejection, management of various autoimmunedisorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), skin disease, and asthma.Whereas traditionally only a small repertoire of immunosuppressiveagents was available for clinical use, recent discoveries havesignificantly increased the number of approved agents, resulting innumerous trials to further evaluate their potential. In addition, products of the biotechnology industry -- monoclonal antibodies, cytokines, cytokine antagonists, and other products of geneticengineering that target key molecular pathways in disease pathogenesis-- have either already made, or are on the verge of making animportant impact on treatment. There is also considerable interest inthe potential of cell-based therapies (particularly hematopoietic stemand dendritic cell therapy) of allo- and autoimmunity. Importantrecent advances in the immunotherapy of allergic diseases are alsocovered in this book. Gene therapy offers considerable promise forsuppressing pathogenic processes in either transplantation orautoimmune disorders. The possibility of combining these important newadvances to maximize benefit to the patient, and to minimize possibleuntoward effects (which are also given extensive coverage in thisbook), is one of the most exciting challenges of contemporarymedicine.

This volume is intended both for practising physicians and surgeonsand for biomedical scientists at the graduate/postdoctoral levels, andis designed to provide the theory behind these various approaches toimmunosuppression, and to provide state-of-the-art reviews of currentdevelopments in each area. Each chapter is contributed by one or moreexperts in the field. There was a need to bring this informationtogether in a single volume, as much of the key recent developmentshave been dispersed throughout the biomedical literature, largely inspecialized journals. Since, as in the past, important developments inimmunosuppressive therapy in one branch of medicine (i.e.transplantation) are likely to benefit another (e.g., dermatology, rheumatology, gastroenterology), cross-disciplinary coverage of themechanistic basis of the various therapeutic strategies in a singlevolume is likely to convey the potential of advances in therapy in themost coherent manner possible. ...
