Indiana (America the Beautiful, Third Series)
I grew up in Indiana and currently have a niece living in Indiana and raising small children. This book is so well written and COMPLETE with it's information,that I feel certain her children will enjoy it.I have aleady read my copy!

I really liked this book, its written for the younger crowd, full of facts, cool places to visit and lots of color photos. Has blurbs about famous people from there and a nice array of places to visit while your there. Very old fashioned.
This book is definitely out dated, but...I couldn't NOT finish it. I just had to know what happened. I can't say that I didn't enjoy it because I did, however, some of it was a little (as my Grandmother would say) far fetched! I found the woods and the Harvester's work interesting. I enjoyed the historical medical/medicinal aspect of the story. I must admit though, it was the personal relationship between the Harvester and the Love Of His Life that I found to be a little...ridiculous! Very old fashioned! I hope this doesn't sound like a bad review, I know I can pass this book on to my 78 year old mother, but I wont suggest it to my friends.

Wonderful book!
Another classic from Gene Stratton Porter. I had read this book initially as a girl and when I found it on Amazon I knew I had to read it again. You need to give this book to your children. This book is about good wholesome living, nature is described realistically and beautifully. The harvester was a man who knew what was right and did it. He learned right, lived right, and he loved right. The classics like these are what today's children need to be reading when they get into their early teens. Wonderful book!

Great Reading!
I loved this book! It was written in an era when romance and adventure were treated in a clean and wholesome manner!
I would recommend this for any age group! I also recommend you visit Geneva, Indiana! This is where the Author lived for a time, and there is a small Museum there, dedicated to her works!

Favorite love story ever!
There is no story it's equal. When I think of a man truly lovinga woman, this book comes to mind. It's the most deeply intimate telling of one man's heart, mind and soul. Is it possible love like this exist between a man or a woman for the other? This story is to be cherished for its lofty ideology.I view the Harvesters love for the woman as saints have loved God...deeply beyond what most of us can grasps with our worldliness. I might buy this book for my teenage nieces--they should read this story. Why? I wonder if they could, in their wildest fantasies, imagine a young man loving them similarily. Perhaps they may be more choosy in whom they date.

I'll read anything by Emily!
Emily Kimbrough is the co-author, with Cornelia Otis Skinner, of the classic, OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY.On her own, she was a prolific author, and I wish that her publishers would re-issue more of her books.HOW DEAR TO MY HEART is a 1991 re-issue, underwritten by the Delaware County Historic Society, of her reminiscence of her earliest childhood in Muncie, Indiana at the turn of the 20th century.The original printing was in 1944.

As always, Ms. Kimbrough's writing is lyrical, and one easily can imagine through her those defining years for our nation, a moment when electricity and automobiles first were entering everyday life, and the telephone still was in the experimental stages.Ms. Kimbrough's vivid style makes that moment understandable, and she remembers her childhood, the places and the people, with great affection.

Like all children, she assumed that her realities were the only ones, but the truth is that she grew up in one of the most prominent and affluent families in a small town and, as such, her upbringing was that of an American princess.Still, her family's excellent values shine through, as they do in all her books, and she demonstrates a slice of life that never again will be recaptured.Christmas in Muncie in 1905 is somewhere between Dickens and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, and it makes for marvelous reading.

Consistent with all of her other books, there are plenty of funny anecdotes interspersed with studies of the characters in her life, her paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother (and that grandmother's next-door neighbor, President Benjamin Harrison) and her nanny, the daughter of former slaves.

The charming drawings add to the overall feeling of the book.I believe that the same artist also did the illustrations for the early Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace; essentially, these stories are about similar little girls in similar towns.Maud's girls are fictionalized and Emily's story is her own, but the spirit of both their styles are much the same.

Tortured
One may say that Gertrude Baniszewski's control over the children in her house amounts to a form of mind control.If there was ever a case in which an adult ordered the torture and eventual murder of another child, this case would be an example.In a cruel and disturbing look at 1960's America, "House of Evil" is an harrowing book.

Some may suggest that the Baniszewski was "rough around the edges" or "possessed loose morals".It is had to argue with these statements.In short, Gertrude Baniszewski took in Sylvia and Jenny Likens for a regular fee while her parents were away working for a carnival.Sylvia rubbed Mrs. Baniszewski the wrong way, causing her to be the victim of sensational torture in which all of the other children of the house were involved.Incidents included sexual humiliation, forced tattooing, burning, scalding, beatings, and starvation.

Yet as the story progesses, one begins to wonder why Sylvia allowed herself to be a victim to such savagery.Not being with her real family, she could have left or even went to police.Had Sylvia developed a known attachment to her torturers, the attachment could be labeled Stockholm Syndrome.However, Sylvia developed no known sympathy for her captors and seemed free to leave.

Though a short read, the complexities of this case make it a very interesting read.The story falls outside of the boundaries of other works of true crime that readers will find themselves "rubber-necking"at this absurd scene.

Horrifying
I read about this case on [...] long before this book (or the movie AMERICAN CRIME) which I did not bother to see. I recognized the symptoms of abusive family life from other cases, but this case is beyond others.

When I was training as an educator, we (my classmates and I) had to take a seminar called "Recognizing Signs of Abuse". From reading about this case, there were many clear signs that should have alerted neighbors, teachers, pastors, etc. Sylvia went from being a happy teenager to being depressed and withdrawn. She got thinner, dirtier, and more fearful. The sudden change in her demeanor was in itself the biggest red flag. The adults outside of her foster family should have immediately recognized what was going on.

Unlike today, there was little advocacy for children's welfare in the 1960's. The concept of "child abuse" was virtually unknown, and parents who beat their kids could get away with it, calling it "discipline" and "correction". When a neighbor's child told her mother "the woman next door is kicking the girl", her mother said "well, they're obviously punishing her for being bad." If my mother had heard that a neighbor was kicking a child, she would notify the authorities. But in those days, nobody cared.

I think some of the blame falls on Sylvia's parents. They knew that Gertrude Baneziewski was living in squalor with a brood of children, and they knew she was living with a younger boyfriend, and they knew the house was filthy, so why did they leave their daughter there? My theory is that the parents were ignorant. What kind of parent leaves their child with someone they barely know?

The lesson we can all take from this is that "bullies" and "abusers" usually stop if they know they're being watched. If I see a guy screaming at a kid for dropping an ice cream cone, I might say "awfully temperamental today, are we?" Abusers aren't going to stop unless someone lets them know that what they are doing is wrong.

The neighbors never said anything when they saw Sylvia being abused in her home.

Good book if i could read it entirely...
I saw the movie An American Crime and became interested in the case because I just couldn't believe all of this had actually happened.
I ordered the book last year around november and received it in december, however i was busy reading some other stuff so i didn't start reading this book until mid-february of this year. Unfortunetly I just realized that several pages are missing from my edition and I don't know if anyone else had that problem. After page 106 I see all the pictures that are included in the book, however after the last picture the story resumes on page 139, is that normal? Because I don't think it is.

It's a real shame considering it's been almost 3 months since I received it and I don't live in the U.S, not to mention there is no other way to read the book.

Bad luck I guess...

Very well written.
This book is well written. You can vividly imagine things that happened. He explains it very well. It is very sad. The one thing that stuck out to me is the update in the book. Wonderful poetry collection!
My children and I have really enjoyed this collection of James Whitcomb Riley's poetry. This volume contains our favorite Riley poems, and we share them by reading aloud.

IU Press did a wonderful job reprinting this book. The artwork and the new typeface are beautiful! I am very glad to have this on our shelf.

Charming and true to the times in which it was written
I grew up having a few favorite poems read to me from this book.There are some poems that certainly require you to conform to the country lingo in which they're written.Given the fact that this book was originally published in the late 1800's, it provides a wonderful look into history, poetry as entertainment, and a way of speaking that is not heard much anymore.My very favorite poem is "The Bear Story".It is "written" by a boy named Alex and has so many charming twists, turns and changes of mind mid-stream that it's both engaging and funny.Of course this book contains "Little Orphant Annie", and my other favorite, "The Raggedy Man."If you're a lover of old poetry or fun poetry, this is certainly a book that deserves a spot on your shelf.Enjoy! ... A rollercoaster ride of romance, revenge, and Revolution
Alice Roussillon is a surprising heroine considering this book was published way back in 1900. Living in the then French village of Vincennes, Alice is all for turning over the city to the Americans. She even helps sew an American flag and brashly climbs to the top of what serves as town hall to plant it.

But then those pesky villains, the British army, come and take the city away from the fledgling American presence. Alice just keeps getting in deeper and deeper trouble. First she hides the flag and refuses to surrender it to the British commander. Then she shoots (but doesn't kill) a British officer (who strangely enough goes on to fall in love with her.) She helps her French foster father escape, wounding another British soldier with her sword, which she handles expertly by the way. Enough is enough and the commander finally imprisons Alice and threatens to execute her.

Alice's American boyfriend flees to try and find help. He's chased by a band of Indians who want his scalp. He's captured, abused, and forced to go through the gauntlet, but he's able to get away and hook up with the legendary George Rogers Clark and his small band of men.

Meanwhile, Alice is told that her boyfriend has been scalped. She attempts to flee her captives and in the course of events she's shot! But don't worry. Through an extreme set of circumstances she survives and is reunited with her boyfriend who still has all his hair.

If there's one main nitpick it concerns the character of Father Beret, a Jesuit priest. One moment he's a kind old man trying to guide Alice to Catholicism. But when the situation calls for it, he's a strong defender with a good right punch who can also wield a sword with the best of them. Early in the book he receives a mysterious letter but we the reader never do get to learn what it says. It's obvious Beret has an interesting back story, but author Maurice Thompson never goes into it. A wasted opportunity if you ask me.

Another missed opportunity is Alice's background. She was found as a child living with Indians and was placed in the care of a French family. At the very end of the book we're simply told that she finds out who her family is but we're not told how. How did she end up living with the Indians? What happened to her birth parents? Again, Thompson just drops the subject.

One last thing: don't expect any politically correct language when it comes to the Native Americans in this book. Keep in mind the era when this book was written. ... Read more

A Big Fan
I've been enjoying this book for the last 35 years.It is always a treat.I easily recommend it to anyone that wants to escape into the past for a few days.
This book inspired me to collect as many of Meredith Nicholson's writings as I could; but in my opinion, the rest fail to meet this high-water mark.

Where women are strong and men are gentlemen.
