Dense Political History of Indonesia The book however is not an easy read. It is dense and full with names and not always easy to keep track of. It is definitely not a book to give to someone on a birthday. It is however perfect when someone is interested in the development of government in Indonesia with names like Hatta, Suharto and Sukarno. Extensive endnotes ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Indonesia is rich in natural resources, but vulnerable to devastating natural hazards. Its economy was booming until the late 1990s, when it was badly damaged by the Asian financial crisis. After 30 years of the corrupt and oppressive Suharto regime, Indonesia is now struggling to redefine itself as a constitutional democracy – but internal ethnic and inter-religious conflicts threaten the very future of the nation, if they cannot be resolved peacefully. This richly illustrated Profile is a picture of a country in economic, political, and environmental crisis, seen from the perspective of the poor and marginalized communities with whom Oxfam works. Editorial Review Product Description The political downfall of the Suharto administration in 1998 marked the end of the "New Order" in Indonesia, a period characterized by 32 years of authoritarian rule. It opened the way for democracy, but also for the proliferation of political Islam, which the New Order had discouraged or banned. Many of the issues raised by Muslim groups concerned matters pertaining to gender and the body. They triggered heated debates about women’s rights, female political participation, sexuality, pornography, veiling, and polygamy. The author argues that public debates on Islam and Gender in contemporary Indonesia only partially concern religion, and more often refer to shifting moral conceptions of the masculine and feminine body in its intersection with new class dynamics, national identity, and global consumerism. By approaching the contentious debates from a cultural sociological perspective, the book links the theoretical domains of body politics, the mediated public sphere, and citizenship. Placing the issue of gender and Islam in the context of Indonesia, the biggest Muslim-majority country in the world, this book is an important contribution to the existing literature on the topic. As such, it will be of great interest to scholars of anthropology, sociology, and gender studies. |

Editorial Review Product Description This fascinating study compares and contrasts the immense internal migration movements in China and Indonesia. Over the next two decades, approximately two-thirds of the rural labour force is expected to migrate, transforming their respective societies from primarily rural to urban based. Whilst both countries face similar challenges as hundreds of millions of people move, the policies implemented and their consequences are very different. Using an extensive range of qualitative and quantitative data, the contributors explore the impact of migration on migrants and their families, as well as the rural communities they leave behind and the urban communities they enter. They discover that migrants earn less and face discrimination in the urban labour market, although more so in China where there are greater restrictions. However migration contributes to a more equal distribution of income in urban China and to lowering poverty in rural China, and migrants fare better on health and poverty indicators in Indonesia. The Great Migration will strongly appeal to researchers, economists and sociologists with a special interest in migration and development studies. Policy-makers in both China and Indonesia will also find much to fascinate them within this highly original book. |
