Each section has a short introduction, suggested annotated reading lists of picture and chapter books to motivate student interest in that geographic area and a mnemonic sentence, rhyme, or story that will help students remember the makeup of the country or continent discussed. The mnemonics differ from the usual, in that they are directly connected to the region, people, or culture being studied. There is a simple map of the region and activities tied to the national standards for geography.Activities focus on ideas to integrate global studies with all other areas of the curriculum and on ways to motivate teachers and students to extend the lessons and create their own ideas.

Product Description

In past years, teaching children about conservation and environmental issues might have been an optional side topic to complement an earth science curriculum, but in today's educational climate, "being green" is a subject with great relevance and importance.

This book combines a wide variety of techniques to help students understand environmental issues and gain the skills needed to take action. The children's literature and classroom activities suggested in Think Green, Take Action: Books and Activities for Kids are appropriate for elementary school students from grades three through seven, covering three major environmental issues: endangered species, resource depletion, and pollution. After students have a grasp of the causes of these environmental problems, the final chapter presents ways to take easy action that can create ripples of change across the world. Educators in museums and nature centers, home-schooled children, and their parents comprise an appropriate secondary audience for this instructive text.

School media centers should support the curriculum. Ideally, teachers and school media specialists should collaborate to make the best use of all the resources in the school media center. However, too often both groups workin isolation, failing to capitalize on the potential benefits studentswould reap from their collaboration. This book is a great starting pointfor anyone seeking to establish greater collaboration between language artsteachers and school media specialists.Senator outlines a program whichincludes school media specialists and language arts teachers planning, teaching, and assessing together, rather than in isolation. In addition todescribing the program, Senator provides many useful sample resource unitsthat can be used immediately by teachers and school media specialists.Thebook primarily focuses on the middle school level, but Senator alsoincludes a chapter on how to adapt the program to elementary and secondarylevels. Overall, it is a wonderful idea source! Teachers, librarians, andmost importantly, students, should benefit from the use of a program likeSenator's. ... Read more
