Product Description

Drawing on her long experience as a school librarian, the author uses this middle school library programming book to help you promote free voluntary reading through innovative workshops, staff training, collection development, and collaborative curricular planning. Her goal: to revive the enthusiasm for reading that is often lost by the middle school years. Her recommendation: creative library literacy programming designed to pique flagging interest in reading for pleasure. Chapters focus on how to use the school's calendar and curriculum to get the time needed for the focused program as well as ways to manipulate budgets, get grants and other monies to build a strong literature-oriented program and collection. One chapter focuses entirely on how to get faculty to become readers of YA and children's literature in order to become models for their students. Other programs discussed are author visits, book fairs, whole school reading programs, journaling for readers and many more. Also included is an annotated bibliography of great reads. Grades 4-12.

5-0 out of 5 stars a new model for literacy instruction
I had read a couple of articles by Follos so I knew I would be ordering her book. I was not disappointed.
Her success in motivating older students to read through author visits and reading aloud to them is an encouragement to me as a literacy coach: I am not alone in believing in the power of shared oral reading and writer visits for older students.
When teachers present authors like rock stars and "Oprah" the books kids are invited to read, that enthusiasm spills over into the very act of reading itself.
Motivating adolescent readers to pick up a book and then engaging them in reading that continues for a lifetime is our job as literacy leaders. Follos will show you the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This is a great resource for school librarians and others who hope to help their young patrons become active, life-long readers. The upbeat tone and quick delivery make this title a pleasure to read, while also imparting invaluable tips and strategies that had me reaching for my highlighter within the first chapter.Follos has not let the disheartening statistics and mounting evidence discourage her in her quest to get and keep her students reading. Her optimistic, yet practical, view is quite refreshing. ... Product Description
Information skills instruction is a fundamental and vital part of K-12 education in the twenty-first century. As information specialists, library media specialists have a leadership role in teaching these skills. The Handy 5 has been demonstrated to be an effective model for planning, teaching, and assessing information skills instruction. Successful implementation of the Handy 5 integrated assessment model requires library media specialists and teachers to reconsider their roles working with students. If we truly believe that all students can learn and that the role of teachers and library media specialists is to enhance learning, new ways of structuring the learning process must include systematic and frequent assessment throughout the learning process. This five -step model provides a framework for planning learning activities to accommodate frequent and systematic evaluation for the benefit of the students' success. The purpose of Part 1of this book is to explain the Handy 5. Part 2 outlines the theoretical background and presents research which evaluated the model. Finally, Part 3 provides useful examples of the model's implementation. All royalties go to the Kansas Association of School Librarians ... Read more

Product Description

Walker and Shaw link the teaching of ten commonly taught reading strategies such as sequencing, compare and contrast, and prediction to picture book titles. Each chapter of the book provides a strategy, a graphic organizer to teach it with, and an in-depth modeled discussion of how to use the strategy with two or three books. Additionally, each chapter furnishes an annotated bibliography of other books that would lend themselves easily to the teaching of this strategy. Grades K-3.

The book is written particularly for the use of teacher librarians who are being asked to support actual reading instruction as part of the instructional program in their library media center (as opposed to the usual program of literary appreciation, reading motivation etc), but are not given long periods of time to work with students. These lessons are quick and self-contained. Each lesson comes with reproducible templates to make laminated graphic organizers that can be used again and again with various books to teach each of the ten strategies. Elementary teachers would also find this book useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced for Material Included
I am a teacher who is taking advantage of my library background to become a school librarian. As I browsed literature in the field this book was exciting for me.I very much want to continue my literacy instruction in my new position.Unfortunately, I would consider it highly overpriced ($30+) for the content given.Included are 10 basic reading strategies (including KWL charts, prediction skills) that is likely familiar to those who are experienced in the classroom.Beyond that it costs twice as much as books tend to when offering "cookbook" lessons for teaching (and I mean no insult by that phrase owning several of these books myself). This book would be helpful to those without a background in teaching, but otherwise is a waste of money.
