Excerpt: Under the auspices of Professor Dr. Rüdiger Wolfrum, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, an initiative was launched in 2004 to compile the Max Planck Encyclopedia of Public International Law (MPEPIL). This work represents a new edition of the Encyclopedia of Public International Law published between 1991 and 2001 by Professor Dr.. The Max Planck Encyclopedia of Public International Law (MPEPIL) was finally launched in September 2008 and can be accessed at www.mpepil.com Upon its completion, MPEPIL will be an updated, comprehensive work covering the essential topics in international law. The new work is not just a revision of Professor Bernhardts encyclopedia. Instead, new authors completely rewrite nearly all entries. MPEPIL includes numerous new topics in order to capture the latest developments in international law. To do justice to the changing nature of international law, an increased emphasis will be placed on the relevance of each keyword for contemporary international law. Particular attention will be paid to the contextualization of each topic within international law as well as the presentation of current trends while maintaining a focus on the mainstream/majority view. The goal is to avoid a purely Eurocentric perspective and this will be achieved with the assistance of academics and practitioners from various legal backgrounds and perspectives. The intention is that MPEPIL will be a work that reflects international law from a global perspective whi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=20124324 ... Read more

Product Description
The International Criminal Court has been operational since mid-2003, following the entry into force of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court on July 1, 2002. The Rome Statute is among the most complex international treaties, a combination of public international law, international humanitarian law and criminal law, both international and domestic. The Commentary provides an article-by-article analysis of the Statute. Each of the 128 articles presented is accompanied by a bibliography of academic literature relevant to that provision, an overview of the drafting history of the provision and an analysis of the text. The analytical portion of each chapter draws upon relevant case law from the Court itself, as well as from other international and national criminal tribunals, academic commentary, and the related instruments such as the Elements of Crimes, the Rules of Procedure and Evidence and the Relationship Agreement with the United Nations. Written by a single author, the Commentary avoids duplication and inconsistency, providing a comprehensive presentation to assist those who must understand, interpret and apply the complex provisions of the Rome Statute. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars too many wrong footnotes...
While this is certainly a very helpful new book written by a knowledgeable professional, it is a real pity that the book is very disappointing as far as referencing is concerned. I have been using it for a large legal research project and it turns out that you can absolutely not rely on the footnotes to find the source of the citation. Sometimes, the citation would lead to something totally unrelated to the point made in the text, or the reference wrongly cites a trial judgment when it should actually cite an appeal, and vice versa. This has been frustrating and it is obviously time-consuming to then find the right citation yourself (or give up and be unable to use the idea). As a student, I find it strange that a book that is sold at such a price gets away with referencing that would probably cause trouble for students if someone finds out!
Otherwise, the summaries on the elements of the Rome Statute are clearly very helpful and it is an advantage that the early ICC cases are always discussed first rather than the decisions of the ad hoc tribunals. ... Read more

Product Description
Savigny, Friedrich Carl von. Private International Law, and the Retrospective Operation of Statutes: A Treatise On the Conflict of Laws, and the Limits of Their Operation in Respect to Place and Time. Translated, With Notes, by William Guthrie. With an Appendix Containing the Treatises of Bartolus, Molinaeus, Paul Voet, and Huber. Edinburgh: T. & T. Clark, Law Publishers, 1880. xii, 567 pp. Reprinted 2003 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. LCCN 2003052774. ISBN-13: 978-1-58477-367-2. ISBN-10: 1-58477-367-7. Cloth. $150.* Reprint of the second revised edition. Savigny [1779-1861] was an important German jurist and an excellent scholar of Roman law. A principal member of the historical school of jurisprudence, he had a keen interest in its role in the subsequent development of European law. Private International Law is a volume drawn from his System of Modern Roman Law (1840-1849), an eight-volume study of contemporary legal systems based on Roman law. As the translator observes, this volume is valuable because it "deals with a subject of great practical importance, as to which the opinions of foreign jurists have always been respected in the British courts. And not only has the eighth volume itself been cited as an authority in our tribunals, but English writers have borrowed and enforced its doctrines with more or less exactness of reproduction" (Introduction, 9). Beyond its lucid exposition of a complex subject, this book offers a wonderful introduction to Savigny's monumental study. With! an appendix containing a biography of Savigny and an index of English and Scottish cases. ... Read more
