Great story communicates the message
My kids read this book at school and loved it.It's a fun story about a cat who goes online and gets into trouble when he agrees to meet in person with another online kitty, "Happy Fluffy Kittyface."Kittyface turns out to be a big bulldog.

Fun story deals with a dark topic in a sensitive way with the traditional cat vs. dogs rivalry (Tom & Jerry, Sylvester & Tweetie Bird).

Recommend it highly.

Nancy Willard is the pioneer of cyberbullying awareness and cyberbulling legal issues.This book absolutely must be in the library of any person concerned about cyberbullying and cyberthreats.

A great resource to help adults connect with young people in their cyber world

Nancy Williard is active in Cyber Bullying prevention and has a variety of books and articles on the topic.This book was used for reference in my masters thesis on cyber bullying prevention.It will also be an excellent source for parenting children in the cyber age.

This book is a great guide for parents moving kids through the "web" of the internet.She gives specific suggestions for young kids (e.g., Have all of their kid-safe sites bookmarked.They can only go to bookmarked pages w/o mom or dad.) through late teens (Let them make mistakes on the 'net while still at home w/our support!).Perfect resource for me.Quick read.Reminds me not to blow up when a kid comes to me with some issue- or they won't come to me again!Nice parenting advice and cyber-guide.Recommend.

Have not had time to look through the whole book.But so far it looks like there is little in it of use to me.I feel I wasted my money.

Internet for Seniors/Dummies
This is a goot tool/book for seniors who need to read in big print. Bought for my Dad and he loves the big print and the ease within the pages.

Read it at your computer for best results
Move over seniors! This book is useful for any age. It offers specific helps and walks the internet user through the process so that you feel comfortable with each new topic. I find it works best to sit in front of my computer and practice what I read to solidify each suggestion. My only complaint is that the writing in the examples is too small and grayed. Working at the computer solves this problem, since I can now see it full screen.

Are older women afraid of computers?
The woman on the cover of this book looks like a character out of a pharmaceutical ad for an anti-anxiety drug. The idea behind this series is good, but the image of a sad, gray-haired woman in conjunction with the word "Dummies," seems demeaning. It's no wonder that, in the reader reviews, most of the purchasers of this book are adult children of seniors and not the seniors themselves. A humorous cover would have been more effective and not as insulting.

I sent this to my Mom and Dad.
I consult to businesses about online safety and one of the biggest customer communication challenges has always been how to educate people about being safe online without scaring or boring them.This book does a great job of achieving that balance.Statistically, senior internet users are more likely to be targeted by online fraudsters/scammers for a variety of reasons.What the authors do is describe the many situations that can lead to trouble and the relatively simple (and intuitive) ways to avoid it.The book covers online dating, online gaming, social networking, sharing pictures, sharing personal information, using email, using financial sites, talking to the grandkids about staying safe online, etc.What it drove home to me is that there are more minefields out there than we care to imagine and that when mistakes happen, they can be very serious.As such, I ended up buying a copy of the book for my parents because they are frequent online users, they are only aware of potential online pitfalls at a cursory level, and like many other seniors, if something were to go wrong, I would not be first on their list to call. ... Excellent, Comprehensive and Comprehensible resource
Greg Smith has done a very good job of providing a comprehensive and comprehensible resource. While Greg's approach to parenting might sound autocratic to some parents, but the fact is that it is ultimately a parent'sresponsibility to protect his kid (not that school and society at large arenot responsible to protect our kids). While it educates technically non-savvy parents with the innards of the technology, it also provides a clear strategy to adopt the technical tools, corresponding to each age group. It is not a high level book, rather a hands-on approach book. He mentions many tools for monitoring, filtering and blocking purposes and one such tool is familyarmor.com.

Excellent Job!

A wealth of practical information
The Internet and Web have so much to offer for both adults and children.I use it everyday and my children are also online daily.I check the news, email, and do research.I even met my spouse online.Also, my kids play games, chat with friends and explore.It's a great learning tool and allows them some freedoms to explore their interests.However, as the Web and Internet continue to impact our lives, there are very real dangers that I want to know about so that I can be sure my kids are safe when they are online.

What Greg Smith has been able to provide in his book are the specifics of how you can take the necessary steps to make sure that the Internet and Web is a safe place for your kids. Many books and guides speak in terms of general rules and ideas, but what Mr. Smith provides is real details and tools that you can put into action.He identifies the risks and issues being exploited and provides the leading tools, his experiences, and recommendations to protect you and your children.Even experienced technology professionals will find the comprehensive list of tools and technologies in his book a huge help.I have been using the Internet and Web for a long time and there are several things in his book that I did not know about, and that I want to keep my kids from knowing about.

Greg Smith has written an important book for parents. Using his experience as a senior IT leader and a parent, he lets parents know the risks of children being connected and how to protect them.

The author makes the reader aware of the many dangers of connected electronic devices, not only computers but also cell phones.At a very young age, children are using computers and the age when children have their own cell phones seems to creep down every year. Many parents are not as technically sophisticated as their children, especially parents of teenagers.He urges parents to take control by learning about technology, using the tools available to safeguard and monitor children's activities on-line, and talking with your kids.His easy to understand recommendations let parents know what they need to do, going as far as recommending specific products and providing "How-to" instructions, customized for the age of your child.

Taught me to collaborate with my kids on online safety
This book helped me form a blueprint for how I could monitor my 2 kids' computer use which I then presented to them. They participated on the plan by agreeing and disagreeing on it. So we have a collaboration that they both cooperate with. For me, just that they know they are being monitored keeps them safe, they watch out what they're into `coz mommy can see.

specific guide on internet safety
The book is very detailed, providing a specific guide on forming an internet safety plan. I like it because it pointed me out to an important thing: that it's not doing the checking up behind his back but keeping upfront with him about why you need to do it and how you're going to go about it. It's about respecting his rights as a person---but a minor person who needs to be monitored just quite a bit yet.

This book is very basic. It deals more with sexual predators and the possibility of kids getting carried away from not knowing whom they are talking to. Just as everyone needs to learn to cross the street without getting hit by a car, everyone needs to learn to use the Internet safely - and this applies even if you think you are a technophobe. Linda Criddle explains that installing protective software is not enough. many guidelines
Of the several books Roddel has written about the Internet, this appears to be the most extensive and advanced. Much of what is written is for the parents of children who might be at risk through various activities on the Internet. To a large extent, the contents include the material in her other books.

Some of the advice in this book might be problematic. For example, on page 33, it recommends that for children visiting chatrooms and using instant messaging, that they or you hide your IP address. This can depend on the chatroom or IM software. Fundamentally, you cannot hide the address, because this is needed for any two way interactions. (Unless you use an anonymiser, but that is another story.) Perhaps the chatroom software has an option so that your interlocutor cannot get the address. Which really only works when the software is running on some server computer, that both you and the other person are accessing. It is not guaranteed that the software will let you do this.

Elsewhere, she points out that usernames are descriptions. So that "they should not indicate your race, age or gender". [...].

The chapter on online fraud is best suited for an adult reader, who is more likely to have money to lose in such frauds. Most of the advice is valid. A charity affiliated or run by a religious organisation might have a mailing list of co-religionists, and it could send out appeals for donations for various worthy and real causes. I think what the text is trying to say (or should say), is that real charities are unlikely to ask for donations via unsolicited email. In other words, there are two qualifications to the book's statement - "unlikely" and "unsolicited".

Online Children Require Adequate Online Guidance!
  One of the major strengths of the book is the author's discussion of how some of the more popular software programs available today are designed to block problem Websites and their indecent material. Although these programs do not assure 100% successful filtering, the author does rate them and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each one. The author correctly states that human oversight is always superior to filtering software. Therefore, parents, teachers, and others should always exercise adequate control over the child use of the Internet and the online services.

     Another strength I found fascinating was the description of clever programming and marketing ploys used to gain the attention of those online. As the author points out, some people will use extremely clever means to ensnare children and adults alike. To his credit the author cites examples of other threats apart from sexually explicit material.He writes of twelve children who followed easy-to-follow instructions found on the Internet on how to build homemade grenades.A number of these children were badly hurt when their grenades exploded.Other children online have formed close intimate ties with others and have actually left home to meet their newly found "friends".

     The author rounds out the book by offering an adequate glossary of terms, a list of safe Websites for kids, instructions for surfing the Internet, setting up and operating parental control software, and a very helpful guide to detect the presence of suggestive material.The book is footnoted to provide readers with documented sources.Readers should visit the Kidshield Website for updated and additional information.

     The incidents cited in the book are reason enough to be on guard for the welfare of children today.Sadly, at present we cannot rely upon local, state, and federal governments to protect children from the exposure of negative influences that exist on the Internet, whatever they may be.We should take immediate a! ction to make such threats much less of a problem and burden.This book offers a thoughtful response to a problem every parent, teacher, and other concerned persons in this technological era should become familiar with.Get a firm grip on this problem before this problem gets a firm grip on your kids! ...
