5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive of Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, not Ithaca, New York
Heywood and Thomas give a thorough recounting of Cornell's history from the founding in 1853 up through the present day. While most friends of Cornell will probably be satisfied with Charles Milhauser's Cornell College: 150 Years From A to Z, this is a great two volume set for those interested in the comprehensive story. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I bought this book and related books from this publisher for my child's preparation for the gifted program test. It was fun to do the practices together with my child. The materials are well organized and suitable for the specific test. It definitely help my child and me understand what we would expect and how to solve some of the tricky problems. I'm sure that with all those practices my child was well prepared and confident for the test. ... Read more

Product Description
The book's three sections mingle myth and history withstyle and grace and no small amount of humor. The beginning essays aregiven over to memories of Paul Engle in his heyday. The second groupfocuses particularly on those teachers--Robert Lowell, John Berryman,Kurt Vonnegut, for example--who made the workshop hum on a day-to-daybasis. Finally, the third section is devoted to storytelling: talltales, vignettes, surprises, sober and not-so-sober moments. Engle'sown essay, The Writer and the Place, describes his "simple, and yethow reckless" conviction that "the creative imagination in all of thearts is as important, as congenial, and as necessary, as thehistorical study of all the arts."

Today, of course, there are hundreds of writers' workshops, many of them founded and directed by graduates of the original Iowaworkshop. But when Paul Engle arrived in Iowa there were exactlytwo. His indomitable nature and great persuasive powers, combined withhis distinguished reputations as a poet, loomed large behind theenhancement of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. This volume of fine andwitty essays reveals the enthusiasm and drive and sheer pleasure thatwent into Iowa's renowned workshop.

A Community of Writers is an utterly engaging tributeto the early, Paul Engle days of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Iowa'sfirst creative writing course was offered as early as 1896, and NormanFoerster gave Iowa's creative writing program a push in the 1930s. Butit was Paul Engle, who took over the workshop in 1943, "with hisindefatigable drive, entrepreneurial skill, and boyish enthusiasm,"John C. Gerber writes here, "who brought the workshop its fame andinternational attention." Creative writing, says Philip Levine, is"one of the most amazing growth industries we have," but in thosedays, there was just Iowa. And Iowa was Paul Engle, some corrugatedsteel barracks (miserable in the heat, deafening during a rainstorm),and an ever-changing cast of exceptionally talented writers.

For A Community of Writers, 30 writers--including DonaldJustice, Robert Bly, Marvin Bell, and Bharati Mukherjee--bring to lifeEngle, the other instructors, and some rollicking good (and bad) timesin Iowa City. While W. D. Snodgrass claims that "almost no one wasdisappointed by [Robert] Lowell's teaching," Levine claims that "tosay I was disappointed in Lowell as a teacher is anunderstatement.... A teacher who is visibly bored by his students andtheir poems is hard to admire"; especially when those studentsincluded two future Pulitzer Prize winners, one Yale winner, oneNational Book Critics Circle Award winner, three Lamont Prize winners, and one America Book Award winner. Lowell, John Berryman, RandallJarrell, Dylan Thomas, and many other extraordinarywriters-instructors weave their way in and out of these stories, butnone so much as Engle. "Paul Engle should get a posthumous medal fromthe Coast Guard for all the lives he saved," says Kurt Vonnegut. "Nowriter in all of history did as much to help other writers." --JaneSteinberg ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely reading
This is a wonderful, wonderful book--and one that appealed to me for many reasons, some personal and some not. First, if you love reading about writers and writing (as I do), you'll love this book. Good writers andbrilliant poets open their hearts in their essays and write frankly aboutthe tough times they have gone through--e.g., the times they hated theirwork, the times they weren't producing anything. And also they write aboutthe troubles and joys of being young, and what it is like to have brilliantand flawed mentors in a very special, challenging academic situation.

Atfirst, I thought the book was meant to be an unabashed hagiography of PaulEngle. Nope. Midway through the book arrive the essays from formerworkshoppers who, like W.D. Snodgrass, were NOT Engle's favored proteges;those essays give you even more insight into the workshop and Englehimself.

More personally, the book brought me home to Iowa City, where Ilived for over 12 happy years. Although most of the book's recollectionscenter on the 1950s and 1960s, some of the places and businesses thewriters describe in their essays thrive today.

I had a lovely timereading this book, and I think others will, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Behind-the-Scenes Look at Iowa Writer's Workshop
This is one of the most entertaining collections of essays that I have ever read.It gives a true behind-the-scenes look at the world-renowned Iowa Writer's Workshop. Many of the essays are tremendously funny.Thisbook appeals to a far wider audience than just M.F.A. students.Anyone whois interested in writers and writing will find this book tremendouslyentertaining, informative and thought-provoking.(However, if you've everattended an M.F.A. program, you will find this book particularlyinsightful.)The essays read like little stories of their own.Read thisbook--you won't regret it!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I Owe an Iowan
I love this book and I think Tommy Grimes did a great job with it. I have been a fan of Iowan scribblins' ever since Jed Sow's short story collection, "Whoever's Barkin' Needs to Stop" dropped last Easter. When I came across this collection I was lit to pop.

Wanda had been to one of her Red Hat Society Book Club meetings and wound up leaving this one out on the coffee table. Well, I poured a pot and dugin! Good stuff. I especially got a kick out of Denis Johnson's "Work". That's something a guy like me can relate to. And the way he described that Marriott workout room steambath is right on. I've had to clean up places like that, and believe Lonnie --it's NO FUN. If I had a nickel for every time I had to yell back at Corson, "Bring the bleach, we've gotanother lovewadded towel!" I would have a bag of slimy nickels.

But, I'm disappointed there was no mention of Bob Whitney. Really, what Iowa short story collection is complete without at least one of his recollections of life playin' bass guitar, readin' pamphlets on the promised land, and gynecological malfunctions?!?!

I suggest the next edition include my favorite: "Prostate Billy and the Jelly Finger."

That'll give 'em something to think about back in Milford
