Product Description
The rise of Iranian cinema to world prominence over the last few decades is one of the most fascinating cultural stories of our time. There is hardly an international film festival anywhere that does not honor the aesthetic and political explorations of Iranian filmmakers.

At the vanguard of this ascent has been Mohsen Makhmalbaf, and no one better personifies Iranian cinema. His life and career have been shaped, and in a way been defined, by the Islamic revolution and the complex historical influences beyond it. Critically, vividly, and sometimes pitilessly, Makhmalbaf's films provide a mirror of Iranian history and culture, both before and after the cataclysm of the revolution. From the start, Makhmalbaf has explored the relationship between the individual and a larger social and political environment. As a result, his work serves as an extended commentary on the historical progression of the Iranian state and its people. And if Makhmalbaf's films are at times polemic, he nonetheless brings a poet's sensibility to urgent and eternal issues--faith, love, regret, suffering, injustice--of the human condition.

In The Films of Makhmalbaf Eric Egan examines the closeand volatile relationship between a highly popular art formand the politics of power in Iranian society. Through a criticalanalysis of Mohsen Makhmalbaf's films, the book tracesthe development of Iran's national cinema both beforeand under the Islamic Republic. An artist whose work isprovocative and never far from controversy, Makhmalbaf'sfilms have always been reflexive meditations on thenature of cinema and art within a society. As Iranian societyhas changed, so his films have progressed, from ardentlyadvocating the declared ideals of the Islamic regime to criticizingthe failures of the revolution and examining difficulttopics, all the while elucidating the social and political roleof art and the artist. ... Product Description

More than two decades after their parents rose up against the excesses of the Shah, increasing numbers of young Iranians are risking jail for things their counterparts in the West take for granted: wearing makeup, slow dancing at parties, and holding hands with members of the opposite sex. Kaveh Basmenji, who spent his own youth amidst the turbulence of the Islamic Revolution, argues that Iran's youth are in near-open revolt for want of greater personal freedom. Yet not long ago it was young Iranians who occupied the American embassy, or who vied for martyrdom during the disastrous Iran-Iraq War. Basmenji interviews members of one of the world's youngest-populated countries and tries to get to the heart of the matter: What do Iran's youth want, and how far are their elders prepared to accommodate them?

5-0 out of 5 stars New Visual Culture of Modern Iran: Graphic Design, illustration, Photography
An amazing book !!! A great piece of work and really well presented. Could be a nice gift for anybody who likes visual arts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A VisualFeast of Iranian Art Forms
Reza Abedini, a graphic designer and professor at Tehran University, has collected an impressive number of works of contemporary photography, graphic design, and illustration to share in this very well designed book.Large in scale and size, this book contains over 150 pages of the finest in the illustrative arts, examples of which may be new to most readers.

Though all of us know and respect ancient Persian art and decor, surely some of the most complexly beautiful art ever created, the current trends absorbing the minds and talents of Iranian artists is a fascinating mixture of poetry, humanistic statements and reactions to the nearly constant states of upheaval in this seminal land.In a tightly written but informative introduction Abedini shares a succinct history of the movements in art in Iran as the country passed through three generations of artists influenced by the 1979 revolution: those artists at the peak of their creative powers at the time of the revolution; those involved in the revolution and developing strong ideological responses to that experience; and the generation of now, involving artists who respond in retrospect.

What follows are full color pages of photography (brilliantly composed portraits of individuals and groups), illustrations for newspapers incorporating photography, drawing, calligraphy and collage, posters for exhibitions (including examples created by the gifted Reza Abedini herself!), book covers, CD covers, and experimental posters. The design elements are strong, fluid with the elegance of the Iranian language, rich in color and spirit.

At this particular time in our history, with our somewhat distorted reportage of Iran as depicted on television and the news media clouding our appreciation of an extant yet ancient culture fully transported into the present, this fine book provides an important bridge toward understanding a fascinating country. As is so often the case the artists are our shaman and offer us a more humanistic view of differences and similarities among our global neighborhood. This book is a must for all students and practitioners of art in this country: it is also highly recommended as an introduction to the creativity of a nation seeking understanding!Grady Harp, April 06 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Living Inside and Outside Censorship
URBAN IRAN is yet another fine book on design and graphic art from Mark Batty Publishers. Some casual readers might view this well designed and edited survey of art as yet another aspect of the plentiful books on graffiti art, but for the reader who takes time to not only enjoy the richly colorful pages so generously offered here but to also read the fine essays, there is much to learn, appreciate and understand about Iran as a country cramped by years of censorship. The effects of harsh laws against self-expression are bound to be most obvious in the street graffiti, that universal sounding board for resentment and anger and fatigue over the establishment.

Photographers Karan Rashid and Sina Araghi have captured the vistas of the countryside and the cities (especially Tehran) both with and without art and with and without people. The results are richly personal - each photograph making a statement in visuals alone. The commentary that accompanies the images of street art(including a particularly sensitive introduction by Editor Buzz Poole) allows the reader to appreciate the daring strides made by street artists in a government so very closed.Chapters such as 'The 206' (a popular automobile in Iran) allows the reader a journey through the countryside, demonstrating the differences between the East and the West in commentary and in images; 'A1ONE' speaks volumes in graffiti images on the streets without words; PORTRAITS OF THE EVERY DAY utilizes excellent commentaries along with images of the people and the buildings to inform us of life as it continues to exist under constantly changing influences from the outside.

For this reader the last half of the book devoted to THE ART OF PUBLISHING is the most satisfying. After the necessary 'climate information' offered in the first half of the book, this section is a treasure house of colorful, imaginative art and design that stands as Iran's image to the world outside its borders. The art here is magnificent and the graphic design elements are some of the finest published in this series of Mark Batty books. It is here that all the peripheral clutter of a country surrounded by wars and factions is secondary to the words and images of the artists of Iran.It is a tender statement and one that needs wider exposure.Iran is rich in culture and history and art, and finally we have a book that brings this to our attention - today- when we need to see and hear it. Highly recommended on many levels.Grady Harp, February 09

5-0 out of 5 stars A world in flux expressed in art
The focus here is on graffiti and street art in contemporary Iran along with streets scenes depicting everyday life, especially in the bustling, angry metropolis that is Tehran.Karan Reshad and Sina Araghi do the photography while writing about what life is like today in Iran and about the life and intent of the artists. There are also essays such as "Slab City" by Brian Ackley, and "Roots of Rebellion" by Coco Ferguson. There is some information about the artists, some of whom are young taggers who operate underground away from the censoring eyes of the theocratic regime.

In a sense this book is about rebelling against established authority as urban taggers are wont to do throughout the world. In another sense this is a graphic report on life in Iran and how it plays out under the authoritative eyes of the ayatollahs. One gets a sense of flux and unsettlement, a culture in transition, part of it resisting change, part of it hoping for change.

The street art is colorful, more thoughtful perhaps than that of other cities, and at times whimsical.A1ONE, one of the featured artists has a most distinctive style combining cartoon figures with something like science fiction Cubism tinged with a noticeable edginess. He also does stencils including the ambiguous but clearly ironic "ILOVEATOMBOMB."The influence of the West is sprinkled throughout as it mingles with the values of the traditional society. An example is from the street artist BigChiz who gives us, on what appears to be a metal maintenance door, an enigmatic drawing of Kurt Cobain. One of the essays by Coco Ferguson and Sohrab Mohebbi entitled "Hair Is for Head-Banging" is about Iran's metal scene ("...away from thrash toward progressive, almost funk metal...").

Some of the photos are of published art, which in the case of Gholamali Maktabi tends to the colorful, the smiling, and the non-political: art for children's books. There is an abstraction by Ali Biyashi also apparently from a children's book.Photos of book covers in which one can see the ghost of the influence of Western artists like Paul Klee and others are presented.

In addition to the sense of the old ways struggling against the new--the theocratic culture vying against the mass Western culture--I also had a sense of life being lived irrespective of the politics: people selling brooms and watermelons, men's shirts and soccer jerseys.I also had the sense that Tehran is more like one of the planet's great urban centers than it is like the rest of Iran.Perhaps it is a truth to realize that cities have a culture of their own partly independent of the country in which they formed, each having more in common with their huge sister cities in other countries than they have with their rural areas. At any rate, the people at Mark Batty have chosen in some of their books to focus on the art culture of the cities and have shown the similarities.

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting book
Urban Iran by Mark Batty, PublisherThis book made me sad. The photos depict art found in today's cities of Iran, principally in Tehran. With the political strife of the last few decades and the iron leadership of a theocratic government artists have been severely limited or censured in what they are allowed to say or portray, so art in every form nearly died.Yet artists are born and yearn to create. Recently they have become emboldened in what they are presenting, often disguised but giving hidden messages, which people are beginning to discern. This book catalogues the often angry art found in public places and in even children's books today in Iran. The artists were interviewed and speak out with careful articulation about their plight and the stirrings of protest. It is a fascinating book but makes one sad to see the grief expressed in the art. This is a bold, history-making book, important for the world to see and important as future documentation of life in today's Iran. ... By exploring topics such as the Internet, print press, advertising, satellite television, video, rock music, literature, cinema, gender, religious intellectuals, and secularism, this unique and wide-ranging volume explains Iran as a complex society that has successfully managed to negotiate and embody the tensions of tradition and modernity, democracy and theocracy, isolation and globalization, and other such cultural-political dynamics that escape the explanatory and analytical powers of all-too-familiar binary relations.Featuring contributions from among the best-known and emerging scholars on Iranian media, culture, society, and politics, this volume uncovers how the existing perspectives on post-revolutionary Iranian society have failed to appreciate the complexity, the paradoxes and the contradictions that characterize life in contemporary Iran, resulting in a general failure to explain and to anticipate its contemporary social and political transformations. ... This study focuses on Islamic and secular feminisms, especially as they treat such issues as individuality, gender roles, sexuality, cultural "authenticity," and interculturalism in Iran, examining controversies that developed chiefly after the end of Iran-Iraq War and the death of Ayatollah Khomeini. Shahidian emphasizes challenges to governmental policies in daily life, Islamic reformist politics, and secular opposition. He investigates various ideological and political means that female activists employ to resist state policies and achieve legal benefits. Relying on reformist Islamic writings, oppositional literature, personal contacts with feminist authors and underground activists, Shahidian discusses how individuals experience and respond to coercive gender policies. ... Product Description
In the essays collected here, Abbas Milani uses an impressive array of cross-disciplinary Western and Iranian theories and texts to investigate the crucial question of modernity in Iran today. He offers a wealth of new insights into the thousand-year-old conflict in Iran between the search for modernity and the forces of religious obscurantism. The essays trace the roots of Shiite Islamic fundamentalism and offer illuminating accounts of the work of Iranian intellectuals—both men and women—and their artistic movements as they struggle to find a new path toward a genuine modernity in Iran that is congruent with Iran’s rich cultural heritage.

Lost Wisdom: Rethinking Modernity in Iran challenges the hitherto accepted theory that modernity and its related concepts of democracy and freedom are Western in essence. It also demonstrates that Iran and the West have more that brings them together than separates them in their search for such modern ideals as rationalism, the rule of law, and democracy.

These essays will reward the scholar and the general reader alike, and will go far toward explaining the enigma that is Iran today. ... Read more

Lost wisdom
Rethinking Modernity in Iran
Dr. Abbas Milani in his book, in a collection of several essays written since 1991, embarks to dislodge the Islamist main argument against modernity in Iran which they proclaim modernity is the pretax of western foreigners for colonial and cultural domination. Dr. Milani, himself a product of modernity in Iran, graves to prove modernity has its seeds in Iran for centuries and nurtured by most learned Iranians. The foundation that he builds for his argument starches from ancient Persia to modern time. He bases his thesis on individuals who left ample proof of his reasoning. There are shining moments recorded in history of many nations. And Dr. Milani, by his research and foresight, presents these shining moments of Iranian history discernable for its modernity proclamation and its failed attempts to permeate to Iranian national mentality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read
One of the best books I have read in the last couple of years. Dr. Milani's eloquent and well researched comparative study of literary texts written in Persian from Saadi to Golestan and Parsipour, sheds light on a multitude of interesting topics such as modernity. His well-thought knowledge of Iran as well as the West coupled with his academic approach creates an engaging reading that is quite pleasant and informational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rewarding Read: Milani Will Win U Over With Wit and Content
By illustrating that Modernity and its accompanying social, literary and political structures are not only relevant but also historically germane to Iran, Dr. Milani has dispelled the familiar notion that Modernity is a Western phenomenon and its adoption by Iranians, therefore, a confession of inferiority. The 'modern' format of the book - a series of biographical sketches -- is judiciously employed to cover substantial ground from the discussion of Sa'di as a harbinger of democracy and equality to that on the plight and role of the Iranian diaspora in its exiled state. This work is a must-read for anyone interested in Iran, modernity or world history in general. Dr. Milani's anecdotal style captures readers' attention, even those who are entirely unfamiliar with the subject matter. He is as brilliant an author as he is a professor and researcher. This work is an incredible contribution to academia and the global pool of knowledge. In fact, I have yet to read something of Dr. Milani's that is not superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding work!A must read by all interested in Iran!
Dr. Milani has done it again! The "Lost Wisdom" is an outstanding achievement by Abbas Milano who is fast becoming the eminant scholar on Iranian history and political affairs, if not already there.

In his famous work, "The Persian Sphynx", Dr. Milano demonstarted his amazing capablities as an objective and thorough researcher of history.Despite the injustices that he as a political prisoner had suffered at the hadns of government agents controlled by the late Mr. hoveyda, Milani mainatined his academic honesty, and reported the former Prime Minister for what he really was.

In this book, Milani is so amazingly find the paralells and commonalities between the Irnaian thinkers and those of the "West."His masterpiece clearly shows the craving for individual liberites and human rights among all nations, races and times, albeit each in their unique molds.

The "Lost Wisdom", at these times that all those who love Iran are so desparately searching for a way out of the Islamic dictatorship without being labeld as having sold out to the "West", is the greatest intellectual contribution that any Iranian scholar could have made.

The native Iranina reader will so quickly identify with the passages and have that nostalgic feeling all over. Those with less familairity with Iranian history and culture will soon fall in love with the beautiful and elequont, yet easy, style of Milani's writing, and will follow page after page.

My sincere thanks and congratulations to Dr. Milani for this wonderful piece of literary work.

Ghaza Omid was born in Iran, during the reign of the Shah, into the second of her father's two families, both of whom he abused, neglected, and deserted. As a child she witnessed death and destruction daily and faced near starvation while surviving the armed conflict to escape the danger of the Iranian revolution and Iran-Iraq war. She grew to adulthood under the dictatorial Islamic regime of Khomeini and his mullahs. In reprisal for daring to quietly defy false Islamic rules imposed by authorities and for demanding to be treated as an equal, she was abducted by Sepah Pasdaran, the Islamic Iran special police, a prelude to an orchestrated death sentence for alleged resistance to the regime. Escaping her abductors by jumping from a moving car, she made her way through France and Holland to Canada. Today she resides in Washington, D.C. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A shocking account of the Islamic Revolution in Iran
This book is a fascinating look at the reality of growing up female in Iran prior to and after the Islamic Revolution and life during the 8 year war with Iraq.

The author's story will shock, sadden and anger you as you learn about the horrible treatment of women not only by the extremely oppressive regime of the Ayatollah Khomeini who, upon gaining power immediately reversed any progress and put the country back in the stone age, but even worse the cruel, abusive treatment of the author by her own family that has left her scarred both mentally and physically.

After reading this story you will come away with a much better understanding of just how worthless and burdensome women are viewed under Islam. I found this book easy to read and difficult to put down.

My only complaint and reason for not giving 5 stars was that the author, with a lifetime of pain and misery, still defends and justifies Islam as a peaceful and loving religion. I must say that 1400 years of history proves to any open minded person that has studied Islam that it is the worlds most intolerant religion and the Prophet as a ruthless warlord who used war and violence to convert other religions and kept them silent through oppression and threats of death.

Overall I recommend this book for anyone wanting more information about life in the Middle East.

4-0 out of 5 stars Downside of Islam and Downside of Poverty
When I first read and reviewed this book I left only a cryptic notation, "downside of Islam" but I neglected the opportunity to point out that the book also captures the downside of poverty as well as the enormous cultural and emotionial indignities toward women that are sanctioned by Islam and not only practiced in Islamic countries but also exported to Europe and the USA, where women are treated behind closed doors in a manner that would put any normal American behind bars for years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read story about life in Iran
Ghazal's book offers a rare and insightful look of Iran, a land that is usually viewed via the political prism of its leadership and rarely from the point of view of its people. The author offers a compelling story of a girl and a young woman living in a land that is best described by the name she chooses for her ontology. And indeed, "Hell" is a difficult word for a homeland. But while reading the tale it becomes apparent that "Hell" is not a description given to the beautiful land of Iran but rather, to the political reality that engulfed the country and, with it, the life of a young girl.

Ghazal begins her story in Abadan, a picturesque city located minutes from the Iraqi border where she grew up as the youngest of eight siblings. As a child, Ghazal experienced the life before the revolution - life of relative freedom in where friendships with Jews were permitted and where reading the bible was not considered an unforgivable sin. These times and her inquisitive personality created a girl that would forfeit her need to reflect upon and question her surroundings) -something that means only trouble in post-revolutionary Iran.

Her story is a personal one of an inquisitive girl who is trying to follow her mind and her heart and that of a country busy with revolution and war that has little room for any form of dissent.

The book recounts the life before the revolution and the events that have led to the rise of Kohmeni. It offers an insider's view of the revolution, the US embassy hostage crisis and the war.

Having studied Islam for 17 years and following a struggle wither own faith, the author knows Islamic law. Her studies, documented in the second portion of the book, address many important questions and misconceptions about Islam. Her research affords some insight into why Muslim countries seem to be prone to terrorism and examines the link between poverty, ignorance and terrorism

Living In Hellis also a book dedicated to theoppression of women. Omid's personal experience s a woman who experienced abuse , is , unfortunately, not unique in countries like Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyz and other Middle East countries where traditional male dominated societies still practice barbaric "honor" killings

Ghazal Omid calls herself "A Rebel With A Cause" because her work have became one deeply associated with the cause of freedom in Iran, with human rights and with the life of many Iranian prisoners for whom Ghazal is one of the only voicesof hope. "Living in Hell" was written also for these brave men and woman - since it shows that difficult and even impossible journey of strugglecanend with freedom and hope.

Nir Boms is the Vice President of the Center for Freedom in the Middle East

5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerfully personal account
Living in Hell is a powerful window into the daily struggles of women in Iran.It is filled with heart wrenching personal accounts of Ghazal's struggle against the oppressive nature of Iran's Islamic government and male dominated society.Anyone who desires to gain insight into the struggles faced by women in Islamic dictatorships should get this book, you wont regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth Seekers Only
If you are a truth seeker, then this book will change your life forever. Ms. Omid has touched the very depths of my soul by her honest account and for sharing her experience, strength, and hope. I urge everyone to read her book! The subject matter is difficult to read if you have a conscience and are concerned about women and men in Iran. She may not be an expert on every act of abuse that happens around the world, but she does know first hand the type of abuse that goes on in the country she grew up in. I can not understand where the feminists and human rights activists are when it comes to the abuse women endure in Iran. Where are they?I can only deduce that those who ridicule such an honest account are the same types of people who thought Hitler was "good" for Germany. They turn their heads and dismiss the reality while unimaginiable atrocieties occur daily, especially if privilege and power are in their favor. Ms. Omid never accepts "status quo" and is not silenced by those who would consider themselves superior because they have different genitals. Her book is a reminder that one empathetic person in one's life can and does make a difference for the better. We can say "NO!" Most amazing is the way in which Ms. Omid puts her literal life on the line daily to speak up for those who have no voice. Her unconditional love for the people of Iran and her beloved country is indescribable. Because of Ms. Omid's book, I am extremely encouraged that the people of Iran can and do have the ability to stand up and stop the madness that their horrific, dispicable, murderous government is thrusting upon them. They need a little help from the rest of the world. Those who truly care are "the rest of the world!"Ms. Omid and her book is a gift to humanity. I recommend this book to everyone!!!! May her valiant spirit touch your heart too! ... Read more

Product Description
This book contains papers representing the results of the latest research into the relationship between the 'imperial' culture of the Achaemenids and local traditions. Some of them are devoted to the Southern Caucasus, especially to latest archaeological excavations and to investigations into specific categories of archaeological finds. Other articles concern other regions of the Achaemenid world. The article by L. The article by S. Sajjadi presents readers with the results of interesting research, which has been going on in Sistan. ... Read more
