2-0 out of 5 stars Way, WAY Out of Date
First off, this book feels like just another churned-out book in a series, and it turns out that's exactly what it is.That wouldn't be so bad, but the Culture Shock! books are intentionally banal so as to stay away from any hint of controversy.

Although 12 years may not seem like a lot of time (published 1992), it is almost 1/4 of modern Israel's history, so almost by definition this book is outdated.Imagine trying to read a book about the USA from the 1940s and having it be relevant today. That's kind of how it feels.

2-0 out of 5 stars Practically a waste of money
I lived in Israel from 1995-2000 and bought this book just before going over. I thought it might be good to buy the book anyway.Sadly upon getting to Israel in 95 I found much of the information was very out of date and was not much help at all in the "klita" (integration into society) process. There were many things that book left out that would be "olim" should know, but recruiters will not tell you or will whitewash when asked about. As for the great & powerful Israeli army, theymay have had a lot of respect at one time, (i.e. the 1950s - 80s)but it seemed popularity was dying (in the years I was there), especially when you think of Israeli politics, religious fanaticism and the territories. Now it has even lost more of it's prestige. There are many other things in this book that could be challenged, but it would take up too much room on this review. I would tell would be buyers not to bother.Standard travel guides, and talking to friends already there helped more than the book did. Many things one will find out on one's one, whether one wants to or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm ready to move to Israel.
This is the coolest travel book I've ever read! After reading it, I wanted to start packing my furniture and things (3 months early). Mr Winter shows you the vast differences between the Israeli and Western way of life, yetin such a manner thatyou already feel like you belong there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and intelligent guide to being Israeli
Culture Shock! Israel is not so much a travel guide to Israel if you're looking for physical landmarks and tourist sites. It's a guide to the soul of Israel--its people, culture, and history. The guide explains everything from serving in the Israeli Defense Forces to immigrant society to casual wear. It explains how Israelis perceive the world and themselves, with much humor as well as interesting facts. At the end, there is a cultural multiple choice quiz in which you, the reader, are given a bunch of scenarios and asked to choose the best answer based on what you've learned in the book. And as a special treat, the book even throws in how to walk and talk like a sabra ... Read more

Product Description
A unique Israeli national culture--indeed, the very nature of "Israeliness"--remains a matter of debate, a struggle to blend vying memories and backgrounds, ideologies and wills. Identifying popular music as an important site in this wider cultural endeavor, this book focuses on the three major popular music cultures that are proving instrumental in attempts to invent Israeliness: the invented folk song repertoire known as Shirei Eretz Israel; the contemporary, global-cosmopolitan Israeli rock; and the ethnic-oriental musica mizrahit. The result is the first ever comprehensive study of popular music in Israel.
Motti Regev, a sociologist, and Edwin Seroussi, an ethnomusicologist, approach their subject from alternative perspectives, producing a truly interdisciplinary, sociocultural account of music as a feature and a force in the shaping of Israeliness. A major ethnographic undertaking, describing and analyzing the particular history, characteristics, and practices of each music culture, Popular Music and National Culture in Israel maps not only the complex field of Israeli popular music but also Israeli culture in general. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Cultural Israel
Though many travel to Israel and it is very Westernized, it is good to remember that there is a Religion and cultural base that is not taken lightly.
The source of good information to be followed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to basic Israeli culture
This book gives a good brief introduction to the history, sights and people of Israel, though it is not extremely detailed or thorough. This is certainly sufficient if you are going for a business trip (the focus of the book) or a short vacation. As the book states, there are only a few good general rules since the population in Israel comes from very diverse backgrounds - in general you will have to watch and see!

The book starts with a brief history and then a discussion of the various major political and religious groups.A section of Jewish holidays is also provided, though there are some major customs that are left out (such as the bonfires on Lab b'Omer).

As a bonus, you get a mini-guide book in a few pages. It mentions the major cities and the prevalent attitudes of each. While some major festivals are given, approximate dates are not provided. If you are interested in sight-seeing, get a good travel guide book as well.

The book does discuss what to do if you are invited to dinner (or any other meal), what to generally expect in transportation, what to wear (for business), daily routines and family life, cultural values and how Israelis consider friendships. This book is certainly not exhaustive or all-inclusive, but will give you general ideas about how many people behave.

The section on security was rather small (one page) considering the importance in daily life in Israel. From an American perspective, some insight into how screening is done (i.e. you may have to open your car trunk before entering certain places) would have been a helpful addition for those who wouldn't expect it.The book suggests following all instructions given, which is a good general rule even if you have other expectations.

Though it is nice that the book is fairly small, it would have been better to add a few more pages to give just a bit more detail.I've mentioned a few missed points above, but in addition there are no instructions for dealing with police (not that this is a likely event), helpful tips such that you usually must flag down a bus from a stop, negotiation techniques in markets, e-mail etiquette or even how the banking system works (since there is a definite business focus in the book). There is also a small addition that needs to be made - on Page 11, it should be noted that you will typically find the two-round-pronged European-style plug, not a three-pronged angled plug.

For the price, this book is a good way to gain some ideas of the cultural and political attitudes in Israel in a short amount of time. If you are a procrastinator, you certainly can read the entire book on the plane!

I'm including the table of contents below, since as of this posting, it was not available and you can not see inside the book.

Product Description

This important volume rethinks the conventional parameters of Middle East studies through attention to popular cultural forms, producers, and communities of consumers. The volume has a broad historical scope, ranging from the late Ottoman period to the second Palestinian uprising, with a focus on cultural forms and processes in Israel, Palestine, and the refugee camps of the Arab Middle East. The contributors consider how Palestinian and Israeli popular culture influences and is influenced by political, economic, social, and historical processes in the region. At the same time, they follow the circulation of Palestinian and Israeli cultural commodities and imaginations across borders and checkpoints and within the global marketplace.

The volume is interdisciplinary, including the work of anthropologists, historians, sociologists, political scientists, ethnomusicologists, and Americanist and literary studies scholars. Contributors examine popular music of the Palestinian resistance, ethno-racial “passing” in Israeli cinema, Arab-Jewish rock, Euro-Israeli tourism to the Arab Middle East, Internet communities in the Palestinian diaspora, café culture in early-twentieth-century Jerusalem, and more. Together, they suggest new ways of conceptualizing Palestinian and Israeli political culture.

Contributors. Livia Alexander, Carol Bardenstein, Elliott Colla, Amy Horowitz, Laleh Khalili, Mary Layoun, Mark LeVine, Joseph Massad, Melani McAlister, Ilan Pappé, Rebecca L. Stein, Ted Swedenburg, Salim Tamari

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on Israel/Palestine
rather than focus oh names & dates and the usual fare, this book is a great resource on Israel/Palestine and gives you information hard to find elsewhere, whether it is an analysis of Joe Sacco's artwork, Palestinian films, or a look back in time to the old city of Jerusalem pre-Brittish mandate. A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrifically thought-provoking collection of essays!
Thisbook contains some of the very best scholarship currently available on the cultural politics of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Carol Bardenstein's essay on the implications of cross-casting and "passing" in Israeli and Palestinian films alone is worth the price of admission!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disgusting
Sure, there's plenty of fascinating material on Levantine popular culture in this book. But I think that too much of it is simply a disgusting paean to racist attacks on human rights, with sneering taunts directed at any attempts by Israelis to protect their rights.

Yes, there are discussions of Israelis being thrilled by the prospect of finally being allowed to visit nearby Petra, on the Jordanian side of the border. And there is even an admission that it is "preposterous" for an Egyptian video to imply that European Jews "deserved to suffer genocide" and that Arab suffering is the result "of Jewish existence."

Yes, there's quite a bit of material that a scholar could find useful. And there has to be a place even for books that support racism and attack human rights. But the place for my copy of this one is my trash can. ... Read more

Product Description

This book studies the impact of cultural factors on the course of military innovations. One would expect that countries accustomed to similar technologies would undergo analogous changes in their perception of and approach to warfare. However, the intellectual history of the Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) in Russia, the US, and Israel indicates the opposite. The US developed technology and weaponry for about a decade without reconceptualizing the existing paradigm about the nature of warfare. Soviet 'new theory of victory' represented a conceptualization which chronologically preceded technological procurement. Israel was the first to utilize the weaponry on the battlefield, but was the last to develop a conceptual framework that acknowledged its revolutionary implications.

Utilizing primary sources that had previously been completely inaccessible, and borrowing methods of analysis from political science, history, anthropology, and cognitive psychology, this book suggests a cultural explanation for this puzzling transformation in warfare.

The Culture of Military Innovation offers a systematic, thorough, and unique analytical approach that may well be applicable in other perplexing strategic situations. Though framed in the context of specific historical experience, the insights of this book reveal important implications related to conventional, subconventional, and nonconventional security issues. It is therefore an ideal reference work for practitioners, scholars, teachers, and students of security studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review for The Culture of Military Innovation
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This meticulously researched volume presents a rigorous case study in comparative strategic cultures and the revolution of military affairs (RMA). It addresses two central questions:first-- what explains how military innovations, based on similar technologies, develop in different nation states?Secondly--how does a "new theory of victory" originate in different cultural settings? It compares and contrasts the cultures of the United States, Israel, and Russia and how they have approached and interpreted the changing nature of warfare.According to the author, the most recent roots of RMA can be traced to the mid 1970s when standoff precision-guided munitions (PGM) were introduced. The Russians were the first to recognize that PGMs would radically change modern warfare and constitute a fundamental discontinuity which they called the military-technical revolution (MTR).RMA and MTR are terms describing "radical military innovation that render existing doctrine and forms of combat obsolete."
Mr. Adamsky contends that the cognitive art of each national culture dominates and conditions the manner in which their militaries integrate strategy, doctrine, operational concepts, organization, and new weapons technology.
The author argues that the American way of war has relied on material superiority, massive firepower, and advanced technologies over a fighting style focused on an intellectual approach of creative maneuvering and strategic innovation. This evolved from an American cognitive style that is inductive, logical-analytical, and centered on the object being independent from the context in which it is embedded.
The Israeli way of war was founded on a siege mentality, the quest for absolute security, the ability to improvise, and tactical offensive excellence. The Israeli's viewed heroism, combat experience, and leadership as the essence of military art rather than theoretical knowledge or formal education. This resulted in a weak institutional commitment to the areas of military theory and doctrine. They developed and procured new weaponry but treated it as a force multiplier for their current concept of operations rather than something that could change the existing military architecture. Israeli cognitive style is based on a pragmatic, problem-solving approach in which doing comes before understanding.
According to the author, the Russian way of war was based on the notion that battles are won by men and not machines. Technology was considered lifeless if divorced from human and operational factors. As a result, the requirements for weapons were based on doctrine and operational concepts and not the newest technology. Their approach was institutionalized by selecting the best and brightest officers for their general staff. These officers were extensively trained and were expected to have encyclopedic military knowledge. In this intellectual atmosphere, the Russians developed futuristic strategies and creative theories regarding the nature, conduct, and future of warfare. They did, however, lack the material capacity to put their theories into effect on the battlefield. The Russian cognitive style was oriented toward "holistic-dialectical" thinking.Understanding an issue and the unifying principles that underlay all its interacting systems was more important than doing.
This volume has a highly academic and uneven literary flow, an annoying redundancy of key ideas, and seventy-seven pages of detailed notes. Regardless, its originality, the extensive use of primary sources, and the critical thought-processes employed, make it an ideal reference for military strategists, students of security studies, scholars, and those interested in applying cultural models to organizational behavior.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant analysis of the evolution of modern military thought

Author offers a new and fascinating perspective on the development and application of the new military strategy in the last chapter of the Cold War.His extensive and scrupulous research on this matter presents Soviet Union as a herald of the new paradigm in military affairs, the United States as a technological creator of the new set of military tools and Israel as a pragmatic user who puts these two - theory and practice to the test, ironically against the previous generation Soviet military machinery and theory of it'sArab allies. The book is very professionally written but at the same time is easy to read. It's a must have piece not only for a professionals but also for a wider circle of military enthusiasts around the world.

Product Description
Menachem Mautner offers a compelling account of Israeli law as a site for the struggle over the shaping of Israeli culture. On the one hand, a secular, liberal group wishes to associate Israel with Western culture and to link Israeli law to Anglo-American liberalism. On the other hand, a religious group wishes to associate Israeli culture with traditional Jewish culture, and to found Israeli law on traditional Jewish law. The struggle between secular and religious Jews has been part of the life of the Jewish people in the past 300 years. It resurged in the 1970s with the rise of religious fundamentalism and the decline of the political and cultural hegemony of the Labor movement. The secular group reacted by shifting much of its political action to the Supreme Court which since the establishment of the state has been the state organ most identified with entrenching liberal values in the country's political culture. In a short span of time in the early 1980s the Court effected extensive changes in its jurisprudence, most strikingly adoption of sweeping judicial activism which is widely regarded as the most far-reaching in the world. The Court's activism provided the secular group with the means for intervening in decisions of the state branches over which the group had lost control. With Arabs being a fifth of the country's population, an additional divide in Israel is that between Jews and Arabs. Drawing on notions of multiculturalism, political liberalism and republicanism, Law and the Culture of Israel offers fresh insights as to how to manage Israel's divisive situation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Holy Land
In my opinion, I think Israel is a great country to learn about while having several reasons in mind that include that Jewish people make up about 80% and Arab people (quite a number being Palestinian as well as other Arabs)numbering about 20% of the population, including all the different cities in this area include Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Eilat, Acre, Haifa, and Nazareth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is a perfect book to help you understand and appreciate Israel's rich heritage. It is an extremely well-written and highly grounded country guide, that provides the reader the opportunity to become immediately versed in the country's diverse past history, present situation and culture. I found it to be a thorough and up-to-date guide which is both educational and entertaining. A very useful timeline is included. The book is illustrated, throughout, with excellent color photographs and maps. The material is presented without bias, which makes for a wonderful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a beautifully photographed and contemporary book that is a wonderful overview of Israel for readers 9-12. Provides a responsible and authentic coverage of the countries history and government, environment and economy and lifestyle. Particularly helpful are the appendices provided at the end of the book including: a Time Line, Further Information (providing websites, videos and books for further reading), economy and culture facts, a glossary, and maps that situate the cultural and economic aspects of Israel. Three authentic Israeli recipes are included that can easily be made by readers 9-12.

One of the very best introductory books on Israel.Highly recommended.

We read in this book that Syria and Egypt's massive attack on Israel in 1973 was "caused" by "Israel's insistence on keeping all of Jerusalem and retaining the recently acquired occupied territories."(p. 29)We also read that Palestinians on the West Bank are "subjected to mass arrests. The Israelis cited security considerations to justify these acts."(p. 17).No word here or elsewhere about Palestinian terrorism, only about the Israeli response. Here is the book's explanation of the Zionist movement:"The goal of Zionism was to establish a homeland where Jews would not be a minority: because no matter where the Jews lived [in the Diaspora], they would be spiritual prisoners of a non-Jewish society--meaning, they would always question what the non-Jewish world might say about their every move."(p. 62)No word here about pogroms, discriminatory laws, expulsions, death camps. Not recommended. ... Product Description

The prohibition against pigs is one of the most powerful symbols of Jewish culture and collective memory. Outlawed Pigs explores how the historical sensitivity of Jews to the pig prohibition was incorporated into Israeli law and culture.
Daphne Barak-Erez specifically traces the course of two laws, one that authorized municipalities to ban the possession and trading in pork within their jurisdiction and another law that forbids pig breeding throughout Israel, except for areas populated mainly by Christians. Her analysis offers a comprehensive, decade-by-decade discussion of the overall relationship between law and culture since the inception of the Israeli nation-state.
By examining ever-fluctuating Israeli popular opinion on Israel's two laws outlawing the trade and possession of pigs, Barak-Erez finds an interesting and accessible way to explore the complex interplay of law, religion, and culture in modern Israel, and more specifically a microcosm for the larger question of which lies more at the foundation of Israeli state law: religion or cultural tradition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Favorable - Familes in Ancient Israel
This book's first strength is that it is divided into sections which describe the family based upon each scholar's area of expertise. So, Meyers takes the archaeological discussion, and Perdue takes the theological discussion.
Meyers does a good job of describing the way in which rural settings differ from urban settings in terms of the family. She uses inductive logic to demonstrate her position about the family in Ancient Israel. Meyers describes hard evidence in the material culture, such as the shape and design of houses, and then makes statements about the amount of occupants based on population densities in other rural
villages in the world. So, her numbers aren't hard facts, but they are probably excellent ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Behind the Biblical Family
This is the book for anyone who has ever wondered about the political homage paid to the "biblical family" in recent years.Profiting from recent breakthroughs in the study of Hebrew scriptures, this book, oneof a series produced by the Religion, Culture, and Family Project of theUniversity of Chicago Divinity School, argues that the family in ancientIsrael should be understood as a complicated, multi-generational"household" system organized around a core "covenant"between father and mother, parents and children, households and land, andfamilies and God.The ancient Hebrew family was hardly the "nuclearfamily" of today.Codes of hospitality insured that even outsidersand marginal members of the community were included when necessary. Indeed, the ancient Hebrew family resembled more the "village"concept, not only for raising children, but for building up community. Religious ideas in ancient Israel gave order and significance to thepractical realities of family life, and were closely connected to therealities of household labor, land, wealth, procreation, inheritance, economic profit and loss, sickness, and dependency. This book is the onlyrecent comprehensive review in the English language of the family inancient Israel. It is well worth reading for anyone who wants tounderstand the biblical families of the Old Testament.

Product Description
This pioneering study wrestles with the perpetual problem of chronology inthe Books of Kings. Starting from the conservative assumptions that the courtsof Israel and Judah maintained regnal records, and that these for the mostpart accurately reflect regnal length, the author arrives at a new andpersuasive dating for the reigns and their synchronisms. In addition, his chronological scheme includes all points of contact betweenIsrael and Judah and external powers, especially Assyria. The result is one ofthe most responsible and yet most critical chronologies proposed to date, andwill be the standard chronological reference for the next decade, if notlonger. ... Read more

Product Description

In this clearly written and tightly argued analysis of the various Israeli court systems, Martin Edelman probes a fundamental issue: whether those courts protect human rights while fostering the development of a common, inclusive national culture.

Edelman's work is based on the assumption that courts are important agencies of government and that, like other governmental institutions in a democracy, courts have an interactive relationship with a society's political culture.

Courts, Politics, and Culture in Israel is a major contribution to the study of comparative constitutionalism and judicial politics.

Product Description
This book explains the American commitment to Israel within a framework of political culture. Although political culture is not the sole explanatory factor in the development of US policy toward Israel, it has played a key role in serving to shape and define the American approach to foreign affairs, thus contributing to decisions and operations that cannot easily be explained solely in geopolitical, economic or military terms. ... Product Description
In its early years, Israel's dominant ideology led to public provision of health care for all Jewish citizens-regardless of their age, income, or ability to pay. However, the system has shifted in recent decades, becoming increasingly privatized and market-based. In a familiar paradox, the wealthy, the young, and the healthy have relatively easy access to health care, and the poor, the old, and the very sick confront increasing obstacles to medical treatment.

In Circles of Exclusion, Dani Filc, both a physician and a human rights activist, forcefully argues that in present-day Israel, equal access to health care is constantly and systematically thwarted by a regime that does not extend an equal level of commitment to the well-being of all residents of Israel, whether Jewish, Israeli Palestinians, migrant workers, or Palestinians in the Occupied Territories.

Filc explores how Israel's adoption of a neoliberal model has pushed the system in a direction that gives priority to the strongest and richest individuals and groups over the needs of society as a whole, and to profit and competition over care. Filc pays special attention to the repercussions of policies that define citizenship in a way that has serious consequences for the health of groups of Palestinians who are Israeli citizens-particularly the Bedouins in the unrecognized villages-and to the ways in which this structure of citizenship affects the health of migrant workers.

The health care situation is even more dire in the Occupied Territories, where the Occupation, especially in the last two decades, has negatively affected access to medical care and the health of Palestinians. Filc concludes his book with a discussion of how human rights, public health, and economic imperatives can be combined to produce a truly equal health care system that provides high-quality services to all Israelis. ... At first blush one might think that a book on Israeli health care would only interest a narrow range of specialists. Not so Circles of Exclusion.Filc understands that we can't comprehend a complex political, social, cultural, and economic system such as health care without examining its historical development. He therefore embeds the story of Israeli health care in a broader historical narrative of Palestine and the state of Israel that stretches from the Ottoman period to the present day.

The result is a unique lesson for anyone interested in health care politics and what the future may hold for their own country, large or small. That's because Israel has gone well down the road toward dismantling a health care system founded on social justice and the needs of patients, replacing its original precepts with neo-liberal emphases of privatization and markets.Filc's book is a potent warning for 1) Europeans who believe that simply more "competition" will somehow rescue their systems from insolvency; and 2) Americans who think that if only we had "freer markets," we could solve the US health care crisis.
