This is an excellent book....easy to read....wonderfully written.I had just gotten back from a trip to Israel and purchased this book upon my return.This book makes the land of Israel come alive for the person who has had the privilege of traveling to this amazing area and would be a true source of help to someone just wanting to know more about the land.I feel truly blessed that Mr. Beck has used the gifts that God has given him to write such a helpful, fun, interesting, hard to put down book. ... Wonderful resource
In this wonderful well written book the author expertly describes the historical, architectural and spatial development of Jerusalem from 1800-1948.The emphasis here is on geography, space and buildings, rather than culture or society.This book covers in great detail with well placed pictures, maps and period drawings and sketches, including blueprints, the development of the city.Jerusalem in 1800 was a sparsely populated place with a walled old city that was over-crowded, polluted and disease ridden.However by mid century Jewish investment, led by Montefiore, led to the creation of religious and then secular neighborhoods outside the city.During the late 1800s and early 1900s Christian Arabs began to move into the new upper class neighborhoods of Talbieh and El Qatamon.
This well written book described this period, including the outlying neighborhoods such as Lifta, Abu Ghosh, Deir Yassin and Ein Karem.It covers religious endowments and secular and commercial building.An excellent resource for anyone studying the period, very fair and enlightening.

This study examines the influence of Israel's land and planning policies in the Galilee region on the political geography of Arab-Jewish relations. The first part develops a theoretical framework delineating three areas of "ethnic contrasts" as key determinants of political instability: competition over land control, socioeconomic gaps and power disparities. The second part provides a detailed historical account of Israel's policies between 1975 and 1988. It shows that these policies intensified competition over land control, slightly widened socioeconomic gaps and maintained pre-existing power diparities between Arabs and Jews. Subsequently, most indicators of political instability also intensified. The continuation of Israel's policies in the region is therefore likely to undermine the country's long term political stability. The authors have ceated an alphabetical survey of the prominent archeological, cultural, and religious sites throughout Israel, the West Bank and Jordan.The authors are also meticulous to differentiate between Hebrew, Roman, Herodian, Muslim, Crusader, and Ottoman architectural influence.The exterior photos are most often elevated, if not aerial views which provide a rich perspective--a God's eye view to be sure.The quality rivals National Geographic.Interior sketches and photos of churches and mosques complement chapters on Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jerusalem, etc.The text is informative and primarily historical in nature (as compared to a travel/tourist guide which might focus more on lodging, restaurants, transportation, shopping, business hours, admission fees, street maps, etc.)The text also summarizes current scholarly views based on the archeological record.But extensive color photos, each one carefully located and described, dominate the book. ... Nazareth, the largest Arab city in Israel, is a surprising example of ethnic harmony in a region dominated by conflict. A recent trend toward integration of its historical Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Muslim quarters however, has disrupted the harmony. In Beyond the Basilica: Christians and Muslims in Nazareth, Chad F. Emmett provides penetrating analysis of the complex relationship between the structure of Nazareth's quarters and the relations between its ethnic communities.

Emmett describes both the positive and negative effects of Nazareth's residential patterns. He shows that the addition of new and ethnically mixed quarters has promoted mixed schools, joint holiday celebrations, a common political culture, and social networks that cross ethnic boundaries. But he also finds that tensions exist among Christian groups and between Muslims and Christians in regard to intersectarian marriages, religious conversion, attempts to establish a joint Christian cemetery, and the emergence of a local Islamic party.

Extensive interviews with leaders of religious groups, political parties, and residents reveal the way in which members of each ethnic community perceive one another. A survey of 300 families gives a wealth of details about the make-up of Nazareth's population, including residential histories, religion, level of religious conviction, friendship and shopping patterns, and much more. Fourteen maps trace changes in the distribution of religious groups and political affiliation in Nazareth from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Unexpectedly Interesting
Beyond the Basilica; Christians and Muslims in Nazareth is an interesting and very unique book. It is a history of Nazareth and its inhabitants, primary Christians and Muslims. This book examines the relationship between these to communities, from the rise of Islam to modern times. I know that might sound like a total bore, with lots of statistics, population studies, elections, religious conflict, and history of less-than-interesting periods. Yes, it does include these things, but Chad manages to keep it interesting, with lots of interviews and personal stories from current residents. What I was most interested in was the earlier history, and this book has lots of good information (up until its publication in1995) on the historical churches and archeological sites in Nazareth. One thing that disturbed me the most was the intra-Christian fighting that continues, often over minor issues, while the unified Muslims are becoming a majority and a threat to traditions and holy sites held by Christians for centuries. In what were once integrated communities with shared cultures, tensions between the two religious groups are growing. Ironically, it is the Jewish Israelis that often have to defuse the tensions when they get out of hand. ... Read more
