5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent descriptive guide to the geography of Israel
This work is an outstanding geographic guide to the land of Israel. It is written by the outstanding experts of the subjectat that time. It also gives a history of the study in this area, and points out pioneering researchers such as the founder of Israeli meteorological studies , the late Dov Ashbel. It does a particularly excellent job of characterizing the different regions of Israel, the great variety of geological forms and climates in such a small area.

Description:
This article contributes to a re-evaluation of the role of law in historical geography. It focuses on Israeli officials' application of the complex legal process of 'settlement of title' to land in the all-Arab central Galilee during the 1950s and 1960s, which was aimed at transforming Jewish-Arab socio-spatial power relations in the region. Expanding Israeli conceptions of state land and the government's focus on contesting land claims of Arab citizens transformed the process into an overwhelmingly litigatory one, triggering thousands of legal disputes between state agencies and Galilee Arabs. Drawing on Galanter's work on repeat player advantage and Kritzer's work on government litigants, this article characterizes the state as a 'government compound repeat player', enjoying advantages that not only won cases in the Haifa District Court but that also had direct impact on the subsequent geographical transformation of the region. On a more general level, this article argues that law has played a greater role in shaping historical geographies than the literature might suggest and encourages additional work on the subject. ... Excerpt: The Palestinian territories comprise two discontiguous areas: the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The territories were part of the British Mandate for Palestine, formed in 1923. In March 1946, under the Treaty of London, the lands east of the Jordan River became the independent kingdom of Transjordan, which on 25 May 1946, was formally recognized as the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. The Palestinian territories were captured and occupied by Transjordan and by Egypt in the late 1940s, and captured and occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. 'Palestinian territories' is one of a number of designations for these areas. In 1980 Israel annexed East Jerusalem from the West Bank, but United Nations Security Council Resolution 478 declared it null and required that it be rescinded, stating that it was a violation of international law. Following the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993, portions of the territories have been governed in varying degrees by the Palestinian Authority. Israel does not consider East Jerusalem nor the former IsraeliJordanian no man's land (the former was annexed in 1980, and the latter was annexed in 1967) to be parts of the West Bank. Israel says that both fall under full Israeli law and jurisdiction as opposed to the approximately 58% of the Israeli-defined West Bank that is ruled by the Israeli Judea and Samaria Civil Administration. This claim has not been recognized by any other country, based on unila...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=96665 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Keepping Israel Safe
This title fills a void in children's literature about Israel. With the interest that Israel's 60th anniversary brings, it will surely garner attention. This short paperback book tells you everything you would want to know about the Israeli military, in kid-friendly language. The author has accomplished this in an original way with the introduction of four teenage friends who meet at the end of camp every year for hamburgers. The four teens are seniors this year and will be going in the military after graduation, so they discuss what branch they want to join. The book proceeds in chapters and covers the history of the IDF and the various branches of service, such as the Air Force, the Navy, the Intelligence Service, and the Army. It also covers Alternative Service (Sherut Leumi). Each of the teens selects a different service, so this gives a personal slant to the branches, and allows us to follow their choices. There are appealing photos that relate to the text both in black and white and color. The book also includes the structure of the Israel Defense Forces and gives the military ranks in both in English and Hebrew. Ages 7-12. Reviewed by Barbara Silverman

4-0 out of 5 stars Stories for Children Magazine 4 Star Review
Accompanied by many fascinating photos from the Israel Defense Forces, Author Barbara Sofer takes us through the basic history of the state of Israel as the reader follows the lives of four teens. As an adult, I found this book fascinating because it gave me a much better understanding of how the state of Israel came into being, and how they operate their military.Surrounded by Arabic nations, and the possibility of the threats they posed, Israel built up its military defenses in order to survive as a nation.

David, Sharona, Dana, and Hezzy are the 4 teens in the story that we follow as they make their military choices for service to Israel, which is a requirement of both young men and women in this tiny democratic mid-eastern country.Immediately upon high school graduation, boys serve for three years, and girls for two.Dana, an émigré from the US, chooses to join the army after giving careful thought to serving in Israel's alternative service (National Service - an alternative service for religious women who did not want to serve in the military but could still serve their country in other capacities such as tutoring children from disadvantaged homes, and caring for ill children in the hospital. Women are able to dress more modestly in National Service than they would be in the military service - so a good alternative for very religious young women). She decides to take a job teaching Judaism to former Soviet soldiers. Hezzy chooses to be an air force pilot, David wants to be in the active Navy, but is injured in an accident before he can do so.He is offered a job in Intelligence, and accepts it. Sharona was a good athlete, so she decided to serve in active combat as a Border Police guard. All four teens are quite pleased with their decisions, after much time and thought was put into all the different options available in today's Israeli Defense Forces. The author mixes her fictional story of the four teens and their choices by adding factual text about the different service branches, interspersed with many actual photos from the IDF and other sources. A fascinating book for any pre-teen and teen to read when contemplating their own future and a great way for all of us to acquaint ourselves with the history of Israel.

Product Description
For Oren Yiftachel, the notion of ethnocracy suggests a political regime that facilitates the expansion and control of a dominant ethnicity in contested lands. It is neither democratic nor authoritarian, with rights and capabilities depending primarily on ethnic origin and geographic location. In Ethnocracy: Land and Identity Politics in Israel/Palestine, Yiftachel presents a new critical theory and comparative framework to account for the political geography of ethnocratic societies.

The primary manifestation of ethnocracy in Israel/Palestine has been a concerted state strategy of "Judaization." Yiftachel's book argues that ethnic relations--both between Jews and Palestinians, and among ethno-classes within each nation--have been shaped by the diverse aspects of the Judaization project and by resistance to that dynamic. Special place is devoted to the analysis of ethnically mixed cities and to the impact of Jewish immigration and settlement on collective identities.

Tracing the dynamics of territorial and ethnic conflicts between Jews and Palestinians, Yiftachel examines the consequences of settlement, land, development, and planning policies. He assesses Israel's recent partial liberalization and the emergence of what he deems a "creeping apartheid" whereby increasingly impregnable ethnic, geographic, and economic barriers develop between groups vying for recognition, power, and resources. The book ends with an exploration of future scenarios, including the introduction of new agendas such as binationalism and multiculturalism. ... Read more

Excerpt: Dr. Nahman Avigad (Hebrew: , born 1905; died 1992), born in Zawalow, Galicia (then Austria, now in Poland), was an Israeli archaeologist. Avigad studied architecture in what is now the town of Brno, Czech Republic. Avigad emigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1926. He married Shulamit (née Levin) Avigad in 1928. He worked in the excavations of the Beth Alpha synagogue and the Hamat Gader synagogue. Avigad earned his PhD in 1952, with a dissertation was on the tombs of the Kidron Valley, Jerusalem. He taught at Hebrew University from 1949 and until his retirement in 1974. He directed the dig at Beit She'arim beginning in 1953. Avigad also worked on the excavation of the Masada mountaintop complex built by Herod the Great. He was involved in the exploration of caves in the Judean desert, and published one of the Dead Sea scrolls. According to Bible Scholar Frank Moore Cross, Avigad was Israels most distinguished epigraphist in his generation, and one of the great figures in the history of Hebrew and Jewish epigraphy. In 1969 Avigad was invited to undertake the excavation of the Jewish Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem, devastated by the 1948 war and its aftermath. Among the finds were what was believed to be the earliest depiction of the menorah that once burned in the Second Temple, cut into a wall plastered 2,200 years ago, and the remnants of a building destroyed when Titus, the future Roman Emperor, repressed a series of Jewish revolts against Roman rule. This was the first physical or archaeological evidence for the destruction describ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=9490015 ... Read more
