If you don't want to ask your mom... ask the book
The thing that caught my eye with this book was the cover, but when I started skimming the pages I realized that there was a lot of information I wanted to know but didn,t want to aske my mom.I bought the book and read the whole thing all the way through.This book was very informative and I still go back to it when I need a guide to get through one of lifes many obsticles.I recommend it!!!!

Improving your business productivity...
In the business arena, it seems like there's never a balance between demands and time availability.You could often work 20 hours a day and still not keep up on all the work requirements that flow your way.Harold C. This book does an excellent job with practicality.It's written in such a way that you're constantly focused on how these tips would work and how they would apply to you.The chapters start and end with a vignette that puts the specific time-sink in a real-life scenario.A fictitious character is struggling to keep up with work but is failing due to one of the time factors, such as getting bombarded, or "piranha-ed", as soon as they walk into the office.After discussing the causes and solutions to the problem, the story is continued from the point of view of having implemented the technique.The chapter summary and "Timeless Advice" sections that wrap up the chapter help to solidify the learning and also makes for a nice reference point if you go back later for a refresher.

While this book is targeted more for business leaders, it's quite possible to use a number of the techniques at whatever level you're at.To Do lists are always valuable, as is reserving the first 20 and last 10 minutes of the day for planning and reflection.I personally have to work on not accepting the baton, which means taking back work when someone else decides they can't finish it or they don't have the solution.It's far too easy for me to fall into the "I'll just do it myself as it's faster" routine instead of working with the person to coach them on how they can do it themselves.If I got that technique down, I'd definitely reclaim a few hours in my work week for other projects.

So long as you remember that It's About Time is focused on business-related time management, it's a good resource for sorting out the time sinks that kill off your productivity in the workplace.

The book has 12 chapters. I found them easy to read, and their titles clearly explain what is covered in the book. I recommend you examine the Search Inside feature Amazon provides for this book so you can get a better picture of what is actually included in the book by examining the Table of Contents.

Time is always being spent. You can spend it wisely. You can be frugal with it. Or you can simply waste it by throwing it away. The bottom line is that time is valuable and you should try to maximize the benefits you can get from it.

The author in this book seems to group the use of time as being either productive or unproductive. I got the feeling that he thinks that time used unproductively is wasted and that treating it as such should be avoided. And he has written this book to help people who have 5 hours a week of unproductive time to capture it and make it productive. However, what is so magical about 5 hours? I would have liked the book better if the author had just told us he was trying to help the reader convert unproductive time into productive time assuming the reader needs to be more productive.

About a month ago I was informed that my oldest nephew was not a particularly good manager of his time. He was a sophmore in high school and was forgetting to do homework that had to be handed in. He also was missing deadlines on a few other things, too. This was not because he was lazy; it was because he was incredibly busy and had too much on his plate so to speak. I did a search on Amazon to find a good book on time management, schedule planning, deadlines, and appointments. As an attorney a long time ago I had learned how to keep and maintain a schedule planner (calendar system) and tickler file to stay on top of my appointments and deadlines. I know how the system should work, but I was not able to find a good book regarding the subject on Amazon that I could buy and give to my nephew. However, I was able to find a few articles pursuant to a Google search.

When I picked up the instant book I was hoping it would be the book I had looked for a month ago. While I found the instant book to be really good at touching on the ins, outs, and how-to's with regard to time management, I found it lacking in specific guidance as to how to keep and maintain a Personal Information Management system (PIM). And since in my humble opinion the adoption of a PIM system (whether in paper format, digital format offline, or digital format online) is critical to good time management, I found this book to not be worthy of a 5-star rating. It would have gotten 5 stars if it had felt a little more like a book instead of a mere outline of material AND gone into some depth discussing PIM systems. All in all, I found the book to be just a little too generic on the topic of time management. Most of what was included herein was simply common sense. 4 stars!

It's about time for IT'S ABOUT TIME!
Harold C Lloyd probably has the best organized life and home and office around - at least to read his book leads us to think that he is in control of every one of those little distractions that consume our energies and make us feel at the end of a work day that we didn't even get started on the pile of things we had in mind to accomplish.Lloyd isn't suggesting that we become rigid in our place of work (or even in our home life for that matter).He is merely using commonsense suggestions of how we can start a day in an unobstructed-meditational-plan-it-all-out manner, then progress to the point of even rearranging the furniture in our workplace to avoid distractions from the casual passersby. Here is a wealth of ideas such as how to program your voicemail to give you better control over the time you spend chatting over frivolous matters instead of gaining on the time clock.He also suggests such simple methods of time conservation as devoting only a specific time to read email, masterminding meetings that are brief and to the point, dealing with personnel both in managing the manner in which they interact with you and in the manner in which they are hired.He is a great proponent of 'To Do' lists - not just making them, but checking them routinely and updating them so that you manage them and not they, you.

Profound information here?No, but instead this is a manual for capturing what we all crave - spare time for our own, unencumbered by outside distractions.It CAN be done - and Harold Lloyd is a very helpful guide in showing just how simple that goal can become.Grady Harp, June 10

Best-selling author describes how to find 5 extra hours each week.
The promise of this book as stated by the author is to ". . . help you find where you are mismanaging your time and what you can do to take back those five hours."

Most people waste an inordinate amount of time. I see it in my business daily. A project that could be done in one week easily, takes some people a month. I have a colleague who took two months to finish a project I would have completed in one or two weeks at the most. A book like this is much needed and welcome.

In my own business life I found that most of the time spent talking with people who called me on the phone asking about my copywriting service were just tire kickers and a big waste of time. Many even pumped me for free information. People are big time-wasters if they're allowed to be.

I finally decided to take no unsolicited calls from anyone and to return only a select few. Everything is done by email now. That means I can spend my time on paying clients and projects that matter.

This is the type of thing the author understands and wants the reader to address. He addresses the telephone issue too as I'll discuss below.

He also makes an interesting observation with which I totally agree. "Love what you're doing at least 70 percent of the time you're doing it, or make a career change." How true! It's so sad to see people who have grown old and spent a lifetime in a job they hated. What a waste of life!

Lloyd says, "First, these people probably had no personal plan for their lives that allowed for the accomplishment of a dream or desire. Second, their time management skills were never developed enough to help them find the time to do what they wanted."

Among the "time tools" he recommends are Post-It Notes. He says, "Love 'em! Use them to remind yourself about deadlines. Place on door handles, mirrors, clock faces, edge of computer screens --- everywhere you look when you want a reminder."

Another great tip he shares is to "set a schedule that forces you to declare part of your weekends or evenings work-free." This really works for me. I work Monday thru Wednesday. I use Thursday and Friday for reading or running around or whatever I want.And the weekends are just a free-for-all.

Other things you'll read about are taking more time for yourself, setting priorities, getting yourself out from under far stress and learning to say "no" when you really don't want to do something. So many people say "yes" just because it makes them feel important and needed or perhaps because they have a need to have a full to-do list and appointment book. Not a good idea.

Lloyd advises the reader to use a timer. I love this idea. I learned it from the famous copywriter, Eugene Schwartz. Gene would set his ever-present timer to 33 minutes and 33 seconds (a Zen thing) before every project or speech. That's exactly how long he'd take. Then, he stopped. I do the exact same thing and I love it. It causes you to concentrate only on the task at hand.

As I said earlier, I a judicious phone manager. Lloyd gives a sample message to use. I don't like it but it may work for you.

"I'm not available to take your call right now. Please leave your name and your message. Would you please also indicate the urgency of your call? If it is urgent, say Priority one; if it is a call I can return tomorrow, use Priority Two; if it is a call I can return within three to five days, that would be a Priority Three. For example, 'Herb, this is Carlos. Please call me at ###-####, Priority Two." Thank you."

That's way too much to expect the poor caller to remember. People pay so little attention to anything and they're certainly not remember the priorities.

The message I use is one that works fine for me.

"Hi. This is Susanna Hutcheson. At the tone, leave your name, number and the purpose of your call. Also, give your email address. Phone calls from non-clients are seldom returned. So, it's best to drop me an email or ask for a quote on my website. Thank you."

You get the idea.

I found the book well organized and full of great ideas for time management. Certainly time management is critical to us all. We only have a limited number of hours in the day and we want to spend it doing what we must but also what we enjoy and what brings us happiness.

If time is a problem for you or if you're not getting as much done as you'd like, you should pick up a copy of this book. You'll find you can get some extra hours in your life --- hours to do what you enjoy.

Great book!
Have always been a big Brubeck fan but knew little about his life. It was great to learn so much about this very accomplished Musician! I find I have even more respect for him than I did, as I only knew him through his music and that's quite alot!

Great read and well written. The author obviously had a great depth of knowledge on the subject. Wish there had been more behind the scenes type stories on the "classic" quartet but it was very good none the less.

The book is a great looking- glass into what must have been a magical time for small group Jazz/American music and into one of the most progressive quartets of the age.
