National Tree The Jamaican National Flag which came into use on August 6, 1962, Jamaica's independence Day, was designed by a bipartisan committee of the Jamaica House of Representatives. The Flag has a diagonal cross or saltire with four triangles in juxtaposition. The diagonal cross is in gold and one-sixth of the length of the fly of the flag; the top and bottom triangles are in green; and the hoist and fly triangles are in black.The exact shade of green used in the flag is Emerald T8 17, British Admiralty Bunting Pattern. The flag follows the "Admiralty Pattern and the proportion is 2 x 1. "Hardships there are but the land is green and the sun shineth" is the symbolism of the Flag. However, to be simply practical about it, Jamaica is evidently a beautiful country which has a lot to offer. According to lonelyplanet.com, this attraction to the island began in the mid 20th century: 'Ever since Errol Flynn cavorted here (Jamaica) with his Hollywood pals in the 1930s and '40s, travellers have regarded Jamaica as one of the most alluring of the Caribbean islands. Its beaches, mountains and carnal red sunsets regularly appear in the world's tourist brochures and, unlike other nearby islands, it democratically caters to all comers: you can choose a private villa with your own private beach; laugh your vacation away at a party-hearty resort; throw yourself into the thick of the island's life; or concentrate on experiencing the three Rs: reggae, reefers and rum! Of course, the above quote ignores the fact that Jamaica had long been attractive to thieves, cut-throats and pirates. What it also indicates is that Jamaica has a lot more to offer than mere sea and sand. It has a culture that is worth seeing and experiencing. It is common for three generations to share a home. Many women earn wages, particularly in households where men are absent, and grandmothers normally take charge of preschool children. The main meal is almost always in the evening, because most people do not have time to prepare a midday meal and children normally eat at school. Some families eat together, but television has increasingly replaced conversation at the dinner table. The exception to this rule is Sunday, when tradition dictates that even poor families enjoy a large and sociable brunch or lunch, usually including chicken, fish, yams, fried plantains, and the ubiquitous rice and peas. Today, Jamaica's people blend traditions from African, European, Arabic, East Indian, Chinese, and East Mediterranean descent. The indigenous Arawak never rooted their culture in Jamaica, because they were largely wiped out by disease introduced by Spanish settlers. Britain's 300-year occupation is reflected in both language and customs of Jamaica.Edna Manley, wife of Norman Manley, Jamaica's first prime minister, was instrumental in bringing Jamaican art to the world's attention. From the 1920s until her death in 1987, Manley worked tirelessly to promote Jamaican music, sculpture, dance and other art forms. Jamaican Music on the World Scene It is perhaps reggae that first comes to mind when people think of Jamaica. Reggae, a distinctively syncopated style of Jamaican music, much of it highly political, is a music form that emerged from traditional indigenous Jamaican music with African and Black American roots, and was popularized in the 20th century by Bob Marley and others. It was a pervasive influence on rock music in the 1980s, especially in Britain. For his cultural contributions, Marley received Jamaica's third highest national honor the Order of Merit and was posthumously enshrined in the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the late 1990s.
