Extractions: Transportation is the moving of people and goods from one place to another and connects one place with many others. Location is an important reason why communities begin and grow. There are many forms of transportation students can identify with and each kind has played a major role in the development of communities in New Jersey. The state's location bordering two major cities —New York City and Philadelphia — and two surrounding rivers serving as harbors—the Delaware and the Hudson Rivers — has shaped New Jersey's role in the United States as a "pathway" of goods, such as food or clothing, and people. In this section students will focus on one method of transportation, the automobile, and how people have come to rely on cars every day. Through the examination and comparison of present and past New Jersey road maps students will come to realize how the construction of roads and highways reflected the prominence of cars. OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES Activity 1 - Students will discuss and brainstorm different forms of transportation people use in New Jersey and the United States.

(it would be to the southwest of the battery - there is another, unihabited, island closer to the tip of manhattan named governor's island - it was once were paupers were burried, but is now where you need to go in order to get your car when it is towed by the city of new york) can you see a suspension bridge in the right-hand side of the picture? Stephen: There is no suspension bridge visible. If there was no smoke (the smoke obscures nearly the entire island right down to the water, with the exception of a small section of land which is not built up at the far right) the bridges would be visible in the middle of the picture.

Jurisdiction: New Jersey By Bill McGarigle Special to Government Technology Few areas in the nation have lost more wetlands than the state of New Jersey. The major causes are a growing population, expanding development and, until recently, a lack of effective resource management tools. The problem is compounded by New Jersey's geography. According to the state's Land Use Regulation Program administrator, Ernest Hahn, "If you get any size parcel in New Jersey, you'll probably have some wetlands associated with them - there are no vast areas of the state that do not have wetlands resources, even in the hilly country of North Jersey." The state's first attempt to stem the loss of coastal wetlands was the Wetlands Act of 1970. "They passed that act," explained Hahn, "because we were having wholesale destruction of those areas as a result of houses built out on the marshes. [Developers] would just fill in the marsh and push out a new road. Everybody would get a lagoon and a waterfront lot." The Wetlands Act of 1970 required the state to completely map all coastal wetlands and create maps that could be used as a regulatory tool in screening applications.

And in recent years, we've been hearing more about a Central New Jersey - an area encompassing counties in the state's narrow middle that also has been called the Wealth Belt. New census numbers based on prerecession, pre-Sept. 11 surveys are out and they only go to reinforce the notion that the Garden State is made of more than one crop. The North has the richest counties, the Center has the biggest growth, and the South - well let's just say the South has space and is slowly catching up, especially in the amount of time it takes to drive to work. So what is it that North and Central Jersey have that South Jersey does not?

Extractions: Situated in the mid west of the Island, St Peter is the only parish with two coastlines, one a short stretch at Beaumont on St Aubin's Bay and the other a portion in the middle of St Ouen's Bay. It is divided into five vingtaines; Douet, St Nicholas, Grande Vingtaine, Vingtaine d'Augrez and Coin Varin ( Augeres and Varin were local names). Although it is difficult to confirm, it is believed that the parish of St Peter, along with the other four central parishes of the Island, has existed since about AD475.

The two crossed axes on St Helier's parish crest are a reminder of how the martyr who gave his name to the capital met his violent end, probably at the hands of marauding Vikings. Jersey purportedly had only 30 inhabitants at that time who, as a result of the regular Norse invasions, were naturally terrified of strangers, but who eventually came to respect the devout ascetic who had come to their Island from Limburg.
