Product Description
This remarkable and innovative guide to Japanese economic statistics describes the major statistical series on both the real and the monetary economy of Japan. Issued by government agencies as well as private companies, the statistics provide a complete statistical picture of Japan's economy. This information has never before been available in the English language. The statistics are methodically presented and explained in nontechnical language and hundreds of tables and graphs. Not only do the authors present the results, but they also create a clear and precise account of their meaning and importance. The authors also provide explanations of the interrelationships between the statistics and a description of the role each statistic plays in a macroeconomic context. This fully up-to-date reference will be indispensable for anyone interested in the Japanese economy or comparative economic systems. ... Read more

Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on buckwheat, millet, canary seed, and grain sorghum in Japan face a number of questions.Which countries are supplying buckwheat, millet, canary seed, and grain sorghum to Japan? How important is Japan compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of buckwheat, millet, canary seed, and grain sorghum vary from one country of origin to another in Japan? On the supply side, Japan also exports buckwheat, millet, canary seed, and grain sorghum.Which countries receive the most exports from Japan? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for buckwheat, millet, canary seed, and grain sorghum in Japan. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view.Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact.Icon Group has developed a proprietary methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for buckwheat, millet, canary seed, and grain sorghum for those countries serving Japan via exports, or supplying from Japan via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. ... Product Description

This volume provides the first systematic analysis of the Japanese nonprofit sector ever undertaken. Using a broad range of qualitative and quantitative data, the authors show that Japan has a much larger nonprofit sector than is recognized, even in Japan. Three-quarters of all university students attend nonprofit institutions, significant shares of hospital beds are in nonprofit institutions, and nonprofit agencies are active in the field of social services. Yet in comparative terms the Japanese nonprofit sector lags significantly behind that of other developed economies. One reason for this, the authors argue, is the generally hostile attitude the government has historically taken towards nonprofit organizations in Japan; nonprofit organizations wishing to attain legal status, have to secure the approval of a "competent Ministry," and this is often given begrudgingly or not at all. The nonprofit sector in Japan has only just begun to "flex its muscles" as an independent force in very recent years, and is now on the brink of a new phase in its development.

Product Description
Japanese Multinationals in the Global Economygoes beyond traditional methods of research in international business by providing new simple data comparisons on the global operations of Japanese firms.A key aim of this book is to encourage other researchers to explore a new data source and expand and shape their own studies on multinationals. This book will be a significant addition to the debate on the behavior of multinational firms because it avoids the problems and restrictions involved using national government data and individual case studies. The book presents key information based on the most extensive samples of multinationals at the subsidiary level using both cross sectional data and data over time. The authors provide a direct comparison of US subsidiaries, using the established Harvard Multinational Enterprise database, and Japanese subsidiaries, using the much less well-known Toyo Keizai annual data. Key features include -a summary description of the Toyo Keizai database -comparison of Japanese and US multinationals based on the dates the subsidiaries entered the parent's system, annual sales levels and the equity level of the subsidiary -the data includes employment levels, expatriate management, ownership patterns and joint venture ownership structures -new data on the performance of Japanese subsidiaries is measured using several dimensions and illustrates important recent trends After each data set the authors briefly discuss the information available pointing the way for new research and more in-depth analysis. This book will be a vital source for international business researchers and corporate managers as well as government agencies and international organizations concerned with multinational enterprises, trade theory and business strategy, international economics, organizational behavior and business history. ... Product Description
In Japan, the diagnosis and effects of treatment of cancer patients is tracked and evaluated through a registry of the patients. Rather than a demographic or population-based tracking, the Japanese medical community has developed a number of site-specific cancer registries. The registries are administered by the research group or association of medical specialists for the site-specific area. Their promotion of the registries has resulted in national improvements in the diagnosis, surgical techniques, and treatments for cancer. This monograph provides, from each site-specific registration committee, a description, history, number of patients and their clinical characteristics, survival rates by TNM stage, and their time trends in relation to the development of diagnostic methods and elaboration of new treatment. Through greater knowledge has come greater understanding for the medical community of the current diagnostic and therapeutic results for many Japanese cancer patients. ... Read more

Product Description
In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Japan. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within Japan and the extent to which Japan might be used as a point of distribution within Asia. From an economic perspective, however, Japan does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Japan over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Japan when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Japan used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Japan. Without Japan, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in Japan, Asia, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Asia and Japan. ... Read more

Product Description

The population base in both the United States and Japan is growing older and, as those populations age, they provoke heretofore unexamined economic consequences. This cutting-edge, comparative volume, the third in the joint series offered by the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Japan Center for Economic Research, explores those consequences, drawing specific attention to four key areas: incentives for early retirement; savings, wealth, and asset allocation over the life cycle; health care and health care reform; and population projections.

Given the undeniable global importance of the Japanese and U.S. economies, these innovative essays shed welcome new light on the complex correlations between aging and economic behavior. This insightful work not only deepens our understanding of the Japanese and American economic landscapes but, through careful examination of the comparative social and economic data, clarifies the complex relation between aging societies, public policies, and economic outcomes.

This is accomplished knowing that economic fundamentals (e.g. income) generally vary from one country to another within a given country over time. In this report, I report the allocation for each category for Japan as an area of dominant influence in Asia and, potentially, the world. ... Read more

Product Description
This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for business software across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for business software. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the cities in Japan). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E., for business software in Japan. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided and concentrated across the cities and regional markets of Japan. For each prefecture, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time. In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more
