4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Author Jason Rich offers a functional how-to targeted at job seekers. What it lacks in originality, the book makes up for in thoroughness. Rich provides lists of "action words" for use in resumes and cover letters, a review of likely interview questions, a description of four different resume formats, an exhaustive list of self-inventory questions, and topical advice from employment experts. The writing is uninspired, but novice job hunters probably aren't looking for breathless prose. We [...] recommend this solid book to rookies just striking out into the job market, or for older job seekers who are just plain striking out.

2-0 out of 5 stars What's geeky about this?
I'm not excited by this book at all.It is a very generic job hunt guide with dated advice regarding the yellow pages for job hunts, how best to snail mail a resume, and how to behave properly if your interview occurs during a meal.

Nothing makes it specific to 'geeks' (which I read as tech-savvy folk who may be talented but introverted). How can you call this a geek's guide if there isn't even one web address in the entire book? One website is mentioned, but a URL is not included. Not useful.

If you've never read any other book about job hunting, you will learn something here.If not, skip this one. Sorry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Job Market Bible
Kathryn Hume's book is incredible--combining sage wisdom with very practical advice about things I wouldn't have even thought to ask. In addition to looking at the big picture questions such as how to pitch one's cover letter and CV to different kinds of schools, she also looks at very mundane things, such as the fact that one is more likely to get sick during interview-season, and so one needs to prepare in advance to avoid that. She covers a huge amount of information in a short and highly readable book. I could not have successfully survived the job market and gained a tenure track job in literature without this book. I am very grateful to it and have loaned it to friends who also found it useful.

In addition to Hume's book that addresses the particular concerns of humanities, I also bought The Academic Job Search Handbook, which is more broad. That's also a pretty good book, but I hardly used it, because Hume's book was more relevant to my needs and covered everything. So, if you are choosing among several job search guides and aren't sure which to buy, I'd strongly recommend Hume's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wise Mentor
Surviving the Academic Job Hunt is the best purchase I have made as I am preparing for the academic job search. It does not only provide information which one will need when one is about to go on the job market but it also gives one great advice on how to maneuver successfully through the politics within one's department. The book provided an answer to me of how to do this with dignity and without sabotaging myself.I wish someone pointed me to this book when I was starting grad school. One of the most important features of the book is the solid list of questions which one might get asked at an interview as well as possible questions one might want to ask.

I hope there's a new edition of the book to reflect the current job market, and by saying this I do not mean to imply that the book is not useful as is.It's a very realistic guide for those interested in academic jobs but without an ivy league school next to their name.It also focuses on the humanities, so you do not get the irrelevant and unrealistic advice applicable for those in the sciences.

It's a book which I can't recommend enough. If I could, I would give it six stars.I think it's unfair to give only five since I have to give one star to products I hate, and this book is one's greatest help during the job hunt ordeal. As I read the book, I felt that I had a trusted and wise mentor next to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource

This book was my guide throughout my academic job search, and it was enormously helpful every step of the way. I cannot recommend it enough for anyone looking to make sense of this at times labyrinthine and confusing process. Having received several job offers, I can safely say that Hume's exhaustive advice is on point and really helps one to mentally prepare for interview and campus visit situations. The book also provides practical, no-nonsense tips for the myriad requisite documents one is obliged to prepare by different institutions, as well as plans for how to organize one's time and graduate school career in such a way as to come off in the best possible light. Most helpful of all, however, might be the final chapter, which discusses what comes next-- how to move forward toward tenure and, in essence, become a professional while on the job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in its class by far
The other reviewers here have covered the details of this book and its assets well, so I will merely emphasize how much I value this book.I will never be without my copy so long as I am in academe.Every single student I advise, every new up-and-coming PhD candidate who asks me about the market, and even colleagues already in a job who are looking to move, I tell them they have to read this book.My experience with Hume's advice not only significantly improved my appeal to the academic job market but prepared me for the entire experience of interviewing, negotiating starting salary and package, and even the first few years of my time as an assistant professor. When I first went out on the market I read a handful of books that claimed to be guides for academic job seekers. How lucky I was that a pre-publication copy of many of these chapters ended up in my hands (and I had the added benefit of participating in some of Dr. Hume's workshops on job seeking).None of the other books had even half the insight, value, and forthrightness of Hume's perspicacious little tome. This book costs $25, but I am betting it has netted me thousands of dollars and invaluable freedoms and opportunities that would not have been available without its sage advice. If you are even remotely serious about your job search, there is no option -- you must read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Would-be Professors
This is the must-buy book for would be professors in the humanities. It walks graduate students through the application process, preparing them for the rigors of the job hunt. Humane, but without sugar-coating, the author offers measured, well-informed advice on applications, interviews, dress, questions to ask, contract negotiations, what to expect as a new professor, and much more. The text also provides an array of sample materials, interview questions, etc, In short, it is the perfect companion on what can be a daunting, and sometimes lonely journey. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I'm going to enjoy this book very much. It's well written and it's easy to read.
I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emily Post Meets the 21st Century...and that's a good thing!
When I think of Emily Post I automatically think stuffy, prim, and proper. Not so this book by her great-great-granddaughter, Lizzie. An updated and fairly hip book of advice for the newly independent, itapproaches issues in a straightforward manner, using a variety of formats with tips, Q&A, and checklists addressing roommate dilemmas, and classroom, dining, and office etiquette. As further evidence that this is not your grandmother's Emily Post, subjects such as one-night stands, "things that go bump in the night," (Use your imagination.) and couch-crashers are discussed. The book will also advise you on the appropriate clothing for a variety of occasions, when it's probably not okay to swear, and a great shrimp primavera recipe for your next party.

This book is not a perfect fit for each and every grown kid who moves out of the house, and certainly not for most 18-year-olds. It is well-suited for a slightly older, more sophisticated crowd of say, 20-somethings, who are more likely to WANT to make shrimp primavera and really care about wearing the right clothes for each occasion.Personally, I am thrilled with this book and plan on having a couple of copies on hand for college graduations and 21st birthday gifts. 50 Ways to Leave Your Mother

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really for the High School Crowd
I bought this book because I was interested in a hipster take on manners for the post grad crowd. I was a little disapponted at the lack of wit in the book, but it contains info that all people need to know...and a great majority never learn.
It's a perfect go-to-guide for the serially clueless graduate in your life

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent handbook on life
Everyone I know would be able to take something away from this extremely well-written book. Too many young adults these days seem to have somehow missed out on learning how to conduct themselves in a way that does not hassle the people they interact with on a daily basis. It is refreshing to see a young author with such a thorough understanding of these issues.

The book itself is entertaining and an excellent read regardless of how it is read (I enjoyed picking it up and reading chapters at random). I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the newly independant person (and some not-so-new)...
Although the adolescent years are often considered to be the hardest in terms of life transition, moving from teen-living-at-home to out-on-your-own has to rank right up there. For those who are struggling on how life's supposed to happen in the real world, there's How Do You Work This Life Thing?: Advice for the Newly Independent on Roommates, Jobs, Sex, and Everything That Counts by Lizzie Post.I'm sure my 18 and 20 year olds could learn much from this book, and I know a number of others (unfortunately much older) who would also benefit from a refresher course or two...

Index

It's tempting to think that moving out and getting a roommate will be cool, easy, and nonstop fun.The reality of it is that within the first week, your cool roommate will start to transform into the "roommate from hell" before your very eyes.Don't laugh...They're thinking the same thing about you.Your assumption that everyone thinks and acts like you do is incorrect, and clashes are inevitable.Lizzie Post has taken many of the common points of contention in a roommate situation and gives great advice on how to avoid the conflict before it happens.Hashing out issues like the kitchen (clean vs. messy, what food is communal, etc.), the bathroom (clean vs. messy), and the living room (same issues!) before they become flashpoints is a great way to enjoy your new-found freedom and still continue to like the person you're living with.

Parts 2 and 3 are extremely useful, in that she covers the face and persona that you show to the public. There's great advice on how dating should work, the unwritten rules of dining, and what to do (and not do!) with your cell phone. This is the part of the book that I'd like to see be required reading for a number of people who shouldn't need to be reminded of stuff like this.Like the cell phone chapter...ESPECIALLY the cell phone chapter...
