Excerpt: The Palestinian territories comprise two discontiguous areas: the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The territories were part of the British Mandate for Palestine, formed in 1923. In March 1946, under the Treaty of London, the lands east of the Jordan River became the independent kingdom of Transjordan, which on 25 May 1946, was formally recognized as the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. The Palestinian territories were captured and occupied by Transjordan and by Egypt in the late 1940s, and captured and occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. 'Palestinian territories' is one of a number of designations for these areas. In 1980 Israel annexed East Jerusalem from the West Bank, but United Nations Security Council Resolution 478 declared it null and required that it be rescinded, stating that it was a violation of international law. Following the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993, portions of the territories have been governed in varying degrees by the Palestinian Authority. Israel does not consider East Jerusalem nor the former IsraeliJordanian no man's land (the former was annexed in 1980, and the latter was annexed in 1967) to be parts of the West Bank. Israel says that both fall under full Israeli law and jurisdiction as opposed to the approximately 58% of the Israeli-defined West Bank that is ruled by the Israeli Judea and Samaria Civil Administration. 3-0 out of 5 stars Biblical Archeology along Jordan River pre-1945
Nelson Glueck was (c. 1945) director, American School of Oriental Research, Jerusalem; and Professor of Bible and Biblical Archaeology at Hebrew Union Colege, Cincinnati, Ohio. 1945 edition, by Lakeside Press -- R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., USA, 268 pgs. This book is a history of Biblical events along the Jordan River in Palestine. It is primarily an account of the author's research into the archeological history of the tribes of the Bible, with many photograph-illustrations: Prehistoric cave in Galilee, Herod the Great's port of Caesarea, cliff at Banias, Pan niche in cliff at Banias, 'Ain Leddan,by Tell el-Qadi, eet-Tannur, Nahr Bareighit, Tell Abil (Abel-Huleh), main thoroughfare of Roman Gerasa, temple of Zeus, Artemis temple, Yarmuk River, Mosaid floor of Byzantine synagogue at Jerash/Gerasa & at Tell es-Sultan, Capernaum synagogue ruins,Chorzain synagogue ruins, artificial lake of Palestine Electric Corp., the jungle of the Jordan, cultivable section of the Zor of the Jordan, Allenby Bridge, 'AinIfdan spring, Arnon river; Kerak crusader castle, Roman theater at Amman, Qal'at er-Rabad castle; Roman dam in Wadi Dhobati, Umm el-Jemal reservoir and & Beit Ras, Qeseir 'Amra hunting lodge, Amman Umaiyad castle, Khirbet Mefjer statutes, Khirbet Umm Hamad Sherqi, the Jabbok river, Tell Damieh (Adamah), Ezion-gerber: Elath; Tell Deir'alla (Succoth), Tell el-Ekhsas, Wadi Kufrinji, Tell el-Meqbereh and Tell Abu Kharaz, Tell el-Husn (Scythopolis); Monastery of Lady Mary at Beth-shan, Khirbet Tanur head of Zeus?, and a few other sites.I'm sure that Prof. Glueck is a good archeologist, but his book has a "Bible thumpers" literary style:this artifact must be from a certain Biblical tribe because the Bible said some tribe had been there.(The paper quality of this book is from the 1940s World War II paper-shortage; it has that old paper-quality, not the good stuff from the 1960s; certainly not acid-free.The quality of the photos are not great, barely good.) ... Geography/Anthropology

A fascinating portrait of the history and landscape of this remote settlement.

The village of Djarkhan is in the heart of Russia's Sakha Republic, on the Central Yakut Plain. The world around Djarkhan, with its extreme subarctic climate and intractable permafrost, seems an unlikely place to look for a rich, historic, and exotic efflorescence of human life, and yet this is precisely what the authors found. Their book is a remarkable account of how the people of Djarkhan have created their own distinctive place through their unique relationship with a severe and demanding land.

This book traces the way of life of the village's Turkic inhabitants, the Yakuts, from their arrival in the 1600s through czarist times and the Soviet era to the present day. As a native of the village, geographer Bella Bychkova Jordan enjoyed unparalleled access to its people and their stories, myths, humor, problems, and folklore. Viewed through the prism of cultural geography, this material forms the basis of a remarkable portrait of a people wresting a living from the land in one of the coldest and most isolated spots on Earth.

Bella Bychkova Jordan is a doctoral candidate and Terry G. Jordan-Bychkov is Walter Prescott Webb Professor of History and Ideas, both in the Department of Geography at the University of Texas.

Published in collaboration with the Center for American Places.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feeling at home in Siberia
I recently finished reading this book, and I extend my thanks to the authors for writing a readable and enjoyable account of such a far away place.(Sadly, Prof. Jordan-Bychkov passed away in 2003.)I studied Russian 1990-1994, and this book elicited the happier memories of my studies and 1993 summer in St. Petersburg. This is a solid academic work which exhibits a sincere warmth for the people and place. My only complaint was that it left me wishing for color photos of the taiga and Djarkhan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Personal Geography
Yesterday, 26 April, I wrote a review for you of this book under the above title, & I'm wondering if it is possible to add 2 words to the final sentence of that review. The final sentence said, "It breathes with life."What I'd like for it to say is, "It breathes with life and love."I hope it's possible to make this addition. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Personal Geography
First & most basically, this is a geography & history text, complete with dates, stats, maps, data, 329 footnotes & a 253-item biblio. But it is unlike any such book I've read.As the title says, it describes life on the land of central Siberia by focussing on the tiny village Djarkhan, representative of 250 such hamlets in the huge Republic of Sakha.Djarkhan is in "polar land," less than 300 miles south of the Arctic Circle (1200 miles north of Chicago!), with 8 or 9 months of what I can only call winter. How the people have managed to survive there since 1600, from pre-Czarist to post-Communist eras, is an enthralling, almost unbelievable, story. But the sub-text of the book tells another tale, of 3 Djarkhan natives -- a grandfather who was honored in distant Moscow as the Sakhala record-holder for hay cutting, a mother who was "the most famous plastic oral surgeon in Sakha," & a daughter who is the co-author of this book with her husband, a distinguished American geographer. Thus its 112 pages of text are enriched with 62 personal photographs, reminiscences by villagers & on-the-spot observations. It breathes with life.

5-0 out of 5 stars An academic book in disguise
I was lucky enough to have a chance to assist the authors in the manuscript typing for this book, getting to read it as I typed. Without any education in geography, this book was easy to understand, but educational at the same time. I have never enjoyed an academic book more than I enjoyed this one. The people and places in the book come to life as stories are told as only a native villager could tell them. A must read for anyone interested in cultural studies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned a lot about Middle East history of conflicts
Very good written book, just enough for the beginner to learn about the complexity of Jordan and the neighboring countries in Middle East conflicts.
I thought that I can learn about politics of Middle East from the news, but news only talk about current event in a very superficial way. This book brought a right perspective into Israel-Arab conflict. It does focus on Jordan, but Jordan history is so inter-related to other states, that I learned about lots of different aspects of the Middle East history. Yes, the author sometimes express his opinion which brings extra flavor, but usually relly on the facts only.

I read this book in two afternoons, it also contains series of wonderful photos from Jordan from the beginning of XX century.

All the books from the series "Creation of the Modern Middle East" has the interesting essay about the Arab/Muslim culture in the introduction.

These books for young readers are good for everybody - young and old.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the few books for kids adopted at older ages
There is such a need for books that are applicable to families that adopt children beyond infancy. It is a shame that this is out of print. I was able to find it at the library, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Questions are okay
This story is perfect for children who were adopted, particularly those adopted at an older age. The simple text is accompanied by photographs of the co-author, Jenny Jordan-Wong, who was adopted in the early 1990s at the age of eight.

Her life with her Mom and Dad, an inter-racial couple, is normal and loving in every way. Jenny plays and runs and reads like other kids. (She especially likes Nany Drew.) She takes piano lessons and plays Hula Hoop.

But she is different from other friends who want to know what it was like to be adopted. She explains that her biological parents had a lot of problems and could not take care of her. So when she was three, she moved to a foster family, a temporary family who "take care of you until you are adopted." Of course, Jenny knows that not everyone gets adopted.

Jenny has pictures of her second foster Mom and Dad, who took her in when she was 6. She still visits them, as she does the social workers who helped find her parents.

"It was scary meeting my new mom and dad," she writes. But after visiting on several weekends with her family, "We knew we wanted to be a family. They wanted to adopt me and I wanted to live with them. We would become a forever family."

The story also includes photos of the court session which made the adoption final and of Jenny's extended family--aunts, uncles, cousins, and her friends.

This book helps kids realize that others have been through the same thing, that new things take some getting used to, and that questions are okay. Alyssa A. Lappen

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for latency ageadopted children
As an adoptions professional I am continually searching for books that reflect the experience of children who are adopted after they have been removed from birth parents. Many of these children are between the ages ofsix and ten when adopted.Kids I have shared this book with have notwanted to give it back.It is a very useful tool in helping childrenunderstand adoption. Jennifer's journey from instability to having aforever family is not sugar coated but presents what is true for themajority of adopted children. I am very disappointed that it is out ofprint.I think this is a great loss for our kids. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Winston's Hiccup or Churchill's Hiccup is the huge zigzag in Jordan's eastern border with Saudi Arabia, supposedly because Winston Churchill drew the boundary of Transjordan after a generous and lengthy lunch.Churchill, then British Colonial Secretary, boasted that he had "created Transjordan with the stroke of a pen on a Sunday afternoon in Cairo." A story subsequently arose that, after enjoying an overly liquid lunch that day, he had hiccuped while attempting to draw the border and had refused to allow it to be corrected. Thus the zigzag, with the Saudi town of Kaf near its apex has been written into history as "Winston's hiccup". ... Read more
