Extractions: Enroll in National Board prepration courses Kansas National Board Certified Teachers National Teacher Certification National Board Certification is a way for the teaching profession to recognize highly accomplished teaching practice. A certificate awarded by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) attests that a teacher has been judged by his or her peers as one who meets high and rigorous professional standards. He or she has demonstrated the ability, in a variety of settings, to make sound professional judgments about students' best interests and to act effectively on those judgments. The Great Plains Center's program, which first began during National Board field testing in 1992-95, continues to grow each year, and to provide improved and expanded assistance, resources, and leadership to recruit and support Kansas teachers through National Board Certification professional development. In 1998, the Kansas Legislature appropriated $40,000 annually to help maintain the center's program of professional support. In addition, for 2001-02, the center has been given $90,000 for expansion of program activities and updating of program materials.

Emporia State University has offered a program of professional support for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification since 1993. The program now operates from the Great Plains Center for National Teacher Certification in ESUs Jones Institute for Educational Excellence. State Farm contributed $5,000 to support the orientation academy last weekend. ESUs National Board Certification candidate support program has a national reputation, in part because of its long-standing goal and achievements in providing equitable access to teachers throughout the state as they pursue the NBPTS advanced national board certification, said Tes Mehring, dean of the ESU Teachers College. A NBPTS certificate shows that a teacher has been met high and rigorous professional standards through peer review. It is one of the main ways the teaching profession recognizes excellence among its ranks.
