Sexton, Executive Director Prichard Committee launches new consulting unit LEXINGTON, KY The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence has created a new consulting unit to expand the use of its successful parent leadership program beyond Kentucky's borders while supporting the committee's work in the state. Parent Leadership Associates, or PLA, will be a revenue-generating program of the Prichard Committee, which will remain an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of citizens who work to improve education in Kentucky. The new initiative has the financial support of three national foundations - the Ford Foundation, The Annie E. Casey Foundation and The Pew Charitable Trusts - which are awarding the Prichard Committee a total of $2 million over the next three years. Parent Leadership Associates is described as a "mission-based" consulting unit, one that will focus on improving student achievement by increasing the meaningful involvement of parents in public schools. "We've had so much interest from outside Kentucky in our work with parents that we thought this would be a good way to respond," said Robert F. Sexton, executive director of the Prichard Committee. "We also see it as a way to generate income to finance our efforts and to reduce our reliance on philanthropic sources."

We remind everyone that schools are historically the very places where communities assemble in times of crisis, so our nations children are gathered where it is likely safest. However, Jon Akers, Center for School Safety Director, is aware that many are concerned. Schools cannot ignore the potential for tragedy and the impact of current heightened alert situations, says Akers.
