Extractions: Robert F. Sexton, Executive Director Prichard Committee launches new consulting unit LEXINGTON, KY The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence has created a new consulting unit to expand the use of its successful parent leadership program beyond Kentucky's borders while supporting the committee's work in the state. Parent Leadership Associates, or PLA, will be a revenue-generating program of the Prichard Committee, which will remain an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of citizens who work to improve education in Kentucky. The new initiative has the financial support of three national foundations - the Ford Foundation, The Annie E. Casey Foundation and The Pew Charitable Trusts - which are awarding the Prichard Committee a total of $2 million over the next three years. Parent Leadership Associates is described as a "mission-based" consulting unit, one that will focus on improving student achievement by increasing the meaningful involvement of parents in public schools. "We've had so much interest from outside Kentucky in our work with parents that we thought this would be a good way to respond," said Robert F. Sexton, executive director of the Prichard Committee. "We also see it as a way to generate income to finance our efforts and to reduce our reliance on philanthropic sources."

Extractions: FAX (502) 564-8389 Goals of the Healthy Start In Child Care Program Implemented in July 2000, Healthy Start in Childcare is a Kids NOW Initiative to provide consultation on health, safety and nutrition to childcare providers. Trained Healthy Start Childcare Consultants from the local health departments participate in joint activities with the resource and referral agencies in their area to ensure collaboration and coordination regarding health, safety and nutrition issues impacting the quality of childcare The population to be impacted by Healthy Start in Child Care includes the children and their families receiving out-of-home childcare. During the first five years, children of full time working parents may spend more time in out-of-home childcare facilities, than the total hours spent in school from kindergarten to high school. This makes it critical to utilize this "window of opportunity" to provide accurate health, safety and nutrition information to parents and childcare providers.

Extractions: SREB Jennifer Burke August 1998 Technology Standards for Teachers To be effective, technology certification for educators needs to be part of formal education policy and a required element of school and teacher evaluations. . . . Educators need a system of technology training and certification. Council on Basic Education, 1998. The rapid increase in the availability of computers and other technology in schools represents a significant investment, and state leaders are concerned about results. To what extent does technology use result in improved student learning? Research has found that teacher skill in using technology is a major factor in improving student learning with technology. Teachers must know not only how to use technology but also when and why to use it. Teacher technology standards identify essential skills teachers need for effective use of computers and other electronic equipment in schools today. State teacher licensure and certification has not kept pace with rapid changes in technology and teaching. Linking technology skills assessments to licensing requirements helps ensure that teachers have the skills to support and guide students and to increase student learning using technology. Twelve SREB states have established teacher technology standards or guidelines that address several levels of competency:

Extractions: Preparing for, Responding to and Recovering from Attacks On February 7, 2003, President Bush heightened national security by raising the status to Orange Alert. As our nation grapples with the potential of another terrorist attack, and faces an ongoing war on terrorism, the faculty, staff and students in Kentucky schools will certainly be impacted, directly or indirectly. The goal of KCSS is to help you deal with the fears, concerns and realities these events create. We can help each other deal with the impact of this time, and pray. Teachers and students gather in classrooms throughout the Commonwealth as they do each school day, preparing Kentuckys students for the future. We encourage them to continue the process of education as normally as possible knowing that our nations leaders are in control and have the support of most of the world. We remind everyone that schools are historically the very places where communities assemble in times of crisis, so our nations children are gathered where it is likely safest. However, Jon Akers, Center for School Safety Director, is aware that many are concerned. Schools cannot ignore the potential for tragedy and the impact of current heightened alert situations, says Akers. We continue to encourage schools to update their Crisis Response Plans which have already been set in place to address any threats or potential threats made locally, says Akers.
