These persons, perhaps the earliest humans on earth, most likely also inhabited S Kenya. In the Kenya highlands, the existence of farming and domestic herds can be dated to c.1000 B.C. Trade between the Kenya coast and Arabia was brisk by A.D. 100. Arabs settled on the coast during medieval times, and they soon established several autonomous city-states (including Mombasa, Malindi, and Pate). Farmers and herders traveled S from Ethiopia and settled in Kenya in c.2000 B.C. There is also evidence that Bantu-speaking people and Nilotic speakers from the S Sudan settled in Kenya between 500 B.C. and A.D. The Portuguese first visited the Kenya coast in 1498, and by the end of the 16th cent. they controlled much of it, including Mombasa. However, in 1729, the Portuguese were permanently expelled from Mombasa and were replaced as the leading power on the coast by two Arab dynasties: the Busaidi dynasty, based first at Masqat (in Oman) and from 1832 on Zanzibar, and the Mazrui dynasty, based at Mombasa. The Busaidi wrested Mombasa from the Mazrui in 1837. From the early 19th cent. there was long-distance caravan trading between Mombasa and Lake Victoria. In 1903, the first settlers of European descent established themselves as large-scale farmers in the highlands by taking land from the Kikuyu, Maasai, and others. At the same time, Indian merchants moved inland from the coast. In 1920, the territory was renamed and its administration changed; the interior became Kenya Colony and a coastal strip (10 mi/16 km wide) was constituted the Protectorate of Kenya. From the 1920s to the 40s, European settlers controlled the government and owned extensive farmlands; Indians maintained small trade establishments and were lower-level government employees; and Africans grew cash crops such as coffee and cotton on a small scale, were subsistence farmers, or were laborers in the towns (especially Nairobi).

Artificial borders drawn with ruler by the colonial powers ignored tribal demarcations, drawing a map of Africa that is a constant menace for the nations’ cohesion. It is possible that someday the different ethnic groups learn to coexist in peace, but by then the price of death and blood will have been too high. Kenya hardly maintains unity, probably thanks to the fact that the tribal mosaic is formed by large depressed patches, KANU supporters, separated by fertile and densely populated opponent regions. But the violence goes on, and in the most affected communities the Kikuyu oathing against rival tribes has reappeared. Over the last years, the Isiolo area, south of Samburu, has been one of the main hotspots of ethnic riots. Immigration of Somalis invading the Boran lands has triggered real battles that extend to other tribes in the area. Mau-Mau freedom fighters are so poor in the black man’s country as their parents were under the Colonial boot.

In February 1990, the Luo Robert Ouko, Minister of Foreign Affairs, was murdered in his farm near Kisumu. Ouko was a keen defender of Moi and maintained excellent relationships with the British and North American governments, to such an extent that in 1988 he had received support from the UK to occupy the vice-presidence. His name was frequently mentioned in the discussions about succession to presidence. Contrary to Moi, Ouko was popular in the foreign media, pleasant and amicable, and moderate in his declarations. Within the Cabinet, he stood out for his crusade against corruption. The murder, the fourth of a political leader in modern Kenyan history and the first during Moi’s mandate, was followed by one week of street riots, especially in Kisumu. Same that in Kariuki’s case, fifteen years earlier, it was commonly accepted that the attack had been authored by government agents that went too far in their functions. At the end of 1991, John Troon, former British policeman hired by Moi to clarify Ouko’s death, revealed that the main suspicions involved the president’s most close counselor, the Minister of Energy Nicholas Biwott, together with his security chief Hezekiah Oyugi. Both were dismissed and arrested, but they would be soon released on absence of proofs.

In time, however, the need to bring in an orderly system for conducting the game became essential; Asian cricket was controlled by the Asian Sports Association (founded in 1912), whilst the European cricket was controlled by Kenya Kongonis Cricket Club (1927). Although the two organisations controlled and organised the game for their respective communities extremely well, they also worked in mutual accord, as a result of which an annual Asian vs. Europeans three day fixture was born in 1933. This fixture remained the most important annual event in the Kenya cricket season for 32 years. However, early in 1950 it was felt the administration and organisation of the game at the top level had to be streamlined by evolving a single body out of the two organisations - yet at the same time allowing them to remain separate entities. Thus was born in 1953 the Kenya Cricket Association - the first inter-racial organisation of its type in Kenya. This arrangement continued until 1960, when the two organisations ceased to have representation on the national body and Kenya Cricket Association management came to rest in the hands of its own members, irrespective of colour. Two annual fixtures dominated the early years of Kenya Cricket: Officials v Settlers annual match played by Europeans from 1910 to 1957 (Settlers winning 18, Officials 14, and 5 drawn) and the Asian - European match played during the New Year period from 1933 to 1966 (Asians 13, Europeans 11 and 6 drawn).

    Extractions: Early in the 16th century, the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama stopped at Mombasa on his way to India. The Portuguese built Fort Jesus in Mombasa in 1593; this soon became the headquarters of Portuguese officials and the main port of call for Portuguese vessels, but the fort was captured by Omani Arabs in 1698. In the 18th century, the Arabs made several attempts to penetrate the interior of the region in efforts to take over control of the slave trade then dominated by the Kamba. These attempts were repelled; only in the beginning of the 19th century were the Arabs able to take over the internal slave trade. One consequence of the Arab incursion was the consolidation of the politics of the Luo and the Luhya. When Europeans began to penetrate the area in the 19th century, the coastal areas were ruled by the Sultan of Zanzibar.[2] Opposition to Moi's one-party rule grew during 1990.[4] In July, 1990, Charles Rubia, Matiba and Raila Odinga, son of the former Vice President, were arrested and detained without trial when their public "pro-democracy" rallies were banned. Their arrest was protested at home and abroad, and riots spread in the central province. Though a KANU Delegates' Conference in December voted to keep the one-party system, a government-sponsored national dialogue was set in motion with the goal of facilitating broader democracy in spite of one-party rule. Despite these mollifying gestures, public discontent with the government and KANU increased. In August, 1990, Oginga Odinga and six prominent opposition leaders, formed the Forum for Restoration of Democracy (FORD) with extensive multi-ethnic support. The new movement immediately gained the public's support and its popularity soared.

Political freedom gradually increased until, in 1963, Kenyatta led the renamed Kenya African National Union (KANU) to victory in the elections of May 1963. In December that year, Kenya finally gained independence. Kenyatta became president of the new republic in 1964 and remained in post until his death in 1978. The written records focus on the coastal region primarily because of its rich history of trade with the southern Arab nations. The Kenyan interior, however, remained mostly undocumented prior to the 19th century. The arrival of the Europeans brought an end to the mystery of this diverse region of the world. Archeology reveals the secrets of the development of civilization in the Kenyan heartland. The Rift Valley, which runs through the center of Kenya, has long been regarded as the cradle of civilization. Charles Darwin perpetuated this theory in his work On The Origin of Species . Darwin's theory that humans and the higher apes probably had a common ancestor led to the conclusion that humankind originated where the apes were found: East Africa. Early archeological discoveries at Lake Turkana in Kenya, at the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, and along the Kagera River in Uganda support Darwin's guesswork with hard evidence. Ancient hominoid, or human-like skulls dating back 21/2 million years were discovered at these sites. Although archeologists believe there were originally at least three different species of hominid roaming the plains of Kenya, evidence suggests only one species evolved and developed into Homo sapiens. The Rift Valley region, therefore, earns the distinction in most archeological circles as the area where man first stood upright and began his life-long quest for food and water.

KENYATTA Taa ya Kenya or Swahili for the 'Light of Kenya' was the man who brought the light of independence to Kenya. Indeed, he was a beacon, a rallying point for suffering Kenyans to fight for their rights, justice and freedom. His brilliance gave strength and aspiration to people beyond the boundaries of Kenya, indeed beyond the shores of Africa. Just as one light shines in total darkness and provides a raliying point, so did Ken-yatta become the focus of the freedom fight for Kenya over half a century to dispell the darkness and injustice of colonialism. Before matter can become light, it has to suffer the rigours of heat. So did Kenyatta suffer the rigorous of imprisonment to bring independence to Kenya. As the founding father of Kenya, and its undisputed leader, he came to be known as Mzee, Swahili for a respected eider. No chronology can adequately reflect the many sided achievements of Mzee Kenyatta. His life is the life of the free Kenya nation chronicled here.
