Outstanding book about Fort Thomas Highlands football!
This book, published in 2008 as part of Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America/Images of Sports" series, does an outstanding job of detailing the storied history and tradition of Fort Thomas (Kentucky) Highlands football, the nation's fifth winningest prep football program.The book is divided into three broad sections highlighting: the 2007 state championship-winning squad and season, the greatest Highlands football players all-time, and the history of the Highlands Bluebirds football program.There are numerous photographs printed in this book, going back all the way to the creation of the football program in 1915.It is an excellent book for anyone interested in high school football.

Where our American values came from
I was fortunate enought to have read this book just before reading the new John Adams book.It is a fascinating insight into the thinking and values systems that shaped our country in its early days.I don't think I ever really understood how the religious values of the early New Englanders led to many of the principles our country was built on.To those who have trouble understanding why the early leaders of our country were so compelled to sacrifice so much to create a new and independent country here in America, this is the answer.Why John and Abigail Adams were willing to sacrifice almost their entire married life and the rearing of their children for these principles, one can only understand upon reading this book.These were not men set upon a search for glory or power, but men with a vision that they believed in with all their souls.The unifying beliefs of the people led them to accomplish what the great minds of Europe felt was totally irrational and impossible. Moving the dialogue beyond $$$$
In my community every conversation about school improvement ends up being about money and there it stops. Mobilizing Citizens is filled with nuggets that can be used to redirect the dialogue away from money and on to figuring out what the problems are and coming up with solutions. Once you do that, then appropriating more money begins to look more like an investment and less like attempting to fill a black hole.
The book not only includes Sexton's philosophy of using civic engagement to help set a course for school reform, but also provides a case study with a history of Kentucky's Pritchard Committee.

This is one of those books that changed the way I think. I have purchased several copies it for others. Most recently I gave one to a school board member when he asked how our school district was going to find the money to pay for our district improvment plan.

Mobilizing Citizens
Mobilizing Citizens for Better Schools was published this year by Teachers College Press.Its 131 pages, particularly chapters six and seven, offer much practical advice and some theoretical points for citizens, policymakers, and others interested in implementing school reform.The Foreword by former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley introduces Sexton, who formed the Committee on Higher Education in Kentucky's Future, a group of thirty citizens appointed by the Kentucky Council on Higher Education and chaired by attorney Edward F. Prichard.

In 1981, a report from the committee was a catalyst for tougher admissions policies at the universities of Kentucky and Louisville.But a vast majority of its recommendations weren't adopted.So in 1983, the committee decided to turn into a freestanding, independent nonprofit corporation-the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence-and broaden its nonpartisan agenda to include public elementary and secondary education.The Prichard Committee received financial and other start-up support from the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Ashland, Inc., and others.A year later, Prichard, having suffered from poor health for many years, died, but the Committee, invigorated by the life and goals of perhaps Kentucky's most prominent public intellectual, continued on, and with Sexton as Executive Director.

Even before the Kentucky Supreme Court declared Kentucky's school system unconstitutional in 1989, the Prichard Committee had taken notice of the State's dire educational situation.For instance, more adults in Kentucky than in any other state had failed to graduate from high school.The declaration opened the door to the 1990 Kentucky Education Reform Act, which President Bush praised as "`a model school-restructuring plan'."Flavored with oddly relevant Appalachian sayings, Sexton's story of how the Prichard Committee moved the Act into action amid the complexities of politics and communications is an experiential, almost lyrical, yet substantive history of how this unique group of citizens achieved and continues to achieve school reform in Kentucky and elsewhere. ... First and Fabulous!
For her first novel, Wyatt successfully proves herself as an up-and-coming writer of children's novels.It is 1930 during the Great Depression in rural Kentucky, and Artie is tired of being poor, hungry and working in the fields on the family farm.She daydreams of hopping the train to Louisville for a better life than what she has now.She realizes that determination, despite the odds against her, is the ticket to a better life.The characters are well-rounded and the interactions between the family members are realistic.A suspenseful twist keeps the novel from being too predictable.

Main character's determination is sure to please readers
Twelve-year-old Artie Wilson attends a one-room schoolhouse in Buck County, Kentucky during the Great Depression.She longs to attend high school, but is hindered by her father's lack of responsibility, her mother's illness, and her family's poverty.When the teacher in her one-room schoolhouse announces an essay contest on the topic of heritage that offers a $25.00 prize, Artie determines to win the money and use it to pay for her living expenses so she can attend high school.

Rich girl Sarah Jane Bratcher is Artie's chief rival.Sarah Jane has everything Artie does not:a rich family, cars, horses, nice clothes, and a family heritage she claims stretches all the way back to England.

Artie's older brother Ballard announces to the school that one of the Wilson ancestors buried a treasure in the woods, so Artie goes on a treasure hunt.Always practical, Artie digs for roots while in the woods so she can sell them to buy food for the family and save for high school.To her shock, she discovers Sarah Jane digging for treasure in the woods as well.Artie is furious.Why does a rich girl need to steal the poor Wilson family's heritage?

Artie's struggle structures this novel.She cares for her ailing mother and fights for the life of her newborn baby brother.Using whatever spare time she can wrest from her chores, she works on her essay and tries to find meaning in the struggles and failures of her ancestors.And she uncovers the mystery of her arch rival, Sarah Jane.

This first novel is rich in the family history of author Leslie J. Wyatt's own family story.Historical details are woven into the story with a light touch.Readers get a real feel for life in this backwoods community but the details never slow or stop the story.

This is a very satisfying read.I'm looking forward to more books by the author.The ending seemed a bit forced so I'm giving it four stars, but it is well worth reading!

Artie is a warm character who will win your heart with her sheer pluck and determination.The publisher aims this book at readers 11 and older, but younger readers who are interested in history will enjoy reading it for themselves or having it read aloud.Teachers will find it useful for showing rural aspects of the Depression years - parts of chapter 3 (plowing) or chapter 5 (driving to the 'May meeting' could be read aloud as stand-alones to show aspects of rural life.) ...
