5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
This is a classic account of the intersection between media and legislating.Tim Cook takes both a broad look at legislators' media strategies and more closely at some specific cases. This is politicalscience, not political drama, so it will be especially helpful for academicpurposes. However it is also highly interesting and not as dry as somepolitical science. The book's one flaw is that it is aging.Cook'sobservations were made prior to the rise of Newt Gingrich and hismedia-intensive style of governance. There is still a big distinctionbetween a "work horse" and a "show horse" in "Making Laws and Making News."Now that Newt's gone, perhaps equilibrium has been restored and the normsdescribed in this book are coming back into vogue. If not, it is still aninvaluable comparative resource - I'm certainly not aware of any othersource that looks at this particular subject. After all this time "MakingLaws and Making News" is still a headliner. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Ekstrand explores the legal protections for the newsman's scoop, the hot news doctrine. This U.S. Supreme Court doctrine, now more than 80 years old, protects facts for a short period after publication -- in direct opposition to U.S. copyright law, which dedicates facts to the public domain. It remains highly controversial, but extremely valuable – not only to news organizations who seek its protections but now to others who seek to protect facts within highly complex and profitable digital databases. Though imperfect and ill-defined, the hot news doctrine may offer the best measured approach to protections for uncopyrighted works delivered by new technologies. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A rehash of his other works
If this is the first book you read by him you might find it beneficial. However, if you have read other books by him, you will find the contents to be a rehash of his other books, without the passion and imagination that is found in those books. For most of the chapters, he says what his theme for the chapter is going to be then footnotes another one of his books. This footnote shows that the ideas are found in another book by him.

The one new element in this book is about sermon preparation. This gave a way for a minister to prepare a sermon. ... Read more

Product Description
A systematic analysis of how race and ethnicity are represented in the news, this book is a sea change in British news media coverage, drawing on the first substantial empirical analysis of news content in over a decade. Ranging across subjects such as migration, asylum-seekers, and crime, as well as stories that expose racism and advocate for racial justice, it provides an accessible introduction to the conceptual tools available for the analysis of race and racism in the media. It concludes by offering an assessment of the role of positive action strategies in journalism, together with analysis of their impact on patterns of representation and institutional racism in news organizations.
