4-0 out of 5 stars Great help.
I had to purchase this book for a doc level class. The class was cancelled but I read it anyhow. It helps newbies to figure out the process for writing lit reviews, in plain language.

4-0 out of 5 stars BB
This is a book that can help navigate the ins and outs of a literature review. There is a well-organized plan that is easy to follow - not to say that the overall task is easy but it takes a lot of unnessary work out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for graduate students beginning work on their thesis or dissertation...
This book is a much-needed life raft for graduate students lost amid the sea of literature on his/her topic. Straightforward, logical, and concise, it's an easy-to-use "calm-down pill" for those working through (and freaking-out over) the literature review stage of their thesis or dissertation.

Ok, gently rub your sweaty palms together, take a deep breath, and open this book and read and/or skim-it from cover to cover; (it's only 154 pages). Then, take a legal pad to take notes and and begin using the book as a workbook to work through your own topic. Start with the Introduction -- read this section again very carefully, it's the template for the whole process.

Then, when you're ready to begin, say to yourself five-times, "I can do this," and take another deep breath. You're about to embark on a most interesting journey; when you arrive, you'll know more about your topic than you ever imagined!

Now, begin working your topic through the whole step-by-step process as outlined by each chapter in the book:

Step 1: Select your topic (if you haven't already) -- follow Machi and McEvoy's guidelines as to how to specify a research interest.

Step 2: Search the literature, following their suggestions.

Step 3: Develop the argument-- build your case and evaluate the various parts of your argument.

Step 4: Survey the literature -- assemble your collected data, synthesize it and look for patterns.

Step 5: Critique the literature -- look for logical interpretations of evidence to produce propositions that signal a specific conclusion.

Step 6: Write your review -- write it to understand, that is, to develop and understand your topic and to be understood as well. If necessary, redraft the content; you want to make sure your work accurately and adequately communicates the ideas to your readers.

The author's closing words are excellent advice: "The act of writing is not necessarily a joy, reading a well-written piece that you have worked through carefully is a joy. To have written is. For that reason, Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero. Seize the day, and put no trust in the morrow! Get on with the writing, and tenaciously follow it wherever it takes you. Craft it well. Experience the joy of completing a good work, to understand and be understood."

Highly recommended for college and university library collections and individuals writing a thesis or dissertation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied!
Thank you for the quick turnaround.I appreciate it as I needed it for a class this semester, and the class had already started. The book was in great shape.

Thank you again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful guide, but beware of bias
Galvan's book is well-structured and easy to read. The organization of the book--using guidelines--makes it easy to follow. However, I would be cautious to restrict myself only to the guidelines recommended as they are not comprehensive. For example, the chapter on how to review qualitative research lacks other guidelines for establishing the credibility of a piece of research. Another point to note is that there are different styles of literature based on one's epistemological beliefs and the purpose of the review, hence the guidelines recommended as well as samples included may obscure other ways of organizing literature review. Overall, a useful book to start one off a literature review, but I would supplement this book with others to obtain a more balanced point-of-view.

4-0 out of 5 stars Step by step instruction
Easy to read and understand. With exercises at the end of each chapter. Helps with synthesizing your research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, well-organized, succinct
As part of my educational requirements, I was required to write a literature review. While I understood what that meant, the nuts and bolts of doing so was overwhelming to me. Thankfully, I found this title on Amazon. I found this book to be incredibly useful in writing my literature review. What seemed to be the most important factor was that this book lays out a step-by-step plan in writing the review, and what exactly must be done. Additionally, the book de-mystifies the idiosyncrasies of writing style when writing one of these. I firmly think that if I had not found this title, I would have had a much more difficult time writing my review. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
Useful guide for writing literature reviews and making literature maps.It also has information on dissertations and writing a research proposal.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book!
A brilliant book written in such a wonderful, transparent and understandable style. A real gem that is best in its class. Excellent reference when judging graduate and post-graduate thesis works. Shows that this is one of the hearts in research process and sadly, today, present less and less in proper form, content and execution! Recommended warmly! PS With all due respect to those that have written negative reviews - seems they have reviews the wrong book or simply have no clue whatsoever about doing research in social sciences.

5-0 out of 5 stars See the answer in the book: what is the purpose of literature review
I did a research work and the most difficult part was the literature review. This book makes clear why to do do the literature review, the particular difficulties in the social sciences and how to proceed step-by-step to complete the work. I do recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars not for the beginners
I bought this book because it was in the medical school bookshop, and I was looking for something about literature review. However, this book is written for people in the social sciences. It has a limited value for someone in clinical research.
There are however some good things, it opens the mind to a different aspect in writing reviews. I am sure I have gained some knowledge from it but it was time consuming. It is well written and has examples.
It will not tremendously help people in clinical research.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good guide on how to analyze ideas and synthesize new ones
Hart's material will benefit anyone who needs to develop and demonstrate their expertise on a topic. He describes how the review contributes to the defense of a research topic and its findings, at the master's and doctoral levels. He presents examples of what thesis and dissertation boards look for in research proposals and papers.

The book describes techniques to extract clues about theories and methods a researcher used. Hart provides excellent guidance on how to analyze the literature on a topic, develop a map of ideas, and synthesize a new contribution.

Anyone who wants to develop their skills as a researcher, or student, should definitely purchase this book. I also shared many of this book's insights with my friends, who are not researchers.

Although I strongly recommend the book, I only rate it 3 stars. The book is unorganized, and the writing is poor.

In an example from Chapter 4, Hart presents a table of 19 common fallacies. The first column presents the type of fallacy (in no logical or methodical order). He titles the second column "What it is and how to avoid it" but only the first entry presents any "how to avoid it" data. The remaining 18 entries have no advice on avoidance.

I also felt some diagrams present no useful information; and his prose rambles and repeats itself. In short, Hart gives us dynamite information, but it is frustrating to sort through its sloppy presentation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lit Review Book
Thanks for the book although I was very surprised at the time it took to get it from Delaware as I am in Maryland.
The book was in very good condition and well-packaged.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely does the trick
I am writing a doctoral dissertation in the fine arts, and I found this book exceedingly helpful. I wasn't sure initially from reviews of this books and similar books which to choose, but I think this one is the right choice. It's helpful for various levels of study, it's clear and "step" driven (rather than abstract), and it provides a ton of specific examples. I learned a LOT of new stuff reading it, and I came away with a much more rigorous lit review than before. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward and practical
I read both Ridley's book and Chris Hart's book, "Doing a Literature Review: Releasing the Social Science Research Imagination." Ridley's book is very readable. It is basic and practical for students at the masters degree level but still valuable at the doctorate level. In contrast, Hart's book is more advanced and more theoretical. It is probably suited best for doctorate students. Some of the discussions in Ridley's book are obvious but nonetheless valuable when under the pressure of performing a literature review. Perhaps, one of the most valuable parts is the practical aspects suggested in this book to manage the process of doing a literature review such as controlling database searches, interconnecting ideas from multiple journal articles, and so forth. If you order both Ridley and Hart texts, and have not recently read another text about doing literature reviews, I suggest you start with Ridley. Doctorate students probably want to read Hart after Ridley. Masters students could probably get by with only Ridley.

My only criticism is that the author's writing style tends to be too wordy and sometimes is not as clear as it could be. However, neither of these are fatal.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXACTLY what I needed
I had been working on my darn lit review for a few months, spinning my wheels and not knowing exactly what to write. This book takes you from the beginning and the title says it best "step-by-step". The first chapter talks about what is a lit review and many different examples of published lit reviews from dissertations. Then it goes into the types and you can figure out which lit review is best for you, or a combination of approaches. It tells you how to take good notes while you're studying so that you know exactly what to put in the review and as a bonus for me, it shows you how to incorporate EndNote in your search. Then it explains how to structure the review, the difference between critical reading and critical writing, etc etc etc. This author has found the perfect middle ground between sounding too simple and too complex. If I had this book months ago, my dissertation would probably be complete by now.I also bought Chris Hart's book "Doing a Literature Review" but this one is much better.Very easy to read but packed with extremely helpful information.Get this if you've never done a lit review before and need guidance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Really great!
This book, at first, didn't feel like it was helping me.

But after taking numerous practice tests, I figured out that it did.

Today I found out that I got a 5 ON MY LIT EXAM :D

They give you a ton of poem names that it is strongly advised for you to look at over the summer. But if not, its okay. Look at some of them.

Don't just read their tips, DO THEM.

And do all the practice questions.

This book was very helpful and optimistic at a time when I was pessimistic.

Also, the examples in this book were much harder than the actual AP Exam. So if you think this book is a little hard, then you'll be fine on the ap exam! :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but not necessary
I bought this for my son who browsed it only briefly before passing the test with 5 (highest possible). The practice tests are helpful, but a good AP class will prepare your student adequately. The exam is designed to assess knowledge and understanding of the rich meaning of limited body of high school literature. That understanding is best gained by reading the original works and practicing the art of critical thinking and writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best test prep review series
My daughter used an earlier version of this book to study and pass the English Lit. & Comp. test in 8th grade! Having now studied for many other tests using a variety of expensive books, she's learned to start with Princeton Review, as their books are consistently accurate and much more helpful than any other publisher's study guides.

5-0 out of 5 stars princeton review is a light of hope (metaphor alert!)
This review book was short and sweet, and pretty interesting too. It gave me all the info i needed to prepare. In the meantime, there were frequent drills and stuff that used really great literature, such as excerpts from moby dick, or a poem by emily dickinson. also, there are tons of reminders of vocab throughout such as what I did in the title for this review, so it really sticks. It's clear that it was written by someone who actually loves literature, because they reference awesome books throughout. for a test prep book, it's a good read. ... Read more

Product Description
Although there is extensive research on the psychosocial factors that influence the etiology, progression, and effective treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD), these findings are seldom applied in clinical situations. There are several possible reasons for this, including the questionable quality of some of the research, and a lack of productive dialog between psychologists and physicians. This book aims to correct that situation. The chapters in this volume are based on a systematic meta-analysis of the international literature by 40 German scientists who convened to evaluate the research and discarded all but the highest quality data on psychological aspects of CHD.The result is a collection of chapters that synthesize the most significant findings and indicate productive avenues for intervention and further research. Among the topics covered are: chronic emotional distress in the workplace; psychodynamic research on the etiology, course, and treatment of CHD; smoking cessation--risk reduction and evaluation of interventions; physical inactivity as a risk factor and treatment models; anxiety and depression in CHD patients; type A behavior and hostility as risk factors; chest pain, angina pectoris, panic disorder, and Syndrome X; psychosocial aspects of heart catheterization, coronary angiography, and coronary angioplasty; and stress management, relaxation, and Ornish groups.Summarizing tables are included in the book and in an accompanying website. This book will be an important reference work for health psychologists who work with CHD patients, researchers, and cardiologists and other medical professionals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Give the Gift of Reading to the Children in Your Life
Searching for a read-aloud book that you might share with your children, you would score a consensus winner with this compendium of rich, highly captivating tales. The two selections from Jack London, "In Yeddo Bay" and "To Repel Boarders" were springboards for our youngsters beyond this book and on to "The Call of The Wild" and "White Fang."Similarly, short fables from Louisa May Alcott and Lewis Carroll opened our ears to continue with more famous, longer works by those authors.Rudyard Kipling's "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" and Mowgli's Brothers", "Tommy and the Meadowmice" by Thornton W. Burgess, "Juggerjook" by L. Frank Baum, creater of Oz, and "The Voyage of the Northern Light" by John Townsend Trowbridge each held my kids' attention as we read them aloud at dinner or at bedtime. The inestimable Mark Twain weighs in with a novella "Tom Sawyer Abroad" that is a perfect followup to a summertime reading of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."There is plenty of selection here for everyone to be happy.Give your kids the gift of colorful, imaginative literature...then read it aloud with them.

If Mr. Buckley's politics or his pomposity is a bother, worry not about it here...he pens a pithy pre-amble, and among the classics also includes a modern-day computer adventure entitled "The Temptation of Wilfred Malachey."Just plain fun!
