Product Description
Basking with Humpbacks offers an exciting, close-up look at some of the most rare marine creatures living in New England waters and examines the complex threats they face. In eleven chapters, each featuring a different animal or plant, McLeish takes readers on an entertaining journey with scientists who study these species. The author follows basking sharks--the second largest fish in the sea--in their hunt for food, helps harbor porpoises escape from fishing nets, snorkels in search of wild bay scallops, and learns how the blood of horseshoe crabs is used in medical research. Along the way he visits the islands where rare seabirds nest, tracks humpback whales on their long migration to the Gulf of Maine, and watches as stranded leatherback turtles are returned to the ocean.

These first-person experiences are coupled with interviews with biologists and other experts who explain in their own words the important role these creatures play in the marine ecosystem and what steps must be taken to protect them. In examining the natural history of selected plants and animals, McLeish also discusses the physics of waves and currents, the geology of the seabed, the chemistry of sea water, and other natural factors that influence the survival of New England marine life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable read.
I would never describe myself as an environmentalist, but nonetheless I thought this was a very enjoyable read. The various chapters explored animals that I normally take for granted. The best part about this book is that it isn't too text bookey nor preachy. He makes a lot of connections that I never thought about and gave me a clearer understanding of how a lot of things in nature are connected.

The stories he tells about his adventures while learning about the various species are as enjoyable as the text describing the species themselves. You can almost feel the excitement the author felt while getting up close and personal with several animals.A few more pictures would have been nice, but hardly necessary give the authors eloquent desciptions.

I highly recommend this book to anybody that likes a good story or wants to learn more about some pretty cool animals. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Propaganda
I thought this was going to be a nice book for my elementary school age son.Instead we were treated to 30 pages of mindless prattle about how humans are decimating marine life.I am concerned about the environment, but this book makes it seem as if humans are plotting, planning, and ready to strike any innocent creature in the wild. There are proper and effective ways to inform small children of the dangers posed to wildlife; this book isn't it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Exceedingly fine content.
This book measures approx. 11in wide by 10in tall (28cm x 26cm). On those pages where there are photographs we find photographs and captions only. On those pages where there is text - there is text only. Having described this book as "exceedingly fine" - which it is, let me start with a criticism of this otherwise excellent work. On each page of text that text measures a very neat 6in x 5in and is placed in the centre of the page. This leaves a very large plain white margin on all sides. In fact the text actually occupies less than one third of the available paper on each page but is arranged so that it does not appear so.

Why is this a criticism? The answer is simple. Marty Snyderman's work is so exceptionally good that I felt cheated in that all that unused page space could have been put to better use by including even more excellent photographs. Sorry Marty, but this is why I deducted one star.

This is a book which will teach all people something about the Shark and most people an awful lot about this splendid creature. It is not a book which allows the author's photographs to dominate the important message contained in the text (we actually go 26 pages without a photograph at one point in the book).

Those photographs that are included are both relevant and first class and just occasionally someone like me will say something like " Hey, I've been there, I did that, why are my photos not as good!"
