Under the first charter of the Massachusetts Colony, only freemen of the Colonyhad the right to vote or hold public office. Such were admitted freemen who could fulfill therequirements of the Freeman's Oath in matters of church membership and state allegiance.Between 1630 and 1691, some 4,500 men were admitted freemen, the ancestors of nearlythree-fourths of the inhabitants of 18th and 19th century New England.

This is a complete list of those freemen, arranged chronologically by the date of the meetings ofthe General or Quarterly Court at which they were admitted, with a citation to the volume andpage number of the Colonial Records in which the data appears. Originally published as "List ofFreemen," it appeared in Vol. III of The New England Historical and Genealogical Register(1849) in four successive numbers. Here they are combined in one volume, with an added index, and a new title. ... Read more

Product Description
This eight-generation genealogy of the Eaton line begins with the immigrant John Eaton and his wife Anne, who first established themselves in the new grant of Salisbury, Massachusetts, in 1640. In 1646, the family left their elder son John with the Salisbury land, and moved to Haverhill, Massachusetts, where their younger son Thomas would receive the new land divisions after the parents' death.

The Rev. William H. Eaton (1818-1896) designed this work as an extension of his fine four-generation treatment of this line, published in the 1880s. He died, however, well before its completion. The old manuscript was found, modernized, and completed by Philip E. Converse. The genealogy is patrilineal, and covers some ninth-generation Eatons who lived the bulk of their lives before 1850. About 5,000 descendants are numbered, and biographical texts of varying length are provided for a majority of the males, along with information about daughter's marriages where available. One long appendix attempts to identify all Eatons (not only from John and Anne) listed in the Federal Censuses from 1790 to 1850 in Northern New England, or the states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The identification rate for Eaton sightings is over 85% in each state, so this appendix will be of interest to descendants of the several other Eaton lineages who came to New England during the Great Migration, some of whom migrated northward from Plymouth and the Boston area. This volume includes 15 sidebars giving some context about the local challenges these Eaton generations encountered in New England, along with 10 maps, and indexes for Eaton names and cognate surnames mentioned. ... Product Description
People know who they are by fixing themselves in place and time. They keep the past in numerous ways—not simply by writing histories but also by telling stories, creating pictures, collecting memorabilia, preserving old homes, and tracing genealogies. As Michael C. Batinski shows in this imaginative study, the pastkeepers of Deerfield, Massachusetts, have long illustrated this human yearning to connect with past and place. For five centuries people in this small New England town have passed stories from one generation to the next, preserved homes, and established one of the nation’s first historical societies and local history museums.

Like many small places in the American landscape, Batinski points out, Deerfield does not fit into the history we learn in textbooks. With the exception of the famous French and Indian raid on the town in 1704, nothing of national significance has happened there. Yet that has not diminished the interest of local inhabitants in establishing and maintaining a vital connection to the past.

Different groups, from Native Pocumtuck to Puritan settlers to the grandchildren of Polish immigrants, have told the Deerfield story in varied and sometimes conflicting ways, each drawing on the past to shape its own sense of collective identity. Together their efforts at pastkeeping reveal how people organize and explain the motion of time, why they feel it important to pass on family stories, and why they keep family heirlooms. In doing so, Batinski argues, they illustrate why the preservation of the past remains a civic concern to us all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars pastkeepers in a small place
This is an excellent book about keeping family heritage alive. I purchased the book not knowing what it was about but because the author is a cousin of my son-in law. It turned out to be compelling reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just another history book
The author has done something quit different in regards to a social history book.He gives a smooth chronological history of Deerfield through stories, but adds in the five why's of why did people pass down, save and write about their history.Deerfield's history was not really that exciting except for a few brief battles during ,King Philips War and Queen Annes War,but that didn't stop the residents from telling and re-telling their stories.I've always been a fan of Deerfield, both visiting and reading about the tales, this book just makes the place a little more special. Again, well worth the price of admission. ... Read more
