This book is incredible.My favorite text in earning my degree thus far.It's laid out properly for a smooth read.The difficulty level is just right so that you aren't overwhelmed, but still cannot afford to slack or you will be missing out.I hope Gere has other texts that are required for future classes.Buy this book and keep it forever! It makes me love engineering even more

I would also like to add that Amazon didn't ship it out until ten days after i placed my order, this resulted in a total of 16 days to get my book.As discussed in other places on the web, this is a result Amazon punishing SSS customers... This book - as well as all the other books on Mechanics of Materials books are twice as expensive here on the .com site compared to the .co.uk-site - WITH THE CURRENT POUND/DOLLAR CONVERSION RATE. This doesn't seem right - considering several publishers are American. I was going to buy the Kindle, but with no access to the .co.uk offering, I'm hope to go for an I-Pad, and not to run into the same problems!

I used this book to take a mechanics of materials course online. The book is well written and easy to understand, a very important attribute since I didn't have a TA or professor to ask questions. There are many well explained examples. The book was also a valuable reference as I continued my engineering studies. It is a book that I will certainly keep for the future.

Most of the material that should be covered in a decent mechanics of materials book is here ... you just have to find it. I found the layout of the book overall rather poor. My professor seems to have come to the same conclusion, as we covered chapter 7 before chapter 2. I think the book also focuses too much on things that have few to no practical applications. If you're a civil engineer, working with beams and cables (5 of 12 chapters have "beam" in the name), this might be useful. But for something with more of a focus on the "materials" aspect (and with a much better layout), Dieter's Mechanical Metallurgy book is far better (and 250 pages shorter). It explains many of the same concepts (as well as many more, such as fracture and strengthening mechanisms) but in a much more concise and understandable way with a emphasis on practical application. ... I could not follow the examples or the chapter explanations.I felt as though Beer and Johnson do not want me to understand the basic concepts.I would spend hours on a few problems and understand about half the material.I would buy LINDEBURG books on fundamentals of engineering.Do not buy this book even if it is assigned to the class.Most of your classmates or going to work together on homework problems and never open the book.

The book seems almost outdated with its long text. Additionally, the practice problems at the end of each chapter can be confusing to take on based on the text. The book requires a good teacher supplement or secondary reference.

HOWEVER:

After a while, you'll get a feel for the way the book operates and you'll finish with a very strong understanding of the book's concepts. You just have to stick with it. The problems at the end of the book, although confusing at first, are great practice to applying the concepts in ways that are not explicitly defined in the chapter texts. I'd recommend this if you're willing to take on the problems and have supplemental material available.

I haven't looked at different options in terms of others with the same content. It is a great resource in understanding fundamental properties of materials. It has lots of examples that help alot when working the problems even though some were a little vague.

...and STILL the answer key is wrong. From the Wikipedia:
"In materials science, the strength of a material refers to the material's ability to withstand an applied stress without failure. Yield strength refers to the point on the engineering stress-strain curve (as opposed to true stress-strain curve) beyond which the material begins deformation that cannot be reversed upon removal of the loading. Ultimate strength refers to the point on the engineering stress-strain curve corresponding to the maximum stress."

The last edition of this book was in 2005. What exactly in the above definition of this subject matter has changed in the last four years? Are our bridges in danger of breaking into pieces and floating into space? Or perhaps the authors have lost a great deal in the stock market and picking the pockets of students who had a great supply of affordable used fourth editions was the solution to the authors' problems?

I used this book in one of its much earlier incarnations (early 90's) for a class, and it was wonderfully written. The prose was clear, the examples to the point, and the illustrations were entirely adequate. However, that was the second or so edition, and the answer key was still wrong back then. I compared the fourth edition of this book to my stepson's fifth edition, and I have to say, what is the point? The sections have been rearranged as have the questions, and it appears some of the errors in previous editions are gone, but new ones have popped up, in some cases to problems that have been in this book for years but have just been put in a different place in the book.

If this book was about the underlying subject of material science aimed at seniors or graduate students, well that subject changes quickly. However, this is a book aimed at college sophomores, and the underlying calculations have not changed. I really loved studying this subject with my second edition. Since that edition was sufficient in 1992, I don't know why three more editions with no more room for improvement with the exception of the answer key which has still not been fixed is necessary for anything but the publisher's bottom line.

I bought this book about 4 months ago for my Statics class at university.The book is well organized and the concepts as well as the examples are easy to follow.I have found it to be a very good reference especially if one is learning some of the concepts mentioned in the book from scratch.There is a sufficient number of examples and problems for one to digest the material.

On the downside, the book does not have the feel of a general purpose reference book and should be regarded as a textbook that is to be followed in order to learn the material inside.

At the bookstore on campus, I bought this book for about 120$. Buying it on Amazon only cost me 40$, which it the best deal I've ever gotten with anything. The book came in really nice condition, basically brand-new and took about 2 weeks to actually arrive at my doorstep. That's a little longer then I would have hoped, but I was still able to sell my bookstore statics book back to the college for a full refund so no real problem. For a third of the price this is a deal that can't be passed up.

I really tried to follow this book, but I had a hard time keeping up with the poorly written text and mediocre examples. There are lots of good, well-written problems, but no way to see them solved out step by step. The back contains some answers to random questions, but I was really expecting more out of it. There is no online site for students to accompany the text, and I really just could not wrap my head around the material as a beginning engineering student. Maybe this text would be preferable for someone with a background in statics or a foundation in the material already. If this is a required text for your class, I might consider some other supplementary material...

I own the original edition of this text.I borrowed a colleague's copy of the second edition to review before buying my own copy.It didn't take me long to decide that the new edition was an essential purchase.This is THE text to buy if you have an interest in composites.

I'm a final-semester senior at the University of Kentucky in Mechanical Engineering and I purchased this book as required reading for my composites class.Here's the thing:the book doesn't really say that much of anything.It spends all of its time stating equations for particular types of composites without specifying why it's doing it or how it got from equation to equation.As a matter of fact, all the chapter-end review questions seem to be are "hey, bet you can't figure out how we got from equation 4.56 to equation 4.57."It makes for somewhat easier homework because it's simple algebra and trig most of the time, but what am I learning, exactly?I usually try to justify books like this as saying, well, at least maybe I'll use it as a reference book in the future...but this book's just horrible.I would recommend you not buy this unless it's required of you for any particular class.Hope this helps.

I find this book to be a very handy reference.Sometimes the equations get very involved, but I do like the way the material is presented.The font is kinda wierd (newest edition), but thats just a subjective thing for me. I also like the design section in the back, and the depth of information on design considerations is neat.Including this book, Swanson's analysis book is another good addition for joggling your memory on composite analysis that you took in grad school. :) ... The negative reviews here are absolutely RIDICULOUS!
They all say that these equations are useless because there are FEM/BEM programs or they are much too difficult.

People, remember this is ADVANCED mechanics of materials.
These equations are very straight forward and are VERY useful if you work for a company that either can't afford a FEM/BEM program, or one whose management is marked by its inefficiency (in my case, Florida Power & Light{my supervisor was an idiot who was not only was less educated, but made up BS about bad methodology when he wasnt even qualified to review my work!})
Anyways, i havent read any other book, but i really have to say that this one is rather nice to have.

I find this book very clear and yet it has several topics. But the site where the solutions are supposed to be are rather confusing, and, for some unknown reason, only teachers have access to the answer key. I think a graduation student should be given the right to check his answer, since he is not a kid who will cheat on his homework or anything.

This book is well written and even manages to maintain an interesting easily read tone.
The only reason I don't give it a 5 is because it is not a stand alone text.Aside from stress/strain theories and general planar analysis (Mohr's circle relations, Hooke's Laws), there is not much review of basic mechanics of materials in this book so it is not going to work for students new to mechanics or who are looking to be able to review basic mechanics before you delve into the meat of advanced mechanics.In fact, I recommend having a basic mechanics book available even for the more advanced students because it is often a necessary reference for many of the problems.
Aside from the above drawback, the new material presented in this book is layed out very well and with just enough detail to keep an engineer happy.What I mean by this is that only enough mathematics is used as is necessary, and the author avoids extensive exhausting proofs wherever he can.

It's a very good book. It's easy to read. It contains a very good explanations about the mechanical behaviour of laminas and laminates.

This book is moderate at best.We used it in a graduate class I am taking as an undergrad.First off, mistakes in the examples and text are not uncommon, and they are very annoying.Second, the examples have too many references to previous examples.It is very annoying to be flipping back 3 chapters to see how an answer was acheived.It is fairly easy to read and the organization is acceptable.

Don't get too excited about the software.It may work well, but there is no written or electronic help/support.

As a practicing engineer, I was refreshed to find such a well-organized, no-fluff reference on laminated composites.The examples are presented in a concise, piecemeal fashion; they are worked start-to-finish, right down to the algebra in many cases.No insulting assumptions about your level of competence are to be found.

The section on design and analysis provides an excellent arrangement of fully-worked engineering problems ranging from filament-wound driveshafts and pressure vessels (to demonstrate mixed-loadcase scenarios) to weight and cost optimization strategies for those interested in comparing composites to isotropic materials like steel and aluminum.

While the book provides an excellent overview of classical laminated plate theory, the one thing I found to be in want of was a proper section on the analysis of plates and shells.For that, the mathematically inclined reader is directed to J.N. Reddy's authoritative treatise on composites titled Mechanics of Laminated Composite Plates and Shells.

That is not to say that Mr. Kaw's title is in any way inferior to Reddy's work.It's rather like comparing apples to oranges; as such, to pit the two works against one another is inappropriate.On the one hand, Kaw provides a very digestable (and long overdue) introduction to composite materials, going into great detail about the terminology, sign conventions, coordinate systems, and mechanical behavior of composites without becoming long-winded or mathematically convoluted.Reddy picks up where Kaw leaves off, introducing variational methods like the Rayleigh-Ritz method, as well as energy principles from the likes of Galerkin.From there, the reader is presented with a rich array of analytical and numerical methods of finding stresses and strains under various types of loading and boundary conditions (which is what the practicing engineer is ultimately looking for).

What Reddy's work does for layerwise and shear-deformable theories of plates and shells, Kaw has done for the classical description of laminated composites.Mechanics of Composite Materials effectively bridges the gap between the outdated books of yesterday, and the technical articles that belong in academic journals.I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a proper introduction to the design and analysis of composites, while still being extremely accessible to the undergraduate.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with other two reviews posted above. Every now and again I do refer to the book, but it's certainly not my favourite. I actually checked to see if there's a new edition out because I thought it would contain a lot of corrections. It does cover many topics, that's why I find it useful, but tread carefully.

I can't believe how badly written this textbook is.I could find countless mistakes riddled throughout the pages including: missing units, wrong units, spelling mistakes, wrong answers given.In addition, the examples do not clearly show how to go about a certain problem, nor do they explain what equations are used.This textbook should have never been published.

This is, without a doubt, the WORST text-book I have ever had in school ever! The examples are poorly written and all the numbers just put in the formulas right away so half of my time goes into finding out what formulasare being used, and the other half goes into reading the bad text. I used the Schaum's series for my engineering cources inthe 1970's, which was extremely helpful in being proficient intheunderstanding and solving problems in statis and strength of materials.I re-purchased the series for my son, who is also majoring in mechanical engineereing.He, too, finds the booklet very useful.

I picked up this book to review statics and mechanics of materials and found it missing much fundamental information on the subject.No mention was made of the concept of Mohr's Circle which is useful in visualizing computation of combined stress states.The solved problems tend to be inadequate in explaining the subject.It was helpful however to have statics and mechanics of materials in a single text (a bargain buy!).Pick another text to either learn or review this subject.
