5-0 out of 5 stars Great Helper
This is the best Spanish-English book I have ever purchased! You must get this book for help and better understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I have found this book very valuable.I am a medical student and my Spanish is intermediate. I can communicate well on a conversational level, but medical terms are a whole different story. This book is excellent. Not only do I use it to look up the proper medical terms, but it also provides examples of more common terms used to describe conditions that are easier for patients to understand. What has been very helpful is a systems-based guide to interview questions. For example it provides you with a list of common questions you would ask a patient who complains of abdominal pain.It also provides a concise review of verb tenses and noun declension. My copy of this book is very well loved. It has seen me through four years of employment in the ER and four years of medical school.Perhaps the mentally challenged reviewers who gave this book poor reviews should learn to read before attempting to learn a different language :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Medical Spanish Dictionary I've Used
In the past 10 years, as a medical interpreter and health care professional, I've tried at least half a dozen medical Spanish dictionaries and this is by far the best, most accurate, and most comprehensive. It has much more of the technical vocabulary one would use in conversation with other health care providers than any other, yet still has the words that patients understand.I highly recommend it, though it may be a bit overwhelming for beginners -- it's not as useful as a "quick reference" for someone who doesn't speak a lot of Spanish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Say what?!
I have to wonder which book the negative reviewers are reviewing.

As to the complaint that there is no pronunciation guide to English or Spanish, for example, the first page of the Spanish side starts with a description of the Spanish alphabet followed by a pronunciation guide to Spanish; corresponding features appear on the very first page of the English side, too.

I am a professional Spanish translator, and I refer to this book for specialized medical terms when I translate. I also make use of the abbreviation conversion table (which, unfortunately, is alphabetized only in English alphabetical order, making it hard to go from a Spanish abbreviation to an English one), and the helpful conversion tables for roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

The main fault with this book is that there could be more. If you are looking for diseases, conditions, or symptoms, or even sample examination interview questions (organized by topic in an appendix), it's great! But if you are looking for the translations for medicines, you can pretty much forget about finding them (acetaminophen? amoxicillin? pseudoephedrine? hardly uncommon medicines, but not in here), but perhaps that is a subject worthy of its own separate volume. Still, if you are wanting help talking to your Spanish-speaking patients about their illnesses, conditions, and treatments--and assuming that you have no reason to use the Spanish words for the medicines anyway--this is an excellent resource to buy, to get familiar with, and to have on hand. I always recommend it to any doctor, nurse, or paramedic who asks me for a good Spanish medical reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Translators
The contents of the dictionary are very inadequate for translators who need to know the English term for the Spanish one and only serves as a mediocre tool for Health Care Professionals who want to learn a few Spanish words here and there. It is not at all comprehensive. I give it one star because the design of the book cover is attractive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for practitioners
As a family nurse practitioner student, this book is very useful to learn medical terminology. The questions are short answers and I especially like the patient education materials, birth control methods, how to breast feed, prescription instructions and there's lots more. It instructs you on how to obtain an informed consent and HIPPA. I love that I can carry it around in my labcoat!

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Spanish
I really like this book. It provides good basic medical terminology in Spanish and English and makes it very easy to follow and understand. After browsing through my copy of this book several of my collegues stated they are going to purchase this book. This book has certainly helped me with being able to speak to my Spanish speaking patients. I have pruchased several different Spanish dictionaries and translation books, but none compare or come close to this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK...I HOPE THEY MAKE AN AUDIO CD!
This small book packs a big punch. There is a wealth of medical spanish terminology well-organized into small related sections that are easy to digest.I carry this book with me and refer to it all day everyday. The ONLY reason why I did not give 5 stars is because there is not an accompanying audio CD.If they ever make one, I will be the first to buy it.Gail L. Bongiovanni did an excellent job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
Aside from the fact that greetings and other common expressions often change quickly, and may therefore be out-of-date, I found this book to be well-organized situationally, and very easy to use.I checked the information given on several points and the book's accuracy was confirmed.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the most useful medical Spanish book ever written.
If you are worried that a Spanish-speaking patient will talk too fast and say too much for you to understand, your worries are over.Medical Spanish by Bongiovanni is designed to elicit yes-no answers or short answers. Otherchapters teach simple commands for conducting exams, instructing therapy orproviding discharge information. It's a gift from heaven. You will developconfidence as you learn Spanish. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My Editing "Bible"
Quick: What does CSOP stand for? You may know if you are a cardiologist, but you may NOT have the definition readily at hand if you are a medical editor of books and journals like me. No problem. All one has to do is quickly thumb through the easy-to-read "C's", and voila!! Page 146: CSOP: coronary sinus occlusion pressure.

This book lives on my desk and is simply indispensable. The eponym section, again done alphabetically, is a godsend. Case in point: What is the difference between Frank's operation and Franke's operation? Does it matter? Totally. Is Frenkel's syndrome spelled with an apostrophe or not? Again, this book has the answer.

Such trivia may seem inconsequential, but for those for whom medical terminology is a livelihood, it is far from trivial. It is essential. As is this book, a true tour de force in the medical genre.

1-0 out of 5 stars Medical Dictionary - Nolte-Schlegel and Gonzalez Soler
Some translations are wrong.Slightly more complex terms are not available. Definitely NOT worth the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth buying
It lacks definitions for basic medical terms such as stroke for instance, and the Portuguese translations are very poor. Not worth purchasing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very basic
This really boils down to just a basic dictionary. Missing are the highly technical terms you'd find in Dorland's or Stedman's. Fine for lower level work, but for me, as a medical translator, it nearly always fails to produce. Nevertheless, the terms see accurate enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best for the serious user
I bought this for a young US medical student who has a Brazilian husband and plans to work in Brazil. Someone else gave her Stedman's expensive one, which she loves--and she doesn't even look at this one. When I gave her the Nolte-Schlegel dictionary, I told her that it was for reading rather than reference, because I had read that its coverage was hit-or-miss, and having just seen both books and the recipient using just the one, while I looked in Nolte-Schlegel, I agree. This one looks as if it may still be useful to introduce someone to medical vocabulary, and of course it includes Spanish.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic Dictionary
I expected more from this dictionary.I looked up the word lice, louse, and pediculosis in the English section and there were no entries for these words.Could it be that these terms were not in the dictionary? It turns out that when I looked up piojo (Esp) and piolho (Por), I discovered that the listing in English was under head louse.Similarly, pubic louse was ladilla (Esp) and chato (Por), but nowhere was pubic louse and head louse cross-referenced. In Spanish and Portuguese, these two terms are different, but in common parlance in English we call both infestations lice. The casual user of the dictionary would have a difficult time figuring this out.

This dictionary is better than nothing, but this is one time where an online cross reference of medical terms would be much more efficient.Maybe English, Portuguese, and Spanish-speaking medical schools will get together and create a better online dictionary.

If this dictonary were sold as a CD-ROM, an exhaustive search of the dictionary, which would have taken only a few seconds on a computer, would have been able to find the term head louse when a person searched for louse. The dictionary is useful, but you might be disappointed at what you get for your [money]. ... A useful and comprehensive resource. The information is invaluable whether you are a secretary or nurse. The design is perfect that it is laminated and fits nicely in a 3-ring binder. Thanks for such a great product!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Used this in college, and now that I work in a hospital. Its just great. I have several different charts, and I would buy them again--I probably will when they update them. It just snaps into a 3 ring binder, and I dont worry about something getting spilled on it. This saved me ALOT of time when taking notes for a chapter. I just wish it didnt give you an example of the word on the right hand side of the term..but I guess its good so that you know how to pronounce it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
If your in the medical field or just starting out as a CNA, RN, LPN, MA or PCT this quick reference guide is great, especially for those nursing terminology quizzes, not only it has word, but it helps you remember quicker by breaking down the word. I also put this inside my 3-ring binder notebook for quick access. ... Read more
