Product Description
This history of the world's largest and most powerful intelligence service, the KGB, from its origin after the Russian revolution to the present day, analyzes its operations against subjects as diverse as the EEC, Margaret Thatcher, Solidarity and Libya. This study also provides an insight into Gorbachev's relations with the KGB and examines the disintegration of the Soviet bloc. Christopher Andrew has also written "Secret Service". Gordievsky was a KGB colonel who worked for British intelligence as a penetration agent in the KGB from 1974. He escaped to the West in 1985. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate
The main problem with this book is the presentation of the materal. It is a confused and jumbled narrative that lacks clear structure and looses the reader in minutia. It's as if the authors had no plan for organizing the material and are just information-dumping for 700 pages. I don't think one would have to look very hard to find a better-written work on the subject.

Not recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adds to Our Cumulative Knowledge.
I agree with the other reviewers here as this book is not perfect. It was written before the Venona Transcripts or the Mitrokhin Files became known, and, for this reason, is not as complete a work as something like the Sword and the Shield would be. Regardless, it is an extraordinary primary source testament concerning one of the most secretive, nefarious, and befuddling organizations in history. I got the impression that Mr. Andrew wrote this account based on notes he obtained from Mr. Gordievsky. The result is a somewhat lumbering, and often repetitive, narration. A few of the same sentences are repeated at different points in the book which could potentially irritate many a reader. I did like the chapter outline, however, as it was sequenced chronologically which is helpful considering the varying scenarios within the foreign directorate discussed. We're very lucky in the west that men like Gordievsky had the courage to defect because, if they didn't, there would have been little chance of obtaining information about the Soviet Union at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Flawed and incomplete yet still a good read
When this book came out, it was considered to be groundbreaking and astonishing as far as new information about Soviet operations goes. However, it is almost completely irrelevant. If one takes a close look at the book and compares it with "The Mitrokhin Files" (Mitrokhin being another KGB officer who defected several years later), it will be noted that much of the information Gordievsky SHOULD HAVE KNOWN if he really had access to all top Soviet files is missing. This, along with several other contradictory statements, leads us to conclude that the Soviets knew of Gordievsky's activities and so were using him to feed false and/or irrelevant information to the West.

4-0 out of 5 stars Monumental but hardly captivating
This book tries to be both academic and a good read. Many writers stronger than Gordievsky failed when trying to achieve this.

The authors obviously have a wealth of material at their disposal, but somehow structured approach is lacking. Still, if you have time and/or deep interest in the subject, it is a recommended read.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most repeatedly astonishing book i have read
yep - i give it 5 stars too

the most repeatedly astonishing book i have read methinks - the commies managed to penetrate western security totally only for stalin to totally ignore or misinterpret its meaning due to paranoia about the west

Product Description

As a former fighter in the legendary French Foreign Legion, Simon Low thought he had seen it all. Then he was posted to Iraq. Employed as a private military contractor — a "hired gun" — his assignment was to guard the deadly convoy routes out of Baghdad. Once there, Simon quickly realized that no one could be trusted, including the U.S. military. Whether sending him on perilously haphazard missions or, in one terrifying incident, knowingly opening fire on him, the Americans often proved as dangerous as the insurgents. Simon and his staunch "oppo" Dave faced the daily terror of suicide bombers, armed ambushes, and grenade attacks, and also had to keep a close watch on their ill-prepared Iraqi comrades. Incompetence or betrayal from within could be fatal, but a far greater fear was that of capture, with prisoners subjected to torture and slow death, while the threat of a "Baghdad Haircut" (beheading) was ever present. Commissioned to courier a large quantity of cash through bandit country, Simon lost patience with his high-handed paymasters and devised a plan of his own for the money. This is an intimate, action-packed narrative of life as a soldier of fortune in the most controversial conflict of our age. Delivered with grim, earthy humor, the narrator depicts an eyewitness account of Iraq spiraling into bloody chaos, providing a unique and uncompromising insight into the theater of war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boys from Baghdad
This was a good book. I enjoyed it Though I admit there was the usual British attitude.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simon Tells It As It Is...
Far from being mere knuckle-draggers with guns, this book defines the multi-skilled roles required by a professional British contractor in a hostile, foreign environment. It's thoroughly laced with Simon's trademark salty, penetrating sense of humour and brutal honesty which allows the reader to experience the roller-coaster we all rode.

I'm perhaps biased in my review, having been fortunate enough to have worked alongside Simon on both ASP2 in the desert outside Tikrit as well as the PSD-team mentioned. A huge grin cracked my face as I read his description of the contact on the Vortex and the various people involved - exactly as I remembered it from my position in Victor 2.

Nice one, mate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting account of life doing private security in Baghdad.
This book tells the story of a former French Legionnaire who winds up working in the private security sector in Iraq during the war. This book gives the reader a view of one aspect of the Iraq war that is rarely discussed. I recommend this book for anyone who wants more insight into recent times in Iraq. I also recommend this book for people who live anywhere in the West and complain about how hard their job is. They should read this and then think again and count their blessings. This true story could easily be turned into an action movie that most would enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running The Roads of Hell
Simon Low has written an outstanding book on his experiences as a security contarctor in Iraq.Simon goes into his background as a member of the French Foreign Legion and then takes the reader on a hell bent for leather ride through the mean streets of Iraq.He goes into detail about the heros, villains, and the duds.If you are considering security work I would recommend this book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Surreal garbage
Given the enormous barrage of anti-Israeli propaganda in the international media, in the academic community, and in the United Nations, I think decent people everywhere ought to be at least a little bit concerned about a possible genocide in the Levant. While Israel does have quite a bit of military strength, it could be defeated. And if it is defeated, its entire population could be at risk. Moreover, since it will not accomplish anything positive to slaughter large numbers of Israelis, there is a good chance that any aggression that begins with such a massacre will not stop there: non-Israelis will be at great risk as well.

That's not what this article is about.Instead, Edward Herman pretends that the only threat of genocide is from the threatened Israelis. Why Israel would want to commit suicide in such a spectacular manner is not clear. But that does not stop our intrepid author!

Terrorists are indeed threatening Israel, but Herman has no reason to dwell on that.Instead, he simply calls those who defend themselves against such attacks "terrorists!"The Arab aggressors who wish to destroy Israel have concentrated on attacking civilians. That makes sense, since they wish to get rid of the entire Jewish population. The Jews have concentrated on attacking the aggressors.Arab civilian casualties do not help Israel: they do not save Jewish lives. But Herman ignores facts and logic here, saying that Israel intentionally strikes at civilians. Israel may in fact kill civilians when they strike back at attackers, but it is obvious that civilians are not a principle target.

The article then gets really strange. We hear about all sorts of Israeli acts in which Arabs got hurt, as though there were no Arab war against Israel. It is as if there were some evil alien force called Israel which simply existed to hurt Arabs. And it is as if the Arab aggression against Israel never existed!

Israel is a tiny, land-poor nation, but you would never know it from this article, which implies that Israel is some vast and greedy Empire!Herman does not dare mention that Israel, even including the West Bank, the Golan, and Gaza, is less than 11,000 square miles, far less than the five million Jews who live in Israel could simply purchase on the open market were people allowed to bid freely for land in the region.Arabs insist on banning Jews from living in some of their countries, and they insist that the disputed West Bank be ethnically cleansed of Jews, but Herman instead accuses the Jews of racism and ethnic cleansing.Year after year, there are more slanders and attacks against Israel, but Herman says it is the other way around, and that Israel is getting away with all sorts of transgressions against everyone!

Israel looks very much like a little Jewish Bantustan. But Herman won't say this.Instead, he says that Israel's Arab neighbors are the ones in Bantustans!

The Arab media and the European media have been strongly biased against Israel.Even the U.S. media has tended to be biased against Israel. But that is not good enough for Herman, who accuses the U.S. media of being "Orwellian" in its support for Israel.

Herman quotes an Israeli who asks when Sharon will be arrested. And when will the world "stop neglecting the fact that the goal of the Israeli government is not security but the continued occupation and suppression" of the Arabs.Well, it is obvious that whether Israel is good or wicked, its goal is to defend its citizens, not to commit suicide in an attempt to hurt a few innocent Arabs! And I think Herman ought to have admitted not only that Arabs exist, but that quite a few have become combatants in a gratuitous war against Israel.

This article is simply trash.
