Each year, several million American adults suffer injury or property damage due to natural disasters (1). In several large household probability samples we (together with colleagues) have found that approximately one-third of adults report exposure to a natural disaster during their life span (2,3). In addition, recent events confirm the potential impact of various natural disasters (e.g., the Great Midwest floods of '93; the Southern California fires of '93, Hurricanes Andrew '92, Iniki '92, and Hugo '89; the Oakland Hills fire '91, and the Loma Prieta earthquake '89). Our personal and professional backgrounds provide us with insights concerning the mental health impact of natural disasters. On a personal level, we both lived in Charleston, South Carolina in September, 1989 when Hurricane Hugo devastated the area. We understand first hand what it is like to prepare for, survive, and clean up following a major natural disaster. On a professional level, we are part of a clinical research team that specializes in studying the mental health impact of various natural disasters. We have received National Institute of Mental Health funding to study the following events: Hurricane Hugo (September, 1989), the Loma Prieta earthquake (October, 1989), the Sierra Madre earthquake (June, 1991), and Hurricane Andrew (August, 1992). Our comments reflect a synthesis of out personal insights and research findings.

Your website should focus on providing the links to sites which will give the best help in such matters as: Describing and defining the disaster. Where does it occur? When does it occur? What damage is caused? How is it caused? What can we do to minimise its impact on humans? Can you find records of historical events regarding the incidence of this disaster?

Extractions: Ecosystem Dynamics and Prophylaxy of Natural Foci Diseases General description Full Title: Estimating Ecosystem Dynamics as a Basis for Elaborating of Actions on Preventive Measures for Natural Foci Diseases (Plague, Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome etc.) Tech Area / Field: BIO-ECO: Biotechnology and Life Sciences / Ecology Project Summary The goal of the project: in accordance with the principles of the sustainable development and the rational use of the natural resources to develop a system of monitoring and regulation of the human impact on the natural foci of plague and hemoerrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HVF) considering specifics of the local ecosystem dynamics under human impacts, and to suggest recommendations for the non-specific prophylaxis in reclamation zones inclusive of the population and ecological patterns of the small mammals host species and their response to the environmental change. Our previous findings indicated a strong need for the constant monitoring of the natural disease foci under the dynamic environmental change. Vital need for the further development and extending of the monitoring stems from the non-equilibrium state of the natural ecosystems under unstable human impact, which makes it difficult to predict the status of the natural foci of infections. In this project the major efforts should be aimed at working out the program of the rational land-use and regulation of agricultural and man-made impacts in the first place. Together with the commonly recognized principles of the sustainable development new approach to the resource exploitation within territories of the natural foci of infections must take into account specifics of the host species population response to the environmental change.
Extractions: The ICBS (International Committee of the Blue Shield) was created in 1996 by the following non-governmental organisations, ICA (International Council on Archives), ICOM (International Council of Museums), ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites), IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) to collect and disseminate information and to co-ordinate action in emergency situations, its missions being to protect and safeguard cultural heritage according to The Hague Convention of 1954 for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. ICBS has participated to various conferences for the revision of The Hague Convention (Paris, Vienne, The Hague) and has organised a meeting on the situation of Afghan cultural heritage. The Radenci Seminar was the first attempt of ICBS to join efforts for the establishment of a common strategy. The seminar organised jointly by ICBS, IIAS (International Institute of Archival Sciences in Maribor, Slovenia) and the Regional Archives of Maribor, with the support of UNESCO, gathered thirty-one participants from ten countries (Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Hungary, The Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia and Sweden) and took place in Radenci, Slovenia, November 12-16, 1998.
