Extractions: Blueberries on WWW ... The Herbarium Sheet Cynthia Armstrong, Artist When Cynthia Armstrong had to do an internship to complete her graduate program in scientific illustration, she contacted Sondra Lebost and Brian Boom about working at NYBG. Coincidentally, Dennis Stevenson was looking for someone to prepare illustrations of cycads for the Flora of Colombia and Flora Neotropica; a match was made and Cynthia was on her way east from her home in northern California for a two-month stint in the Harding Lab. With the internship, Cynthia completed the certificate program at UC Santa Cruz, one of the few graduate programs in scientific illustration in the US. As those of us who have had the pleasure of knowing her have already recognized, Cynthia has a strong background in biology - she has been able to set us straight on a number of fine points regarding insects, cephalopods, and other critters. In fact, she was enrolled in a Ph.D. program in marine biology at Santa Cruz, studying communities in Alaska that live on 4000' vertical walls (half underwater, half above), when she had her epiphany. She started drawing some of the species, and when her colleagues asked if they could use her drawings in publications, she realized she had found her true calling.

Extractions: Washington DC: Congressional Research Service Library of Congress October 7, 1993 Summary This report lists 234 instances in which the United States has used its armed forces abroad in situations of conflict or potential conflict or for other than normal peacetime purposes. It brings up to date a 1989 list that was compiled in part from various older lists and is intended primarily to provide a rough sketch survey of past U.S. military ventures abroad. A detailed description and analysis are not undertaken here. The instances differ greatly in number of forces, purpose, extent of hostilities, and legal authorization. Five of the instances are declared wars: the War of 1812, the Mexican War of 1846, the Spanish American War of 1898, World War I declared in 1917, and World War II declared in 1941.
