Extractions: Phone: (702)386-ARTS Chamber music is an integral part of musical study and performance. It is in small ensembles that students grow and mature musically. Students interested in performing in small ensembles are placed in quintets, quartets, trios, duos or other small chamber groups. Intermediate and advanced level students are coached by members of the faculty. Following World War II, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki developed the theory that all children can be educated by the mother tongue method of learning. Children learn their native language with ease at a tender young age. Why not apply this procedure to learning a musical instrument? Dr. Masaaki Honda, in propounding this theory said, "If they can speak and understand such difficult things as language, they surely must have the abilities for performing high arts if these are also developed at a tender age." "The general concept of the word 'talent' was that of a particular faculty with which one is naturally endowed. Talent education is based on the assumption that humans are born with a very high potential for development. Talent education applies to more than knowledge of technical skill but also morality, building of character, and appreciating beauty. We know that these are human attributes acquired by education and environment. Thus our [Suzuki] movement is not concerned with raising so-called prodigies, nor does it intend to emphasize just early development. We must express it as a total human education."

Extractions: Nevada Library Association Intellectual Freedom Handbook, 1999 June 1998 In response to numerous questions on the specifics of filtering issues, the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee has developed the following questions-and-answers document to provide guidance to librarians on these and related matters. This document is by no means comprehensive, and the Committee anticipates adding to it on a regular basis. Internet Questions Is filtering okay in the children's room? Is it okay to filter in the children's room if children are permitted access to unfiltered computers outside of the children's room? This is the most frequently asked question public libraries are facing in 1998. It appears that those public libraries that are doing five things simultaneously are meeting the most success in providing Internet access to children in children's rooms. They are 1) developing a broad Internet use policy that is part of rather than separate from overall library use policies; 2) educating the entire public regarding the Internet policy and regarding use of the Internet itself; 3) providing unfiltered Internet access in the children's room; 4) strongly encouraging parents to guide their children's use of the Internet in libraries; and 5) providing professional advice in the area of Web site selection to obtain information.

CORE: California Opportunities for Reference Excellence is a statewide correspondence training program developed for the public libraries in California. The San Joaquin Valley Library System headquartered in Fresno, California manages the project on behalf of the California State Library. They will, upon receipt of a supervisor's request on library letterhead, issue a password that permitts access to the answer key. Even if the correspondence aspect of this program is not used, the written materials are very beneficial. The San Joaquin Valley Library System has had a Reference Correspondence Course since its beginning in 1960. The CORE course is based on that work. In 1990, the state of Minnesota adapted the CORE materials for use in Minnesota, as the MORE project. As part of that effort, a committee revised and updated the CORE materials. This current edition of the CORE REFERENCE CORRESPONDENCE COURSE incorporates many of those changes and updates.
