About Us In 2000, people in the United States generated 231.9 million tons of solid waste or 4.5 pounds per person per day. Although the amount of solid waste generated each year has been increasing since 1960, the rate of growth recently has slowed, a result of source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting. In 2000, 30.1% of the waste generated was recycled or composted. EPA's national solid waste goal is to recycle 35% of the waste stream by the year The mission of the EPA New England's solid waste reduction team is to reduce the amount of solid waste being disposed through the promotion of source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting activities as well as assisting in the new frontiers of recycling such as electronics (computers, monitors, TVs) and food waste. Some of these tasks are accomplished through funding grants and dissemination of information to many organizations and agencies who help make our goal a reality.
