Extractions: NSFA (National Fire Sprinkler Association, Inc.) Bulletin New Jersey Senate Approves Dormitory Sprinkler Legislation Wednesday, March 29, 2000, Patterson, New York - This morning's Star-Ledger, a New Jersey daily newspaper, reports the New Jersey State Senate has unanimously approved legislation that will require fire sprinklers to be installed in every building used as a dormitory in a public or private institution of higher education in the State. This bill, which was prompted by the fire in a Seton Hall University dormitory on January 19th that claimed the lives of three students and injured scores of others, provides $90 million in matching funds in the form of low interest loans to finance fire sprinkler system installations. The loans would be made from the state's Higher Education Capital Improvement Fund. To be eligible for funds under the provisions of the law, private colleges and schools will be required to fund one half of the total cost and public institutions would have to supply one third of the total cost of compliance. A companion bill that was also passed makes it mandatory for colleges and boarding schools to submit installation plans to the state within six months after the bill is signed with work to be complete within two years.

Extractions: Friday, March 14, 2003 In January 1996, the New Jersey Legislature adopted a law establishing public charter schools. Charter founders were hopeful that these new schools would provide a new approach to urban education and that they could do better than the existing traditional model of education. But, after six years, have charter schools made a difference? How do they stack up against the traditional public schools? How many have gone out of business or been shut down for poor performance? A special Community Town Hall forum sponsored by Mercer County Community College and The Times of Trenton will attempt to answer your questions. Join our panel of experts and champions of both traditional and charter schools. Listen to their assessments, hear their responses to the moderator's questions and put your questions to them.

Extractions: November 12, 2001 8:35 a.m. mericans don't care about crime anymore. Even after the September 11 attacks muted and refocused campaigns in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York City, ordinary crime never emerged as a major issue. While all major party candidates mouthed the same reassuring platitudes about terrorism, law enforcement, a defining left-right wedge issue in nearly every important election from 1960 to 1996, became little more than a cipher. While the last decades' 40-percent across-the-board drop in reported crime shows that the trio of better policing, more prisons, and tough penalties has worked to reduce lawlessness, the United States still has a major criminal-justice problem. Low-income neighborhoods, particularly those with large minority populations, remain far too dangerous. While putting thugs behind bars has made the country safer, public policy verges on negligence when it comes to reintegrating convicts But these ideas don't get mentioned more because the mainstream Left has, in effect, become prisoner to the

Extractions: Special to the Star-Ledger Early every weekday morning, the parking lots at Raritan Center, the largest warehouse and distribution complex east of the Mississippi River, teem with activity. Cars and sports utility vehicles, 18-wheelers and delivery vans all crowd the asphalt. Not far away, employees at the Ford Motor Co. and Mobile Oil plants, the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Middlesex County College and hundreds of other locations throughout Edison repeat a similar ritual. A reverse commuter town, Edison's daytime population during the week is more than 250,000, a conservative estimate, according to George Spadoro, Edison's mayor. "Edison is a major business center drawing labor from all over central New Jersey. Some estimates put the number of people who commute here to work at more than 300,000. Edison is a very vibrant, dynamic place to live and work," Spadoro says. With a population of approximately 100,000, Edison is the sixth largest municipality in New Jersey. It is by no means simply an industrial town. There are tree-lined streets typical of the more densely populated suburban communities, strip malls, multiplexes, 38 parks and a king-size shopping mecca, Menlo Park Mall.
