Support from Verizon made this project possible. Project Director Jacalyn Willis commented, "This is very exciting, and a first for New Jersey educational institutions: to actually develop our own video conference with classes from home, and live from a research site in an exotic location. It gives totally new meaning to the Rainforest Connection as an interactive teaching venue." If this pilot project succeeds, then similar programming from Montclair State University and from field sites will be made available to more schools partnered with PRISM, she said.

A representative random sample of middle and high schools was selected from a pool of 870 schools, yielding 430 schools in 294 districts. Data were collected from superintendents, principals, lead health teachers, and HIV/AIDS teachers. Results showed that the vast majority of districts complied with mandates regarding placement, sequence, and age-appropriate instruction. Forty percent of schools used skills-based instruction. Teacher training was related to instructional practice (e.g., more comprehensive instruction; broader coverage; and initiation of skills-based methods). Multiple policy, staff development, and curriculum recommendations for program improvement were generated. Findings, conclusions, and recommendations for program improvement were written in summary reports and submitted to NJDOE. Select findings are further discussed in a research article under review for publication.

Extractions: K-12 Staff Development: District Professional Development Teams HERE for a description of the "Corn Associates Procedure for Pre-K to 8 Curriculum Alignment with the Core Standards". Leadership Training for Principals: Looking at Core Standards and Performance Assessment Through a New Lens It is our belief that in order for teachers to teach in a way that is compatible with New Jersey's core content curriculum standards and statewide assessments, they need to understand and employ a performance-based approach. For most teachers, however, this approach requires a significant change in both behavior and the way the curriculum is organized. Because change is a highly personal process for teachers (as well as for administrators), this is also intended to help principals examine their beliefs about leadership styles as it affects decision-making, builds relationships, and facilitates change in schools. This is a workshop about strategies that facilitate change within the instructional process. We take a close look at the leadership characteristics needed before productive change can occur. Also, we examine performance assessment and brain compatible strategies within a standards-driven, K-8 school context. A plan for curriculum alignment to standards is presented, along with sample performance tasks.
