It is up-dated from the article in the Winter 1998-99 Acupuncture Alliance newsletter, "The Forum." For more information regarding this organization, visit their website at www.acupuncturealliance.org. On July 10th the governor of Missouri signed the new law in Missouri, making it the 35th jurisdiction (34 states plus DC) to pass a statute regulating acupuncture and Oriental medicine. Due to local political philosophies and needs, the laws vary considerably from state to state. This creates a number of myths about what is happening across the US. This article looks at the facts, the myths and possible future legislative directions. Independent Board or ...? There is a myth that most states have an independent board of acupuncture or Oriental medicine. In fact, only eleven states have independent boards. In twelve others, acupuncturists are under the board of medical examiners. In the last third, acupuncturists are regulated by the Department of Commerce, Regulatory Agencies, Health, Professional Regulation or Occupational Licensing or by a board such as the Board of Regents or Board of Chiropractic. Most of the states that have not passed laws have very few practitioners. Since states usually require regulatory boards to be financially self-supporting, and boards cost $25,000 and up to operate each year, it is unlikely that new statutes will create an independent board unless a substantial number of practitioners move into the area and provide the funding for it. However, as the number and political power of practitioners increase, states may change their statute to an independent board as Maryland and California have done.

State Laws And Regulations are scrambling to reform their education system, the gain a perspective on homeschooling, laws, and regulations. http://www.home-ed-magazine.com/HSRSC/hsrsc_lws.rgs.html
Extractions: BEFORE GOING FURTHER The HEM staff has been considering pulling these listings. The main reason is that as homeschooling becomes more widely accepted, and as states are scrambling to reform their education system, the situation becomes more complex. This makes overviews, listings and rankings less valid. We have, however, decided to keep these listings in place because they carry, at a minimum, a link to your state government. Additionally we hope reading cited code and at least one homeschooler's interpretation will help start to demystify legislation and encourage you to investigate further. When talking to new homeschoolers we often hear concerns about the law. Is homeschooling legal? Who do I have to notify? What do I have to teach? While the legalities are a concern that should not be ignored, neither should our response be automatic and not thought out carefully. There is no single source, no one true homeschooling authority. We all own the responsibility to think through laws and regulations on homeschooling. Of course you'll find those who disagree - an entire industry has grown up around the fact that there are differences of opinion on homeschooling's legal matters. What we offer here are overviews of laws and regulations compiled by knowledgeable homeschoolers. These files are not legal advice nor the final word on the subject. They are simply a starting point. To maintain our freedom to homeschool we will each need to go far beyond any convenient compilation or synopsis. We need to continue to do our own learning, lead our own research, and decide on our own actions.

Extractions: January, 2001 INTRODUCTION: The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with the thoughts of other men. - James Beattie VISION The vision of the New Mexico School Libraries Task Force is that every student in New Mexico schools (K-12) will (1) be supported by quality library services, collections, and programs, and (2) will be able to use information, materials, and media effectively for his/her own learning needs. PURPOSE The purpose of this document is to outline standards for New Mexico school library media programs which have been developed by the New Mexico Task Force for School Libraries over the last year, 1999-2000. Because these standards include quantitative measures, they are offered to provide useful, concrete guidelines for schools and school districts whose aim is to improve the quality of their school library media programs.

Top Ten List State By State Resources Alabama We invite you to share this free resource with your friends, local and state support groups, and libraries. This guide is available in bulk and single copies, now in both print and electronic editions (pdf). Used by hundreds of libraries and support groups across the US and Canada, the Homeschooling Information and Resource Guide contains essays and articles, such as the following excerpt by favorite Home Education Magazine columnist, Earl Gary Stevens: "When they call me, parents first want to know if it is legally possible to immediately remove their children from school. They are not interested in arguing with authorities over the constitutionality of state equivalent education regulations; they are interested in extricating their children with the least amount of conflict and trauma. They are glad to learn that in Maine local school officials have no authority in the matter and that it takes only a few minutes a year to jump through the state's paperwork hoop. Then they are free to pursue their own version of the good life. Many parents wonder if they are capable. I tell them that they will soon be wondering how they could have thought otherwise."
