Norfolk Island And The Pacific Cable geography On the map norfolk island appears to be an ideal site. It is1,700km from Sydney and 1060km from Auckland and on approximately http://www.pacific-cable.org/nf/norfolk.html
Extractions: One of the first times Norfolk Island is mentioned as a possible cable station for an all-British Pacific Cable was in 1893. At that time Sir Sandford Fleming, Chief Engineer of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, travelled to Australia with the Canadian Minister of Trade and Commerce to try and obtain support for the project from the Australian State Governments which were not federated until January, 1901. The laying of a French cable from New Caledonia to Bundaberg had produced calls for a British cable from the southern press so in a document circulated to the State Governments Fleming suggested a number of possible routes. The first was from Vancouver to Fanning Island, Fiji and then directly to New Zealand or Norfolk Island. From Norfolk Island the cable would be split with one arm to New Zealand and the other to Queensland. Geography:
