Fieldwork Birchtown, Nova Scotia is important in the cultural history of all descendants of the Black Loyalists, African American and African Canadian Peoples. While the Black Loyalist Experience is commemorated by the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, the place itself does not have federal designation. Part of the reason has been that a definition of the place, with boundaries, centres and the network of community function that the Black Loyalist settlers began to establish in 1783, was unknown. In an effort to rediscover this place, its people and their history, archaeological investigations have been carried out since 1993. The Black Loyalist Heritage Society has been largely responsible for this work and has taken on a primary role in the research and documentation of Birchtown's settlers and their descendants. This website is designed as a gateway to the archaeology of this Black Loyalist community, the remains of the homes and objects left behind at Birchtown and the stories they have to tell us about what the lives of the Black Loyalists were like. For background historical information on the Black Loyalists, please visit the sites listed on our links page. This website has been created by the Black Loyalist Heritage Society. Both the North Pacific Coast of North America and Sichuan Province are characterized by extreme environmental diversity in a rather small geographic space. In Washington, this is primarily due to rainfall differences on an east-west gradient, and secondarily to altitude differences. Similarly, Sichuan has extreme environmental differences, but these are primarily due not to rainfall differences (which are rather small) but to the direct and indirect affects of altitude variation and extreme relief. The problem for the American half of the bi-national student team starting fall 2000 is to analyze an assemblage of animal bones found in an archaeological site on Kodiak Island, Alaska, that spans almost 2500 years. The impact of humans on their resource base from 6500 to 4000 years ago is visible in the remains of the meals they left behind. The students will be sorting and counting the various types of animal bones found, primarily from sea mammals, birds, and both marine and salmonid fish. Changes in the proportions of these taxa in the diet and in the age structure of the animal populations being harvested, when compared to the paleoclimatic record for the region, will indicate the extent to which humans impacted the animals they used for subsistence.

Extractions: [Enlarge] In 1960 Helge Ingstad and his wife Anne Stine Ingstad were searching for archeological evidence of Vikings in Labrador and Newfoundland. In the small village of L'Anse aux Meadows on the northern tip of Newfoundland they met a fisherman named George Decker who showed them sod foundations that had the shape of Viking longhouses. More than a decade of archeological investigation at this site has proved conclusively that Vikings had built a settlement in North America 500 years before Columbus, just as the sagas say. The evidence at the site also suggests that more southerly voyages might have taken place, and that other settlements might be found. Archeologists believe L'Anse aux Meadows was a base camp which afforded a way-station to further explorations of North America. [View 3D] [Get plugin] Excavations revealed a number of artifacts that are diagnostic of a Viking site. From 1961 until 1968, the Ingstad excavations uncovered Viking artifacts including a ringed pin, a soapstone spindle whorl, a bone pin, a whetstone, iron boat rivets, worked wood and other objects. There was evidence of iron-smelting and forging, and hearth charcoal is dated to A.D. 1000. The style and construction of the three longhouses and outbuildings are identical to 11th century Iceland and Greenland. The artifacts indicated weaving and iron-working, activities which were not practiced by Native Americans until after A.D. 1500. These finds confirm L'Anse aux Meadows as the earliest European settlement yet known in North America.

When Columbus encountered natives using the Atlatl during his voyages to the New WorldEuropeans who had long forgotten the weaponsoon became familiar with it again. These encounters were most certainly with the business end of the weapon, the European wondering, "what was that?", just before dying. The Aztecs preferred the Atlatl as a weapon of war. We get the word "Atlatl" (pronounced at-la-tal) from their language. In fact, the Atlatl and Dart were the only weapon Cortez and his Conquistadors feared because it easily piercing Spanish armor, often sending the hapless soldier to meet his Maker. If Montezuma had not mistaken Cortez for the Feathered Serpent God Quantzaquatle, history may have been very different, with the 200 or so Spanish conquistadors being only a footnote in the history of that Nation, foolish invaders who were overwhelmed by superior firepower. The Atlatl and Dart have enjoyed widespread use throughout the world. At one time or another people everywhere have used it as their main weapon for food, procurement, and war. Even today it is used by the natives of Australia, Papua New Guinea, and some tribes in South America and Northwest Mexico. But it was in North Americamore specifically in what is now the continental United Statesthat the weapon was developed to its fullest potential. Typically for our species, Native Americans tinkered and toyed with this weapon system, developing and improving the technology to such a high level of sophistication that it is impressive even by today's standards. Just as firearms have developed from muzzle-loaders to breach loaders to lever actions and automatics the Atlatl has undergone a similar evolution.

Extractions: ARCHEOLOGY Lower Pecos River region rock art is considered by experts to be world class, and comparable in significance to sites in Europe, Australia, and America's Baja California. With 250-plus known sites within a 100-square- mile area, the region has one of the densest concentrations of Archaic rock art in the new world, and among the largest multicolored images in North America. While you are at Amistad National Recreation Area, you can see some of this famous rock art with a visit to Panther Cave, accessible by boat. Parida Cave, on the Rio Grande, is also accessible by boat if water levels are permitting. When lake levels are low, Parida cave is sometimes accessible by foot via an unmaintained extremely primitive 3-mile trail. Check with park rangers before embarking on this potentially dangerous hike. Visitors who don't have boats can see spectacular rock art on guided tours at nearby Seminole Canyon State Historical Park , or at the White Shaman - Galloway Preserve just west of Seminole Canyon on Hwy. 90.
