Extractions: Geography and Natural Resouce Profile Another interesting geologic formation is known as the Williston Basin, which contains oil and natural gas. Standing Rock Reservation falls well within this basin. Climate and Temperatures Standing Rock Reservation falls within the location of the geographic center of North America, and is typical continental climate. This means the climate is characterized by large annual, daily, and day-to-day temperature changes, and light to moderate precipitation which tends to be irregular in time and coverage; or extremely cold in the winters and hot and humid in the summer. Cold and dry air masses originating in the Polar Regions, warm and moist air masses from tropical regions, or mild, dry air from the Northern Pacific prevents any current weather regime from being anything but monotonous. If you dont like the weather, wait a couple of hours, so to speak. Normal average annual temperatures in North Dakota ranges from 37 degrees Fahrenheit in the Northeast to 43 degrees Fahrenheit on the Southern boundary. January is the coldest month with average temperatures ranging from 2 degrees F in the northeast to 17 degrees F in the southwest. July is the warmest month with temperatures averaging 67 degrees F in the northeast to 73 degrees F in parts of the south. The range of normal average monthly temperatures between the coldest and warmest months is 54 degrees F in the southwest and 65 degrees F in the northeast. These large annual ranges attest to the continental nature of the temperatures around Standing Rock. (Taken from the Northern Prairie Research Center)
