His publications and specific areas of interest included the repercussions of U.S. nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands, social and religious commentary on the geographic area of Micronesia and specifically on the Island of Rota. Primary sources material is also included in support of his publications; I Speak the Beginning: Anthology of Surviving Poetry of the Northern Mariana Islands, and A Tidy Universe of Islands. . Extractions: L earning about the ancient Chamorro and Carolinian culture has been of great interest to archeologists and to the people who live in the Marianas today. Much of what has been learned about Chamorro culture and traditions is from artifacts, legends and stories passed down from generation to generation and from drawings and journals of European missionaries written a thousand years ago. The earth and its fruits provided nourishment, shelter and medicine. Ancient Chamorros formed clans which followed matrilineal lines of descent. Common marriage was accepted and monogamy practiced until one of the parties decided to leave, which was also acceptable. As in many other early cultures, the role of women was to care for the family, weave baskets (kasse) and gather food. Men's roles included fishing, building homes, gardening, stonework and canoe-building. Homes were constructed of material found in the forest and erected atop huge latte stones. Latte stones are vertical pillars several feet high which support the rest of the house. Latte stones, made of limestone or volcanic rock, can still be seen today on the islands. They are still somewhat a mystery. Rota has a beautiful display of latte stones. Today, several business establishments have used the latte stone shape to add character to local architecture.
