History - Federated States Of Micronesia history he FSM has a rich history dating back several thousand Japanese navy tookmilitary possession of the Marshall, Caroline and northern mariana islands. http://www.visit-fsm.org/visitors/history.html
Extractions: he FSM has a rich history dating back several thousand years. The islands were originally settled by ancient people sailing east from Asia and north from Polynesia . Later discovers and settlers included the Spanish, Germans, and Japanese and evidence of their former presence is found throughout the islands. Following the trusteeship under U.S. administration after W.W. II, the FSM is now independent and self-governing. Most linguistic and archaeological evidence indicates that the islands were first discovered and settled between two and three thousand years ago . The first settlers are often described as Austronesian speakers possessing horticultural skills and highly sophisticated maritime knowledge . These first settlers are thought to have migrated eastward from Southeast Asia to Yap. From there, some migrated south to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and New Caledonia, and later to Kiribati and the Marshall Islands. The oral histories of the Micronesian people indicate close affiliations and interactions in the past among the members of the island societies comprising the present-day FSM. The Lelu ruins in Kosrae (1400 AD) and the Nan Madol ruins of Pohnpei (1000 AD) are impressive reminders of the accomplishments of these early peoples.

This early group of Chamorros are responsible for the 'latte stones' found throughout the Marianas. Reaching as high as 20ft (6m), these limestone posts are capped with a piece of limestone or brain coral in the shape of a large bowl. Ferdinand Magellan named the islands the Islas de los Ladrones (Islands of Thieves) in 1521; they were renamed Las Marianas upon the arrival of Spanish priest Luis Diego Sanvitores, in honor of the Spanish queen Maria Ana of Austria. In 1668, Sanvitores and five other Jesuits established the first mission in the Marianas, touching off two decades of hostilities between the priests and less-than-welcoming Chamorros. Spanish troops managed to quell the uprising in the late 1680s. In the hopes of more effectively converting the Chamorros, the Spanish relocated most of them to Guam. Most of the natives on Rota, however, managed to hide out in the hills and avoid capture, and today the Chamorros on Rota are the least mixed in the Marianas. Around 1820, the Spanish allowed islanders from the western Carolines to move to the larger Mariana Islands. The Carolinians managed Spanish cattle herds and maintained a presence in the Marianas at a time when Spain was concerned over German intentions in the area.

Extractions: NN/LM PSRML Home NN/LM NTCC ... Additional Resources The areas fall into two categories politicallyflag territories and independent countries associated with the US through compacts of free association. American Samoa, CNMI and Guam are all flag territories, which makes them officially part of the United States. Their citizens are also US citizens. FSM, RMI and Palau are all independent countries with compacts of free association with the US. This means that the US provides development assistance and defense, and that citizens can move freely across US borders. Communication both within the area and between the area and the PSRML office can be challenging because it ranges over sixteen time zones. Be careful: even the date may differ as the international date line runs through the region. Further complicating matters, although California (like the vast majority of the United States) observes daylight saving time, none of the six island jurisdictions does. A listing of detailed current times and the exact location of the date line is available from Worldtimezone.com
