Extractions: The vast Northwest Territories covered almost the whole of Northern Canada. On April 1 st , 1999, it was divided to create a new territory called Nunavut. The name means " Our land" in Inuktitut the language of the Inuit people. The Inuit form 85 percent of the population of 27,219 in the new Territory of Nunavut. There are 58 different groups of Inuit peoples who have some culture, history and beliefs the same. They live in 28 communities in Nunavut, which includes Baffin Island or Qikigtaaluk, the Keewatin District or Kivalliq, and Hudsons Bay and its islands. Nunavut is an area of 1,994,000 square kilometers. It is one fifth of Canadas land mass . It also has the North Pole and the Magnetic North Pole as part of its territory. The capital, Iqaluit (population 4500) was once called Frobisher Bay. It is the home of the 19 member legislature and territorial government. The court system is unusual in Canada because it often uses traditional Inuit forms of punishment instead of jail sentences Unlike the provinces in southern Canada, Nunavut doesnt have a lot of roads. Irniq, 53, is an Inuit cultural teacher and has lived most of his life in the Kivalliq Region, including Naujaat (Repulse Bay), Salliq (Coral Harbour), Qamanit'tuaq (Baker Lake), Igluligaarjuk (Chesterfield Inlet), Kangiqiniq (Rankin Inlet) and Iqaluit. He has also lived in the Western Arctic, Manitoba and Ontario. Mr. Irniq was the Executive Assistant to the Assistant Commissioner of the N.W.T. in 1974-75. He was elected to the Territorial Council in 1975 and represented the riding of the Keewatin Region for four years. He was the first Inuk to be made Assistant Regional Director for the Department of the Executive in the Keewatin Region, 1979-81. As Superintendent of Renewable Resources, the first Inuk to hold this position, he encouraged the hiring of Inuit into the department. In 1982, he was appointed the first Speaker of the Keewatin Council, a position he held until 1983. Elected President, Keewatin Inuit Association, Mr. Irniq served in this capacity for five years. He was elected in 1987 for the riding of Aivilik, N.W.T. on a platform of encouraging Inuit to participate at higher levels in employment, education and business. A re-election bid in 1991 failed and in 1992 he was made Executive Director, Inuit Cultural Institute. In 1993, he became Director, Communications for Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.
